Last week of January and the best of the year so far.
Hands Across the Creek
Some decent tracks, very British, lots of local references.
Will I listen again (WILA): maybe a song here or there.
Keep Me From What I Want
WILA: nope, can do without
Post hardcore/alt rock
Fucked up are expanding there sound again, pushing the boundaries of what's to far for them. Vocals are the only thing left that's hardcore. Lots of pop punk and alt rock song structures.
WILA: there are some solid tracks here so yeah check again.
WILA: album is good, but I'm starting to get a big 2023 playlist, and won't find room for this, a little bit too generic.
Sugar Coated Lies
Political, indigenous Australian hip hop, lyrics are the best thing about this, not really feeling the producing or beats.
Asking For A Ride
Alt rock/ Punk
Anthems that are both fun and catchy. This one has grown on me already. Love the vocals and garage punky sound of the band.
WILA : yes
Indie rock/ psych blues rock
Dan from The Black Keys trying his hardest to replicate Tame Impala's sound.
WILA : Not terrible, but don't need it.
Some dirty fuzzy gritty garage noise punk out of France.
WILA : Fuck yeah this is getting bumped as I type
|9||Loud Fox Cult|
Very good pop punk, this will get some of you excited for sure.
WILA: Yeah when I'm in that mood.
Today My Friend You Drunk the Venom
Some minimal post punk. Musically great, vocals are not my liking.
WILA : Nah
|11||Fankaz/Out in Style|
Fast melodic skate punk out of Italy/Brazil/canada at least. If a split EP makes you want to check out both bands then job done. This is great.
WILA: Yeah, and now going to check their individual stuff.
|12||Ming City Rockers|
Nothing special here, songs are good,but that's it.
WILA : No
Statues of Gold
Sounding like it's straight out of 83, this is some tasty distorted hardcore. Best hardcore release this year so far.
WILA : yup
AOTY so far. Think Jeff Rosenstock crossed with Joyce Manor, a little bit of Weezer and vocals sounding like Robert Smith at times. This is so good, get on it.
WILA: Yeah have spun over 10 times, this is a lot of fun. I'm singing along already. "Dolly Parton give us money"
After The Magic
Post Rock/5th wave emo
Parannoul makes the album he's always wanted, turns out he is a fan of Sigur Ros. A lot to unpack, long songs, if only I knew Korean.
We Cater To Cowards
Noise rock/Sludge thrash
Now this is some filthy Sludge noise thrash. Check it.
|17||Ni Por Favor Ni Ostias|
Ska Punk/ Hardcore
Spanish Ska Punk band, delivering fast fun tunes
Hardcore punk/garage punk
Australian female fronted hardcore punk, most of this is great.
WILA : Yeah
Rites for the Damned
Great music, however vocals let this down.
|20||Complete Mountain Almanac|
Complete Mountain Almanac
Singer Songwriter / Chamber pop
Some nice tracks, and some sleepy ones.
WILA : Not on purpose, but my lady likes it, so probably.
What a mess.
WILA : Fuck off
Post Punk/Art Punk
Some great elements across the album, but it never comes together for me
WILA : No
|23||Guitar Fight from Fooly Cooly|
5th wave emo / Mathy punk
Perfect 4 track EP that's been 2 years in the making. For those that like Origami Angel.
WILA : Yeah
|24||From Parts Unknown|
Skate Punk/Melodic hardcore
Great melodic punk.
|This week has been stacked! |
January complete, 103 albums and EPs checked.
12 EPs added to the yearly playlist
24 albums added to rotation.
The rest can fuck off to the rock I found them under.
Check Total Downer!
|excited to check 14|
|That’s the correct Parannoul rating you got there, good job|
|Thanks Uzu, now check Speed Plans and //LESS for some juicy hardcore, and noisecore. |
|Storm In A Teacup|
|I’m mad at you for revealing the existence of such a shitty album as 21 is.|
|Storm In A Teacup|
|It’s a really bad Rivers Cuomo acid trip.|
|It was so baaaad storm, but some people out there love it.|
|is 21 actually bad or is it just one of those records perfectly poised to get under the skin of the sputnikmusic crusty guitarnerd leafbrain -type B? |
|Try it Johnny, you will see.|
|Oh wait, you actually like Ada Rook, so you might enjoy this.|
|ada rook is sometimes fantastic and sometimes v much not, but she does have a way of filtering the right people for the right reasons|
"AOTY so far. Think Jeff Rosenstock crossed with Joyce Manor, a little bit of Weezer and vocals sounding like Robert Smith at times"
also this sounds godawful but will peep
|and yeah i don't get it - don't love the main vocalist, but both of you have rep'd pop punk/scenecore albums far more cringe than this. at least the gimmick here is cute and self-aware|
|I can fuck with experimental emo/pop punk, but this ain't it. |
|Checking a few of these today |
|Start with 14, it's good fun. |
|Yep, 14 was good vibes. Three is more interesting than their last couple but I never quite connect with them. 11 is interesting so far and 15 was very much not my thing|
|Actually stop listening to these and check the new EP by Guitar Fight From Fooly Cooly|
|Sam these lists are going to give me an endless list of albums to review, big thanks|
|Hope you like some of them YoYo.|
Let me know what you think of the new Overgrow song.
