DavidYowi
02.09.21 | I remember saying this in the EOTS thread but I had Raze the Stray on in my car one time and the intro almost had me in tears. I had heard that song multiple times so I'm not sure what it was in that moment that made it hit so hard. |
BMDrummer
02.09.21 | i think their pre-Albini run is still my favorite stuff, but still such a fucking perfect band |
evilford
02.09.21 | Yes^^^
@david it's a beautiful intro |
porcupinetheater
02.09.21 | Yesss all top 6 are within the margin of error for a 5 minimum
Eye of Every Storm always 1 for me, got the hooks in me at just the right moment and there them hooks gonna stay m/ |
evilford
02.09.21 | Not going to argue with that my friend |
porcupinetheater
02.09.21 | Really like that they haven’t disavowed Pain of Mind and Word as Law either, took the time with the remasters and shit. So many bands woulda swept em under the rug and washed their hands of some pretty tight shit |
evilford
02.09.21 | Pain of mind is pretty good. TWAL is a really important transitional record in their discog and is nearly a 4. Their dedication to their music and their fans is very lovable |
porcupinetheater
02.09.21 | Do you think von Till’s fourth grade students KNOW? |
evilford
02.09.21 | Lol idk. Im sure it's not something he advertises but at this point it is probably somewhat difficult to keep that completely out of the classroom.
Wish he would have been my teacher! |
porcupinetheater
02.09.21 | Lol right? No Schoolbus to Take Me Home
Fear and Sickness (Are Only an Excuse to Stay Home if you Are Running a 100 Fever) |

02.09.21 | Hey thanks man |
Ryus
02.09.21 | one of those bands/subgenres i thought id love on paper : [ |
evilford
02.09.21 | Don't dig em Ryus? Which albums have u heard? |
Ryus
02.09.21 | i like them alright, but nothing above a 3.5/5 and nothing id come back to that much. i think ive heard 1, 4 and 6. just dont find it as bonecrushing as id like |
porcupinetheater
02.09.21 | Yeah, I think the fact they’re sold as cataclysmically heavy (especially Silver) short sells the surreal nocturnal atmos they do so well. Askew expectations are fucking real |
evilford
02.09.21 | Yeah they're not a bonecrushing band per se instrumentally but the atmospheres they create are so uniquely bleak, ominous and crushing in their own right. But yeah if u don't dig, u don't dig. No point in trying to force it.
BUT, if you DO ever get the itch again, I'd say check 5. It has a lot of the atmospheric elements they'd dive even deeper into on later records but instrumentally it's also really heavy and crushing imo. Might be the difference in what you were hoping to find |
Dewinged
02.09.21 | 4, 2, 6, 1, 3, 7, 12, 5, 9, 8, 11, 13 would be my take, but honestly, you can't go wrong with this band, they all rule. |
evilford
02.09.21 | Heck yea bro |
Yazz_Flute
02.09.21 | Started going through their discog again recently. Haven’t paid much attention to their earliest stuff but I probably fall somewhere like this:
The Eye of Every Storm
Through Silver In Blood
Souls At Zero
Given To The Rising
A Sun That Never Sets
Enemy Of the Sun
Times of Grace
Fires Within Fires
Honor Found In Decay |
kevbogz
02.09.21 | can i be honest ford? |
evilford
02.09.21 | Yes |
kevbogz
02.09.21 | i saw Neurosis with Converge and Amenra but never really listened to em all that much. is this list the place to start? |
evilford
02.09.21 | The first neurosis i chose to jam in like 2010/2011 or something was Through Silver In Blood. I immediately thought it was the greatest thing I've ever heard and the rest is history.
THAT SAID, most people I've talked to have said that that was the opposite of their experience with the album; it was a harder nut to crack for them, etc. Still rewarding, but inaccessible.
But this list is just my favorites from them ranked and not necessarily an effective listening order. Based on what I've heard from most people's experiences, i think your best bet is to check The Eye of Every Storm first. It is their most accessible album, and it's one of their best which means it rules of course. :-)
But I mean almost any album you check can be an ok intro point if you stick with them. Except Neurosis and Jarboe, I wouldn't recommend jamming that until you're quite familiar with the band.
I've never been super great at recommending starting places for people so if someone else chimes in with different input do not feel bad at all if u take their advice instead!
Hope u dig them man! |
evilford
