| Dir En Grey Ranked
My favorite band of all time, no cap | 10 | | Dir En Grey The Insulated World
My least favorite, but not bad by any stretch. A solid 4 songs here belong in the band’s top 20 tracks. The rest sadly is either forgettable or just derivative. | 9 | | Dir En Grey MACABRE
One of the outliers for me, the title track is immaculate, but this is one of the band’s weaker offerings for sure. | 8 | | Dir En Grey Kisou
A darker, more complex take on the band’s early sound. Not as great as Gauze but still very notable | 7 | | Dir En Grey Withering to Death
This is one i have a hard time getting into, some tracks i just straight up dislike, but a majority of it is fantastic. | 6 | | Dir En Grey The Marrow of a Bone
More of a standard metalcore album, but also has a great sense of atmosphere and a handful of the band’s best tracks. | 5 | | Dir En Grey Dum Spiro Spero
While i’m not personally a fan of the deathcore inspired sound on this, the dark atmosphere and melodies are as fantastic as ever. Slightly more experimental in some areas compared to Uroboros, but also dumbed down in other areas. | 4 | | Dir En Grey GAUZE
A catchy, engrossing Visual Kei masterpiece. It’s a lot lighter than everything after it, but it has a very disturbing underbelly, not unlike their other work. | 3 | | Dir En Grey Vulgar
The best of their pre-Uroboros work. Dark and heavy as all hell, and boasts some of the band’s more memorable melodies. | 2 | | Dir En Grey Uroboros (Remastered & Expanded)
The most obvious choice for #1, and my favorite album of all time. Absolutely cryptic and nightmarish to its core with some grandiose, powerful melodies sprinkled throughout. Kind of feels like descending into the most bizarre version of hell with no hope of escape. Vinushka is one of the greatest openers ever too. | 1 | | Dir En Grey Arche
Arche may not be as notable as Uroboros for a lot of people, and while it’s not my favorite of theirs, it’s certainly their best album in every aspect. Incredibly unique and varied with some of the best performances i’ve ever seen on a metal LP. | |

02.13.21 | uroboros remastered and expanded
it's a masterpiece | Demon of the Fall
02.13.21 | Uroboros is a great time, apart from that one I’ve only heard DSS and was a little disappointed but may have to revisit. I’m definitely looking to go deeper at some point. | porcupinetheater
02.13.21 | Straight up. And if you loved Vulgar you'd probably find a lot to appreciate about Withering to Death, too | Brabiz
02.16.21 | I always found DSS a bit disappointing tbh. I’d say jump into something like Arche or Vulgar, they’re both incredible albums. |
