A Black Metal Odyssey 1994-2021

Hey dudes. Started listening to bm in 1994 and these are the albums that have most resonated. I've included one song per album that I dig most.
1Satyricon
Dark Medieval Times

1994. I was given a taped tape of this in school and was intrigued by the atmosphere. Was very different to the straight up Pantera and Sepultura I was listening to at the time.
Choice track: Dark Medieval Times
2In the Woods...
Heart of the Ages

1995. The same kid gave me a tape of In the Woods. Again I couldn't believe the art in this music.
Choice track: Yearning the Seeds of a New Dimension
3Bal-Sagoth
Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne

1996: I found out about this band from a Cacophonous flyer in the cd cover for Cradle's Vempire EP. Loved it.
Choice track: Summoning the Guardians of the Astral Gate
4Limbonic Art
In Abhorrence Dementia

1997: Was looking for bm with keyboards. This was the most evil and coolest thing I'd ever heard.
Choice track: When Mind and Flesh Departs
5Cradle of Filth
Cruelty and the Beast

1998: Their magnum opus. Their greatest line-up and most sinister album.
Choice track: Thirteen Autumns and a Widow
6Windir
Arntor

1999: My favourite Windir. Takes you straight to the ancient land of Norway.
Choice track: The Blacksmith and the Troll of Lundamyri
7Cradle of Filth
Midian

2000: Not archetypal bm but what I was listening to in 2000. A great album in its own right.
Choice track: Cthulhu Dawn
8Dimmu Borgir
Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia

2001: Dimmu was big in my metal upbringing. The most drumming based bm I know, with NB assuming duties.
Choice track: Architecture of a Genocidal Nature
9Immortal
Sons of Northern Darkness

2002: Bergen's finest.
Choice track: Demonium
10Windir
Likferd

2003: RIP Valfar.
Choice track: Fagning
11Dark Fortress
Stab Wounds

2004: Dark stuff.
Choice track: Self Mutilation
12Chthonic
Seediq Bale

2005: Bm's global reach has always impressed me.
Choice track: Quasi Putrefaction
13Enslaved
Ruun

2006: I prefer Enslaved's progressive bm to their early work.
Choice track: Fusion of Sense and Earth
14Primordial
To the Nameless Dead

2007: Their best work.
Choice track: Gallow's Hymn
15Coldworld
Melancholie²

2008: A classic in the genre.
Choice track: Dream of a Dead Sun
16Nazxul
Iconoclast

2009: Laden symphonic bm. Quality.
Choice track: Stain of Harrow
17Burzum
Belus

2010: Hypnotic. Speaks to me more than his early work.
Choice track: Glemselens Elv
18Nightbringer
Hierophany of the Open Grave

2011: Oh the extremity. Brilliant bm album.
Choice track: Lucifer Trismegistus
19Lunar Aurora

20Fen
Carrion Skies

2013: Expansive atmospheric bm of the highest quality.
Choice track: Menhir - Supplicants
21Caladan Brood
Echoes Of Battle

2014: Epic and masterful album.
Choice track: Book of the Fallen
22Nechochwen
Heart of Akamon

2015: A great example of the beauty and sadness in bm. A must listen.
Choice track: Lost on the Trail of the Setting Sun
23Coldworld
Autumn

2016: Another masterpiece. Very dark.
Choice track: Womb of Emptiness
