Mushroomhead Ranked

Got to see Mushroomhead live for the first time at the Static-X - Rise of the Machines Tour. One helluva show by all bands present. Really loved Mushroomhead’s energy and setlist. Go out and see this tour. A ranking of Mushroomhead’s (major label) albums follows.

Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children

Sorry - one album has to fall at the end. Most consider this to be a low point...but I do not fully agree. Though not as good, BSfUC seemed to be a natural progression from Savior Sorrow – and I appreciated the progression. Also, the interplay of Jeffrey Nothing and Waylon Reavis has some great moments on this album.

The Righteous & The Butterfly

This album sees J Mann brought back into the mix, while maintaining the 2-pronged (Nothing, Reavis) vocal attack used in Savior Sorrow and BSfUC. Unfortunately, Waylon Reavis gets truly lost in the mix. Ultimately, this is an attempted return to form (2003 XIII form to be specific), but doesn't fully make it there.

XX

Culls the best tracks from primarily Superbuick and M3 into a stand-alone, kick-ass album. Their most nu-metal offering.
3Mushroomhead
Savior Sorrow

Savior Sorrow puts it into a new gear – losing J Mann’s crushing vocals, but pulling in Waylon Reavis who contributes both strong cleans and harsh vocals. Also, this is a big change from XIII, and I personally prefer forward progression in albums.

XIII

A strong showing - all the way through. It took their established formula up to XX and maximized it. This album contains strong instrumentals (including great synths work) and the best vocal pairings by J Mann and Jeffrey Nothing.

A Wonderful Life

This album is a huge progressive step away from their mold. – with several more experimental, atmospheric tracks and an improved multi-vocalist attack. J Mann continues to bring his deep growl and rapped vocals to the mix, and the new vocalist, Mr. Raukhorst, contributes some great cleans. The real game changer and stand out is Ms. Jackie (Jackie LaPonza of the bands Jackie and Unsaid Fate) – both vocally and stylistically in the videos. Also, really dig the FNM vibes throughout.
