Jk I play Gengar with a stacked moveset if anything I deserve but still dei |

01.16.22 | I go on there and play Gen 1 OU every once in a while. Anything past that is too complex for me lol |

Pangea
01.16.22 | used to play quite a bit a few years ago but not so much anymore
here is my username anyway joren97. still up for a game sometime |
Dedes
01.16.22 | @pika
Xerneas is Uber innit? I've only played OU and UU so I've yet to run into it |
Gyromania
01.16.22 | Occasionally even suffocating! Hyperbole projectile vomit |
nightbringer
01.16.22 | I played the randomised gen 8 ladder for a bit. Did okay despite not knowing some later gen mechanics (terrains caught me by surprise lol). I find competitive pokemon interesting but ultimately I'm not too motivated to actually play it. |
nightbringer
01.16.22 | If I did ever get properly into it, I'd probably go for doubles/vgc rather than singles. |
Gyromania
01.16.22 | I grew up with Pokemon and used to be obsessed but I'm not a fan of where it's gone. Still feel like the first couple-few gens is where it's at |
nightbringer
01.16.22 | What's your beef with later gens, Gyro? |
Pikazilla
01.16.22 | Doubles is the best format. Singles is pretty dumb because 70% of your strat hinges on switching. |
toxin.
01.16.22 | gen 5 ou rain
This reminds me of when I laddered at #38 on Showdown (was it called something else back in 2012) with a rain team pre-BW2. I can't even remember the team that I mostly aped off of Smogon... Politoed, Toxicroak, Ferrothorn, Scizor... that's all I remember. |
Dedes
01.16.22 | That's close to what I have.
Alakazam is my sweeper alongside Hydreigon. Also have Tentacruel for that sweet sweet Rain Dish/Black Sludge healing. |
Gyromania
01.16.22 | nightbringer - they're bad |
Dedes
01.16.22 | @pika
Ive only played Singles lol and tbh
You're almost entirely correct
Definitely think it adds to the unforgiving nature of some metas in a good and bad way tbh |
Pikazilla
01.16.22 | It's part of the mechanics but when I used to play way back when, I had a fair share of battles where most turns were just fucking switching around. In doubles, that shit won't fly that oft, because it's a 4 v 4 and way more predictable, meaning you actually have to put some thought into your team building as opposed to flinging the same two checks at your opponent every time your brain can't churn out a better alternative. |
Dedes
01.16.22 | Tbf in singled often there isn't a better alternative because of those limitations, although for sure it can be boring busting back out Ferrothorn for the nth time in a match |
Cygnatti
01.16.22 | Showdown is goated
Imma OU hater tho |
Dedes
01.16.22 | What do you play Cyg? Uber/UU? |
SteakByrnes
01.16.22 | I haven't played comp since like 2017 but I was a gen 5 and gen 6 comp fiend. Been thinking of getting back into it and watching all the old guys I used to watch but it's so overwhelming lol |
Dedes
01.17.22 | I mean you can still play with gen 5 and 6 comps tbf
Even that's a bit much for me tho, I capped out at gen 4 so my brain is still wrapping around now antiquated concepts like a legendary having multiple forms |
Get Low
01.17.22 | It's dumb that we have to rely on a third party service to play competitive Pokemon since Nintendo just wants to churn out RPGs and other gimmick games for the series. |
Cygnatti
01.17.22 | "What do you play Cyg? Uber/UU?"
I just do randoms matches while I'm @ work lmao not rly competitive anymore. when gen 6 came out I got in like top 250 of OU. that's not super impressive but I was rly proud of that back then lol (people weren't as good). |
GreyShadow
01.17.22 | wish i had time to get back into this shit. played gen 5 and 6 a lot. missed out on 7 and was on the 8 hype train for a few months |
Dedes
01.17.22 | @get low
Tbf I don't think competitive pokemon was ever meant to be their market, although it would be a good idea to make something of it considering their gamer base consists largely of people in the 20-35 bracket now, people who care more about competitive pokemon. |
Get Low
01.17.22 | Pokemon Stadium 3, make it happen, Nintendo! |
Demon of the Fall
01.17.22 | I've still never played a Pokémon game online. It was fun playing link cable battles locally as a kid though.
I feel like the amount of time spent preparing your competitive Pokémon team/teams would be disproportionate to how much time you actually spent battling. I decided a long time ago that the juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze and I'm still of that mindset now.
However I like the idea of what Cyg said, playing randomised battles with zero 'investment' needed. |
nightbringer
01.17.22 | Yeah, that's why I went for randomised when I took at punt at it. |
Pikazilla
01.17.22 | You don't have to take it seriously. Just use whatever pokes you like. A guy won the world champs with a fucking Pachirisu. |
nightbringer
01.17.22 | I mean, true, but that Pachirisu was pretty well thought through in relation to the meta and his wider team. |
Pikazilla
01.17.22 | Yeah, but it's all about experimenting. You don't have to sit down and learn every move/item/ability combo in the world. People come up with new strats to this day. |
Demon of the Fall
01.17.22 | true I guess, you can (apparently) come up with strategies using whatever Pokémon you want and I know you don't have to play higher tiers either (if you're wanting something different).
I was more talking about all the IV/EV/breeding/whatever else rubbish, I have done some research on this in the past and it just sounds like an enormous ball-ache. The 'prep' side of things is overwhelming and sounds irredeemably dull to be honest. If I could press a few buttons and automatically have the version of a Pokémon I wanted to use, I'd be cool with actually leaning strategy. It's all the tedium of prepping your team. Most of it doesn't even sound difficult, just awfully tedious. |
Pikazilla
01.17.22 | It takes minutes on Showdown. Battling irl, on the other hand, yes, is a real fucking pain. Breeding to get the movesets/IVs you want takes a while. That's why I stick to fangames nowadays. Just use debug mode when needed. |
Demon of the Fall
01.17.22 | That's cool if you can jump straight in!
I'll look into it. |
Dedes
01.17.22 | Tbf you could literally just rip the stats straight from smogon if you want to
9/10 times they know what's best lmao |
Demon of the Fall
01.17.22 | I've read a surprisingly large number of those Smogon pages for someone who's never even built a team, let alone played online. Haha. |
Pikazilla
01.17.22 | Trolling tf out of Smogon teams is one of the most satisfying experiences you can have on Showdown |
el_newg
01.17.22 | I like using the teambuilder but comp battling is so fuckin boring to me because of switching and tanks/stalls
I bred 20-30 comp ready pokemon in SwSh but like every single one of em is a glass cannon lol |
el_newg
01.17.22 | I enjoy the battle tower stuff in-game because it can be tough sometimes but not obnoxious |
Pikazilla
01.17.22 | Play doubles, seriously. It's so much better. |
TheSpaceMan
01.17.22 | gen 7 ou or nothing |
Dedes
01.17.22 | Is gen 7 where they introduced terrain? |
TheSpaceMan
01.17.22 | not sure tbh but its in there |
TheSpaceMan
01.17.22 | gen 8 is just wack so i play 7 |
SteakByrnes
01.17.22 | Terrain was in gen 6 but it was way more popular in gen 7 because of the tapus |
TheSpaceMan
01.18.22 | yeah i wouldnt waste a turn on dropping terrain |
Dedes
02.14.22 | I have found my new favorite bulky sweeper
Fire Punch Miltank |
Cygnatti
02.14.22 | In gen 6 and less so in gen 7, I was a Pokémon breeder. I would take requests (x poke with y ability with z nature and m move(s)). Usually for something else in return but not always. It was fun for me. We had a smallish fb crew and would do multi battles almost every day.
Pulled in some favors to get me a couple of 6IV dittos. And once I got them I duplicated them and used them for bargaining power as well. Miss those days. |
TheSpaceMan
02.14.22 | damn cyg thats awesome. never got into breeding, but its really neat |
Cygnatti
02.15.22 | thanks spacefam. a lot of my friends in that group were casuals but wanted to try out some real battling. hated seeing them lose to players just because their pokes weren't "perfect", so that's why I started doing it and giving it to them. they didn't really have the patience or game knowledge to do it themselves, which is fine, of course. most people don't.
i was on here in sput a lot of the time while breeding em because you just run around hatching eggs so might as well listen to music and browse sput while doing so. 2014 and 2015, I was such a hater lmao. |
Demon of the Fall
02.15.22 | music is great for making otherwise monotonous or even arduous gaming experiences seem worthwhile, lol
Also sounds like I could've done with a friend like you back in the day |
Dedes
02.15.22 | Damn Cyg ur a fucking g
That's actually a very honorable thing cause I sure as hell did not have that level of patience either
I remember how bad the grind for EV's was back in gen 3. IT'S? Hell no |
Cygnatti
02.15.22 | I never did anything but natures breeding in gen 3. In gen 5 I did very basic IV stuff but could reliably EV train (just took forever). I beat everyone at school because I was like the only one that did. Gen 6 made both EV training and IV breeding very feasible.
On Christmas the breeders came up with the idea of giving out cool pokes for wonder trade since a lot of younger kids will be getting the game for the first time. So I took my 6IV modest feebas, asked my friend to make it shiny, duplicated it and the prism scale. Then wonder traded them so random ppl got a level 1 shiny 6IV competitive (name of its hidden ability) milotic. Gave away the rest of the copies to any homies that wanted one. |
Dedes
02.18.22 | Made an Eeveelution team
Whips surprisingly hard
Glaceon got the shaft however |
Pikazilla
02.18.22 | Glaceon and Leafeon are the worst eevilutions yeah |
Dedes
02.18.22 | I wish leafeon were better man
There just isn't enough physical grass moves to support him super well. Like Leaf Blade is good as shit after Swords Dance but otherwise there's not a lotta wiggle room imo. |
Pikazilla
02.18.22 | Grass is generally a shit offensive type, nothing you can do about it |
Dedes
02.18.22 | I suppose you're right. Ain't no fire or fighting tbh
Although sweeper Venusaur is still pretty good imo |
Pikazilla
02.18.22 | Venusaur is more of a tank if anything.
The closest to a sweeper we got in grass type is Rillaboom with its terrain-setting ability + priority Grassy Glide |
Dedes
02.18.22 | Maybe I'm stuck in 4th gen game play but Venusaur can actually be beast under Sunny Day with Solar Beam. He has semitank stats sure but his special attack is bulky as well
I barely know what the fuck a Rillaboom is lmao |
Cygnatti
02.18.22 | Eeveelution teams are sooooo ass lmao
"Venusaur is more of a tank if anything."
depends. in gen 5 he was a sun sweepa! |
Pikazilla
02.18.22 | Things were different during the weather wars era. |
Demon of the Fall
02.18.22 | Leafeon is awesome design-wise, probably limited move-pool though
Sylveon is the worst eevo, they made the eyes way too cutsie
Umbreon is my fave |
Dedes
02.18.22 | @cyg
Face me in the pit bitch
You can't take the calm mind Sylveon sweep |
TheSpaceMan
02.19.22 | 'Grass is generally a shit offensive type'
true but theres huge exceptions. serperior did work |
Dedes
02.25.22 | Anyone down for some pokes
I'm bored and mayhaps slightly drunk |
StonedManatee
04.08.22 | Mega Venusaur FTW!!! I had a wicked Mega Lucario team in gen 6. |
