JKing92 05.06.21	Peace Sells is to me a sonically pleasant (if rather slight) album that nonetheless feels like somewhat less than the sum of its parts, and I can't explain it any more plainly than that. Something about it just never gelled for me as a whole, and trust me, I gave it chances, quite a few since I first heard it when I was 13 or 14 or so. I'll grant a couple of songs (up to -- but no more than -- about half the album), but that's it (even then, the songs I will cop to enjoying -- "Wake Up Dead," "The Conjuring" -- work better as individual moments, and don't even get me started on that cover of "I Ain't Superstitious"). Countdown to Extinction, though, partially because of its more polished sound and heavier emphasis on hooks ("Symphony of Destruction" is perhaps Megadeth's catchiest song ever, period) works incredibly well as a "mainstream breakthrough" album while Rust In Peace has tight focus underscored by a real sense of urgency which is compelling start to finish.

Attack of the Killer B's is a good shout as well, but it's more of a groove/thrash album. Also get any or all of Sepultura's middle 4 albums, any of Slayer's middle 4, Metallica's first three (and self-titled if you like really good heavy rock) , Testament's first three albums, and any Megadeth up to and including Youthanasia. Also Kreator's first few albums, and Pantera's first four albums with Anselmo (the final one isn't that great.)

The cover is fine and is generally something I'd find on-brand for Mustaine in general. I don't know what Wake Up Dead and The Conjuring working better as "moments" mean but most of the other tracks you didn't mention are great and you completely low-ball Good Mourning/Black Friday (likely the best song on the album) and Bad Omen. I don't get how it's not as urgent as Rust in Peace is.

In my opinion, the often-cited jazz-metal flourishes on Peace Sells feel more like window dressing on songs that I could otherwise see slotting into other thrash albums from that period (the first two Metallica albums, in particular). Also, telling me that a song is great, that's opinion. I think "Good Mourning/Black Friday" is fine (if slightly overrated), but I don't like it as much as the two tracks I singled out. And when I say they work better as "individual moments," I meant outside of the context of the album, which feels like somewhat less than the sum of its parts. All I really have left to say is that it's just my opinion. Disagree if you want, but my opinion is not going to change in the foreseeable future.

Relative to which albums are the jazz-metal flourishes window dressing? I'm pretty sure the only other bands that stood as peers in that regard were Watchtower. That was something they were outright pioneers of.

This isn't to knock either something that is old or innovative in a musical sense, but merely to note that no matter how much someone wants to say that something is worthwhile, groundbreaking, etc., if I hear it and I don't like it, then that's that. There are plenty of artists whose innovation I'll freely acknowledge -- the Sex Pistols were important in the development of punk, Iron Maiden certainly melded hard rock with prog in a way that amazed many a fan and musician afterwards. But I don't like/don't care about the end results, and the whole world can sermon me about the "importance," but that doesn't mean that I have to change my mind. What matters is what I hear, not whatever innovation or ability performers can bring to the table. That obviously influences what is made, of course, but innovation doesn't inherently make the music any stronger, in my eye.

Some may agree, others may not, but I will say that the influence is objectively there. I'm not going to deny jazz's influence on the sound of the album -- to do so would be to miss the point even more than I bet you think I am -- I just find that the music isn't really all that different from an album like, say, Ride the Lightning, once you take that surface layer of jazz influence off. (Please note that this is just my opinion. You are free to disagree all you wish, but I will not be moved.)
