| PJ HARVEY RANKED
One of, if not the most, important female singer songwriter of her time, PJ Harvey has a long and prestigious career, with a lot of good music under her belt. She's also coming out with new music in a few months! I only ever listened to Let England Shake when it came out, but recently felt compelled to go into her discog and listen to it, which i did over the past 2 months or so. Here's some loose thoughts on all of her official solo albums, don't take it too seriously! | 9 | | PJ Harvey Rid of Me
"Skeletal" is a good description for most of Harvey's music. Her songs have mostly simple structures and follow regular patterns, giving more emphasis to emotion and narrative. This simplicity plays against itself here, tho, with Albini's annoyingly abrassive production making it a real chore to finish.
VEREDICT: Irritating. | 8 | | PJ Harvey Dry
In some ways, this doesn't feel like adebut album. There's so much confidence and a clear vision already present here. But it's also inconsistent and loses potency compared to most of here more mature work. Youth's vigor pushes through, a learning experience.
VEREDICT: Promising. | 7 | | PJ Harvey The Hope Six Demolition Project
PJ's latest is competent. A bit of energy feels missing, like she's repeating herself a bit, but overall it's a solid entry in her catalog.
VEREDICT: Needs a holiday. | 6 | | PJ Harvey Uh Huh Her
I've noticed this is considered her worst, and it IS a bit inconsistent, but damn there's a bunch of amazing songs here, that play so much to her strengths while also remaining distinctly rooted in the distance this albums puts between itself and the rest of Harvey's discog.
VEREDICT: Underrated! | 5 | | PJ Harvey Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
Most likely to be her quintessential album. Can't really remember much of it, but i sure like it when its on!
VEREDICT: Serviceable. | 4 | | PJ Harvey To Bring You My Love
Now we're getting somewhere. While i embrace the inconsistency of some of her earlier work, i truly appreciate when artists start to understand what's so special about their own voice, work on their style and put it in a concise, condensed and straight-forward manner. Solid solid SOLID album.
VEREDICT: SOLID! | 3 | | PJ Harvey Is This Desire?
At the risk of IMMEDIATELY contradicting myself, ITD? might most likely contain my least fav PJ song AND my fave PJ song of all time. A constrast that only serves to solidify my amazement at this album. The strong Trip Hop vibes help, too.
VEREDICT: Fascinating. | 2 | | PJ Harvey White Chalk
After Uh Huh Her, this left turn into a folkier, more baroque sound might have caught some by surprise, but to me felt as natural as anything. She's clearly rooted in the folk artist pathos, and her voice finds a new, more subtle tone here that i geniunely miss. Definitely want more of this side of her!
VEREDICT: Necessary. | 1 | | PJ Harvey Let England Shake
Classic. If you never listened to PJ, at least check this one out!
VEREDICT: Vital. | |

08.26.22 | I feel like I’m here early but already hard disagree lol
| rabidfish
08.26.22 | lemme finish first lol | Gyromania
08.26.22 | Correct ranking | ArsMoriendi
08.26.22 | 4 > 2 > 3 > 8 > 1 > 9 > 5 > 7 > 6 | Demon of the Fall
08.26.22 | hang on why do I love 3, 4 and (somewhat) 5 but have never actually heard 1?
this is poor | rabidfish
08.26.22 | @ars ah i thought you were gonna come out with some hot take, but that's pretty much the consensus.
Disappoint. | Gyromania
08.26.22 | Let England Shake is vastly superior to her other albums honestly. The thought of it sitting behind Dry is so weird to me | Demon of the Fall
08.26.22 | what do you mean ‘behind Dry’ is that some sort of common consensus? | Sinternet
08.26.22 | terrible ranking | rabidfish
08.26.22 | i bet sint likes the crap ones and doesn't like the good ones.
typical | theBoneyKing
08.26.22 | Well, I agree with the top 5. Not in that order though. Only real issue here is the placement of Dry/Rid of Me. | Sinternet
08.26.22 | i like the good ones which is all of them tbh but is this desire is easy number 1 | ArsMoriendi
08.26.22 | They’re all good except Uh Huh Her tbh | ArsMoriendi
08.26.22 | Well Uh Huh Her still has some good stuff on it too
PJ Harvey is amazing | rabidfish
08.26.22 | tbf, 90% of my gripes against RoM is the production. Hate it.
maybe I should listen to the demos, instead. | ArsMoriendi
08.26.22 | Do you tend to not like Albini’s style typically? What’d your take on the production of Surfer Rosa, In Utero, Goat/Liar, and Big Black’s albums if you’ve heard them | rabidfish
08.26.22 | i love In Utero and like big black's catalogue. I just don't like it for PJ's style, specificaly. Takes away from her voice, which should, mostly, stay front and center. | Demon of the Fall
08.26.22 | Yeah I dig some of his stuff, definitely Big Black / TJL, but I agree with that take re Rid of Me. | rabidfish
07.08.23 | so
where does the new one fit in here. gonna have to do a revisit of her whole discog, ig. no 2 ways about it, ig. | JohnnyoftheWell
07.08.23 | Heard bits of 1 but never made it the whole way through, guess I'll peep that before the new one
Rid of Me take is harsh but acceptable, and agree hard that 4/3/2 is a big jump over Cities/Rid of Me (haven't heard 8/7/6 and idk if I care enough about PJ Harvey to go there - your 6 blurb has me interested though) | JohnnyoftheWell
07.08.23 | Is This Desire easy #1 though [2] | rabidfish
07.08.23 | i feel ya. and tbh some days i think fuggit, it's got her best tunes. but there's a couple of things in it i just don't like. small things, but there they are, every time. | ArsMoriendi
07.08.23 | New one is automatically in the top 4 for being part of the To Bring You My Love, Is This Desire?, White Chalk dark gloomy side of PJ | fogza
07.08.23 | I love rid of me, the production on it is incredible | ArsMoriendi
07.08.23 | I like the production on it too, but I suppose I like Flood's production even more |
