Year of Video Games: Final

Well, I actually did it. I beat 52 games this year. It was a very fun experiment but not something I think I'll do again. I would like to thank being unemployed for allowing me to pull this off.

Death Touches Us, From The Moment We Begin To Love

50. Super mario 3d world - 7.5/10
I kinda hated this game for the first half and then it started to grow on me. I thought this game was a slap in the face when it came out. It just seemed like a huge downgrade from the Galaxy games and not worthy of being a console seller like the other main series Mario games. And it’s not, I never bought a Wii U, first Nintendo console I skipped, and I’m glad I did. This game is very well made, but all it is is Mario 3D Land but bigger and without the 3D gimmick. My main issue with most of the game is the super zoomed out camera and how easy it is to overshoot your walks or jumps and fall off the fucking levels all the time. It’s especially an issue playing handheld on the switch. Good game, but by far the worst 3D Mario game. At least it’s not complete trash like the New Super Mario Bros. games.

A Short Hike - 8/10
This game is just delightful. It’s one of those games that comes up over and over if you watch game analysis and critique kinda videos on Youtube. It’s basically a mini open world game a la Breath of The Wild mixed with Animal Crossing. Your main goal is to scale the mountain on the island, but there’s tons of other stuff to do like quests for NPCs and minigames like fishing, boat racing, and stick ball. It’s a really emotional game, when you finish scaling that mountain you really feel it. Very similar to Celeste in that way except this game is never really dark or sad or anything like that. This is just a fantastic little game that I would recommend to anyone, it’s also like 7 bucks and on sale even lower.

52. Jak and Daxter - 5.5/10
Precision platforming does not work in 3D. This might be a hot take, but goddamn I am not a fan of falling over and over trying to gauge a precise jump in 3D space while the camera is constantly trying to fuck me. This is the same team that made the Crash games and I never cared for those games either. These kind of games are filled with so much bullshit and jank that can really only be tolerated if you grew up with it. Like I know games I love like Spyro have some really fucking annoying missions and levels, but I grew up with them and am already good at them so they don’t really bother me.

Call Me If You Get Lost

But this game, did not play it when it came out and I really don’t like it. I liked the first few levels until the game got frustrating and I’m just gonna say it, fuck the zoomer, fuck that thing to hell, one of the worst vehicles in any game ever. There’s an entire level where you’re on the zoomer and I just skipped that fucker. Did not 100% a collectathon which is a sin to me but I just couldn’t do it man. Hopefully the sequels are better. Kind of a downer as my last game lol.
