11.20.20 | ehhh don't know about that hate on zoos, some can be fucked up for sure, but for a long time, zoos aren't any more just a collection of hopeless animals trapped in a cubicle for our futile enjoyment although we can still have great joy in seeing those majestic species. The ones that are good, really do a great job on educating people about those animals, and where those animals came from in the first place while also making sure all their needs in all possible levels within a zoo are being fulfilled with help from specialized vets and zoologists. As a biologist now I understand, how zoos can also be of importance for genetic and population conservation of endangered species, and also as an opportunity to better understand the behaviour of wild animals and possible diseases that could afflict them. |

But most of the animals in the zoos come from rescues from contraband, circus, illegal collectors, or just injured animals who aren't in conditions for returning to their natural habitats any more. After reproduction in captivation, most of the animals are returned to the wild, and when in conditions to be returned, the other animals also are.
if there weren't these quality zoos around, these animals would certainly be in way poorer conditions. |

a good way to tell if the zoo near you is a good zoo is to see if it's AZA acredited. Like the people above are explaining, a lot of zoos double as wildlife rehabilitation, and between that and the awesome educational factor that they provide, zoos have the power to do a lot of good! |
