05.28.22 | Anyone who knows the history of metal and understands what metal is all about would never say such a thing. Metal is all about innovation. Always pushing the genre beyond its limits. No, "elitists" are self-proclaimed. It's in most cases, an egocentric's hyper-inflated sense of superiority of opinion to others and in no way a title that is earned.

No offense to you personally, but to hell with that. What matters is what I hear, not the innovation and complexity that a band brings to the table. The fact that, say, Korn's debut means more to me personally than an armload of Maiden and Priest records has nothing to do with Korn being more "complex" than those two bands, and has everything to do with me liking it far more. It has nothing to do with me being a "moron" or "not knowing the history of metal" (nice generalization there, btw), it just so happens that nu metal connects more with me and that I have long viewed the NWOBHM as an important movement when it came to influencing bands I enjoy strongly (Metallica, Slayer, Alice in Chains, SOAD, Deftones), but that I have little use for outside of this context. Ultimately, all that matters to me is whether or not I like what I hear, not technical innovation, which rarely has any baring on my opinion of a piece of music. |

Maiden, Motorhead, Sabbath, Entombed, Carcass, Obituary, Sepultura, Kyuss, Metallica, Megadeth, Guns n Roses, Judas Priest, Tool, Helmet, Prong, Paradise Lost, Fear Factory, Napalm Death, Ministry, Motley Crue, Def Leppard. I'll have forgotten a load too.
Aerosmith were also a huge band in the early '90s, which was always strange.
Obviously not everyone liked the same bands but those were varyingly 'big' bands at the time at least where I lived. |

zakalwe
05.18.25 | No chance |
Chippe
05.18.25 | Yes chance. The emotional impact from the music were obviously bigger back then and from a metal originality/evolutionary perspective I would give more cred to the classic bands. Nostalgia is mostly lost on me and there are few pre 1990 bands I still listen to. |

DoofDoof
05.18.25 | âFrom your list Doof Iâd say Prong and Kyuss were complete obscurities back then.â
Zak, Kyuss were ubiquitous at my school and then I moved back to London and everyone was into Kyuss too. In a funny way theyâre still a bigger deal than QOTSA
I remember watching the video for Demon Cleaner back in the day. They berthed an entire genre near enough, stoner metal/desert metal with loads of knock offs. Big cult band and then QOTSA were full mainstream. |

05.19.25 | Fair play Doof, I donât recall them at all.
For a bit of background and for you sput lot born too late my personal take on it is as follows.
The school years 91-96 were made up mostly (60-70% probably more) of people into dance, drum n bass, jungle, hardcore. Older brothers and sisters were doing the rave stuff, Helter Skelter and all that. This was without question the dominant âyouthâ scene certainly in Essex, UK.
Second in popularity was indie and goth stuff all handed over from the 80s but then Grunge happened.
Grunge was the alternative option (92-94) to the dance crowd and alongside that you had the metal fans which was off the top of my head the main players being.
Metallica, Maiden, Guns n Roses, Sepultura, Pantera, Faith No More, Slayer, RATM, Megadeth, Alice in Chains, NIN, âlegacyâ bands like Sabbath and Priest and then acts like Life of Agony, The Almighty, Clawfinger, Fishbone, Living Colour.
The underground was Black Metal, Napalm Death and the âgrindâ stuff that John Peel used to broadcast. RIP.
Then 94-96 Oasis came in and were just massive, absolutely fucking massive, everything changed overnight.
Metal also went on a different track it was all Biohazard, Dog Eat Dog, Machinehead, Korn.
Also for the record nobody had any Death.
Then the 00s and the internet happened, the soul was hollowed out and everything went to absolute shite.
