solrage 12.09.20	Marketa Lazarova was superb. Really underrated film. Also really loved Daises and Closely Watched Trains from the Czech New Wave. Also: Raging Bull is a vastly superior film than Taxi Driver. Latter is one of Scorsese's ugliest films.
tectactoe 12.09.20	I like TAXI DRIVER a lot, undeniably classic for a variety of reasons, but I'd "only" rank it at third at best in Scorsese's filmography. Above it I'd put RAGING BULL (obviously) and THE KING OF COMEDY, which is sorely under-appreciated and/or overlooked. After that, it'd be a three-way battle royal between TAXI DRIVER, GOODFELLAS, and AFTER HOURS (another underrated pick) for bronze.

tectactoe 12.09.20	to be fair, the scenes with sandra bernhard are supposed to be mega-cringe (as are many of the scenes with Rupert / De Niro himself). secondhand embarrassment is kind of a major point of the movie. (not saying the fact that it's intentional should necessarily make it enjoyable, just pointing out that Scorsese, De Niro, Bernhard, Lewis etc. did a very good job of capturing that queasiness.)

MyFriendMetatron 12.11.20	@robertsona I think the appeal for me in Blue Velvet, is Lynch getting his stride after Dune(which I enjoy as a fan of the book and Lynch). It's a filmaker getting his shit together after a supposed failure. Mulholland might be best Lynch, but Blue Velvet just resonates more with me because on a surface level I've had the misfortune of seeing situations like this as a kid. I can firmly put myself in Jeffrey's point of view, which kind of sucks but makes the movie more impactful.

Masochist 12.12.20	I'm a huge animated movie fan, especially those that are really good at showing instead of telling, and letting us actually "live" in the world they created. As such, my two favorites are Wall-E and the first How To Train Your Dragon. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse will probably be up there in time too. For live-action movies, Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, the first Avengers movie, and...Snatch. I fucking LOVE Snatch. And for off-kilter movies, the one that really stuck with me way more than I ever thought it would was Suspiria (the original). Art-house thriller that predates The Shining, and I think when you watch it you can see the ways the former inspired the latter as far as movie-making goes.
