porcupinetheater 01.13.23	Idk, if singer-songwriter is a distillation of a codified sign (largely in the vein of post-folk boom acoustic troubadourism) then I think it does work as a genre, but as a methodology you could apply the tag to bedroom black metal. Which nobody does, but then Iâ€™m not really sure someone like Lana del Rey or the Bad Seeds (barring the Boatmanâ€™s Call) fits the mold of the genre

porcupinetheater 01.13.23	Most Bad Seeds production absolutely doesnâ€™t defer to lyricism and songcraft and those elements are far from the primary appeal of their 80s work, most of their 90s stuff barring Good Son and Boatmanâ€™s Call, and a lot of the more recent records tends towards vocal ambient, which is kind of antithetical to that approach. Having strong lyricism isnt the be all end all of a genre signifier, and if having vocals present in the mix with discernible lyricism is enough to codify a genre than you have to retroactively subsume something like blues to it as well, which I think isnâ€™t the case

gschwen 01.13.23	IMO singer songwriter is generally attributed to one or two persons and focus on a particular instrument, with songwriting and lyricism being the principal draw. However I couldn't really explain to you why I don't think Jeff Beck or Brian Eno or Bob Marley or Frank Zappa fit, and maybe it's because you could pick better genres for them.

But by "in reality" I meant how the genre typically is and not just how it's defined on paper. It's typical definition is less narrow than the definition of metal sure. But if we take into account all the infinitely growing subcategories of metal it's more narrow in practice. "Lol itâ€™s because he doesnâ€™t like the latter." Eh I like metal I think it's possible to come up with a better definition of singer-songwriter as a genre. That might be hard though as it's easier to define by what it's not than by what it is.
