06.01.22 | Oh my God, I'm so happy 10 is here. I can't even name the number of times that song intruded on my personal time in my dorm room in college. Just when I thought I would finally get a break, on multiple occasions, some guy would show off his "sensitivity" by playing "Hallelujah" on an acoustic guitar while showing off how high he could sing. I have been permanently traumatized by this (similarly, I can't bring myself to listen to Oasis' "Wonderwall" anymore because of this).
I do love 5, though, and I think 2 is OK (I've never seen what people seem to hate about Coldplay, I think that songs like "Don't Panic" and "Clocks" are solid songs, and while I've never flat out loved their music, I don't see much to truly loathe there). 4, though... now that song is flat out painful. My parents owned that CD back when I was 8 when it first came out, they played that song all the time, and I quickly learned to despise it. Thank god I had The Marshall Mathers LP and Stankonia during that period to comfort me.
I'll say this for 6... musically, it's not half bad, the guitar hook is pretty neat, and Kate Pierson's vocals do break up the song rather well -- I just wish it didn't have the kind of annoying bouncy chorus that sends me running for the hills every time (though I will share this unpopular opinion -- I think I'd rather listen to "Shiny Happy People" than "Stand").
As for what I'd add... off the top of my head, Rush's "La Villa Strangiato." Otherwise great album, but ten minutes of smug drum solo wanking keeps Hemispheres from being quite as terrific as 2112, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures. Oh, what could have been... |
