04.15.21 | so triggered, not even an honorable mention for The Killing Moon??? |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | Akh! My bad. There was so much stuff coming out in this year that my brain was having trouble remembering them all. I'll put it in Honorable Mentions.
Also I could of sworn that song came out in 88 but I just looked it up and I'm dead wrong lmfao. |
quetzal
04.15.21 | I just did a cursory glance of a best of 1984 search on RYM |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | I don't use RYM lmao so that's why. |
quetzal
04.15.21 | You have a way better memory for years than me then |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | I do have good long-term memory but very bad short term memory.
These lists are usually done 2 days in advance because I tend to forget important songs and shit so I end up having to google lyrics to remember why I picked a song. Even then choosing the top 10 isn't done on a whim. This isn't purely memory of course, sometimes I'll do a cursory google search or take a look at the Billboard Top 100 (and 200) of the year. |
Kompys2000
04.15.21 | Booooo at smiths over Metallica and REM
Also BOOOOOOO at nothing off Purple Rain
Idk man you've got some decent picks here but I feel like this is the point where ur rock/metal bias is starting to really show |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | "rock/metal bias"
I will not pretend to deny that accusation. I love all genre's but I do tend to gravitate to some over others, but I would say a lot of my 1982-83 lists were Pop. Also I thought When Doves Cry was 83? Guess not, I'll add it to Honorable Mentions. This year is too good I can't possibly remember everything. |
Kompys2000
04.15.21 | True tbh, 84 is stacked af I can't even deny
Also no shame at all in having biases! I'm just gonna be salty abt all the non-metal stuff I like getting snubbed :P |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | @kompys Guarantee you if you mention a couple of Pop songs from 84 you feel deserve an Hon Mention I bet you I'll agree with you I just either:
A. Forgot it existed
B. Thought it was from a different year
C. Was so focused on one particular thing I forgot about another thing |
Kompys2000
04.15.21 | Hmm idk if I want to tip my hand early since I have my own '80s best lists coming down the pipeline in like uhhhh 7-8 months probably but as far as pop from this year... I guess Take On Me is the obvious standout
Also it's my life by talk talk came out in 84, that's a good one for sure |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | OH MY FUCKING GOD HOW DID I FORGET TAKE ON ME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA |
Kompys2000
04.15.21 | In all fairness it came out late in the year so most ppl associate it more with '85 than '84 |
DoofDoof
04.15.21 | 'Colour of Spring' is '86?
A bit of overlap here, need to check how good that Cocteau Twins tune is - I find them low on really stand out songs usually though I tend to like their atmospherics
UPDATE: hmmm, it's good, not 100% on the whoop whoop 'calling my dog' backing vocal layer hook |
quetzal
04.15.21 | If you feel that way about Cocteau Twins listen to The Spangle Maker
Also I was thinking about albums, not EPs. The Spangle Maker is probably my favorite song from 1984 |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | "'Colour of Spring' is '86?"
Nope '84. I even checked for posterity!
Also yeah Ivo isn't for everybody, but I love the Hell out of it.
Also I had a feeling we would both have Ride the Lightning on our lists but we would have different songs. |
DoofDoof
04.15.21 | Well I love that Talk Talk song so whenever it was released...it's a good one to feature |
DoofDoof
04.15.21 | quetzal - The Spangle Maker wins song title of '84 so off to a good start
UPDATE: yeah, I probably like this one a bit ahead of 'Ivo', still think my favourite Cocteau is sitting on 'Heaven of Las Vegas'. 'Sugar Hiccup' might make '83, was actually the first song I ever heard by them. |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | The fucking guitar gives me an orgasm every time.
EDIT: Added How Soon is Now by The Smiths cuz I completely forgot about that song I was so focused on their debut album. |
aydross121
04.15.21 | Ivo is so good |
zakalwe
04.15.21 | Life’s What You Make It is 1985 |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | ^This guy gets iiiiiiiiiit |
Titan
04.15.21 | Love Ain't No Stranger is such a great Whitesnake song....good choice |
CaliggyJack
04.15.21 | YEEEEEEEESSSS |
CaliggyJack
04.16.21 | LMAO So I made a bad mistake.
The song I meant to put up on there was "Call in the Night Boy" from It's My Life. Zak was right, Life's What You Make It was '85
What a dumb mistake jesus |
DoofDoof
04.16.21 | Well it might have made my 85 list as I was going by the album release of the song which is 86 and I'd already picked 'Living in Another World' from that album
I've gone mostly by when the tracks were released on albums rather than as singles |
CaliggyJack
04.16.21 | LMAO, just because this '84 honorable mentions list clearly isn't big enough. I forgot Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. |
DoofDoof
04.16.21 | Not a massive fan of his version but it is a classic song |
CaliggyJack
04.16.21 | Honestly in top 3
1. OG Leonard Cohen Version
2. John Cale Version
3. Jeff Buckley Version |
