| Minimal Wave May - Reviews and Recs
Hello!
I am your host - Petra, or as you may know me, cordwainerbird. On twitter I am known as "realneuromancer". Give me a follow if you enjoy my musings. Today I am gathering you all to bear witness to an event that will be unfolding before you all within the next month. I shall be reviewing albums on this list in sequential order - shooting for three times a week give or take. The goal by the end of the month is to have at least done 15-20 reviews. Not only will it expose people to incredible music and a genre that is criminally underappreciated, but it will show the staff I'm a real competent writer and that I must be "hired" at once! (the tongue is firmly in my cheek) it is never about the pay. I just want to show the world my music : ) | | 1 | | Martin Dupont Just Because
to anyone who has not seen my previous informal minimal wave list, it is here: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1113649&listid=193687
abstract, flowy, dreamlike.... also has some extremely innovative stuff going on sonically. like its beautifully painted album cover, this album lets us in on a painting with its electronic brush strokes and all
Rating: 3.5 - ahead of its time and has some very interesting trip-hop roots in 1984. | | 2 | | Rational Youth Cold War Night Life
an unknown gem of coldwave. i think i'm finally able to approach this one and give it a review it deserves. bear in mind for many of these i do not plan extensive reviews - i will be going in with the mindset that i write as few words as possible while still having a punchy, poignant, effective review. if i end up with more, great. if not, well - we'll see
Rating: 5.0 | | 3 | | Saada Bonaire Saâda Bonaire
A sonically-diverse minimal wave compilation album that all sort of falls under a central theme of sapphic lust and freedom in female sexuality. Rating: 4.0 | | 4 | | Tones on Tail Everything!
Not usually regarded as minimal wave per se, but very dark and gothic post punk that utilizes electronic sound in a fascinatingly unique way. Bauhaus eat your heart out. Rating: 5 | | 5 | | Notchnoi Prospekt Democracy and Discipline
I will enjoy doing this one quite a bit. An experimental soviet act whose music I can maybe describe as... Extremely dark electronic post-punk. Love their insanely wacky synthpop ventures before this album as well. | | 6 | | Notchnoi Prospekt The Colors of the Gilded Years
...so, why not another one! This one will likely be shorter - a bit of a straightforward rockabilly-sensibility record recorded with strange tongue-in-cheek electronics. Some nice surprising moments of quiet on this one too. | | 7 | | Yellow Magic Orchestra Solid State Survivor
One overdue for a review and one I've been saying I'd do for a hot minute. I know by the time I get to this one this month I'll be ready to do it justice. This is all for now. Will continue to update this list as reviews go up. | |
