CaliggyJack
07.06.21 | Yugioh, no contest
Magic is great, but the mana system can fuck right off. |
zaruyache
07.06.21 | yugioh is that game that constantly needs to invent increasingly ludicrous powercreeped systems because the devs never figured out how Type 2 works. So.
I tried to play yugioh online and it's impossible to play as an oldbie because modern strats are so powercreeped the game's over in like three turns. How am i supposed to summon exodia the forbidden one (!!!!) against that nonsense i tell you it's unfair |
Minushuman24
07.06.21 | Yugioh pre synchro is a fucking blast |
zaruyache
07.06.21 | my friends stopped caring about children's cardgames before synchros came out so luckily I never wasted time in that era. |

07.06.21 | MTG EDH is a blast. Used to dig Yu-Gi-Oh back in the day but haven't played since GX era. Side note, Dragon Ball Super and Final Fantasy TCGs are honestly really fun. Still not as good as EDH though. |

07.06.21 | yugioh. except a couple yrs ago i decided to go competitive and the actual playing scene was beyond abysmal. but the cards and play system is way cooler i think |
cordwainerbird
07.06.21 | i still have my deck... oh man, i loved that thing. spyrals, that was the archetype i played. considered a "rogue" deck at the time. i got mostly draws or losses with it but i loved those little metal gear guys. fucking great art on the cards |
zaruyache
07.06.21 | even the anime didn't know how to play the gd game so you're not alone there lol |
CaliggyJack
07.06.21 | I still play yugioh with some friends once in a blue moon. Most of us are veterans so we will usually play using Battle City or GX rules cause we aren't the biggest fans of Synchro, XYZ, or Links |

07.06.21 | Yu-gi-oh! all the way. Magic is just a massive headache learning the rules and the card system is more confusing that the duel masters thing. |
zaruyache
07.06.21 | I was on yugioh realms a lot, used to love all the fanfic |
Sharenge
07.06.21 | Yu-Gi-Oh has a cool Japanese anime to go with it so I'm going with that
and it's cool how they don't give a fuck about rules...I feel like every iteration of the franchise has its own system/rules... hell pretty sure even Duel Monsters alone used multiple rulesets and even featured Dungeon Dice Masters over the course of its +200 episodes |
sonictheplumber
07.06.21 | duel masters was fun lol the game nobody on fuckin earth played |
sonictheplumber
07.06.21 | dude i was 8 years old on yugioh realms but i was tellin everyone i was 30 it was pretty retarded |

07.06.21 | I played Yugioh semi-competitively way, way back in the mid 2000s. Played online with YVD, part of the xerocreative forums. I liked Vampire Lord. I stopped playing around the time this Phoenix card came out, can't remember what exactly it was called. I always thought it was a broken game and that I'd probably enjoy Magic more. |

07.06.21 | Flesh and Blood is where its at people. Pokémon and Hearthstone are too RNG heavy, Magic can be particularly unbalanced and pay to win if you play constructed (every tcg has that in some form but mtg in particular), never actually played Yugioh so can't say if its better than any of the others. |

07.06.21 | mtg ayeeee |
Tundra
07.06.21 | Yugioh has gone off the rails lmao, I would argue that you need a vast understanding of every card in the game (or atleast every card in the current meta) to even stand a chance. And theres not even a thing like on Pokemon showdown where you can use Under Used or Rarely Used decks etc. Its all just circle jerk over the best deck until it gets hit on the banlist or something else comes to completely powercreep it out of competitive play. |
nightbringer
07.06.21 | "Its all just circle jerk over the best deck until it gets hit on the banlist or something else comes to completely powercreep it out of competitive play."
Sounds like the game hasn't changed since when I played it then. |
aydross121
07.06.21 | Synchros imo where ok, they made the extra deck more useful in general and where kinda fun to setup/not that easy. xyz onward was just really lame though, Everyone was summoning 5+ monsters each turn. |
nightbringer
07.06.21 | For as long as I played it, Yugioh really struggled to give players more than 1 - at a push, 2 - viable competitive decks at any one time. |
aydross121
07.06.21 | @night was it this card: https://www.trollandtoad.com/yugioh/yu-gi-oh-promo-cards/sacred-phoenix-of-nephthys-een-ense3-secret-rare/142464

07.06.21 | Play a MTG cube with friends, solves a lot of the balance and cost problems. It's an initial investment, but later you can just reap the benefits endlessly
Also, drafting is like amazing, even if you have less than 8 people (the most fun I've had for years now is playing cube 2-man draft) |

07.06.21 | Played mtg for ages and my card collection will hopefully sustain me through old life.
Obviously the best game ever made.
Currently building an Atla Palani EDH deck. |
ReturnToRock
07.06.21 | I'm too old for Yu-Gi-Oh. I was an avid M:tG player from Fourth Edition/Ice Age until like, Onslaught (I think...?) until it got too complicated and everyone went off it (it happened at roughly the same time) so I had no one to play against anymore.
I used to play Goblin Swarm or a red/green hybrid, though I've also experimented with a blue counter deck, with some success.
I was also the king of awful trades as a n00b, I could tell you some stories (I got a Serra Angel on my VERY FIRST starter deck, and traded it for a bunch of commons including Mons Goblin Raider, because 'hurr durr ten cards for one'. Almost a quarter of a century later, that STILL hurts! >_< And there was also the Nightmare around the same time, and the Swords Into Plowshares after I was no longer a n00b and should have known better.) |
nightbringer
07.06.21 | aydross121, yup, that was the one. |
Egarran
07.06.21 | Oh all those things we could have done differently. I think money-wise the biggest mistake was not to buy a black lotus when I started. It was about $350 I think, and I thought that was absolutely ridiculous. Lol to spend that amount on a card would be the height of stupidity.
It's over $20k now. |
nightbringer
07.06.21 | My regrets aren't the dumb trades I made. It was the opposite problem. I tricked so many kids into trading me their amazing cards in exchange for junk. The guilt. |
Egarran
07.06.21 | I think the thing that most pleases me is, late 90s I went to a tournament where some weird dude were selling duals at about $5-10 a card. And I bought A LOT. They're about $300-1000 now. |

07.06.21 | @budgie I don't know. I started out in 1997/98, just as Fourth was being phased out and Fifth was becoming the new standard edition. I stopped around...2002/2003, around the time they started coming out with those pre-made decks.
The expansions I remember off the top of my head are: Ice Age, Visions, Tempest, Unglued, Weatherlight, Stronghold, Exodus, the Urza ones, and Mercadian Masques.
When I used to play, everybody was big on Counter decks and Suicide Black. |

I watch it every couple of weeks to get a good laugh, one of the funniest videos I've ever seen on YouTube, the comedic timing is impeccable *chefs kiss*. The funniest thing however is that modern Yugioh players would actually be triggered by this video, that's how sad of human beings they are. |

A new mechanic introduced in the game in the last seasons. But Don't worry, at least in duel links the classic version of the game is used. Except for the synchro summon. |

07.11.21 | recently bought a copy of Duelists of the Roses myself from work, but it seemed like it was mostly just a rehash of Forbidden Memories with the primary addition/difference being the battle map that you actually traverse and move your cards around on during a duel... maybe I didn't spend enough time with it, but that feature/aspect didn't really appeal to me or add to the experience for me so I put it down and just been popping in Forbidden Memories any time I feel like doing some Playstation Yu-Gi-Oh |
