10.11.20 | which ones hav u Tried... |
budgie
10.11.20 | cool idea for a list
the list im seeing is from 2018 data:
i've only had either pliny the elder/younger i don't remember which one
but i see alesmith on the list, used to live like 1000 meters from their building
it's weird that some breweries are represented 3+ times on this list though, doesn't seem like something that should happen if thousands of breweries are considered
|
robertsona
10.11.20 | oh yeah its total nonsense. are like 35 of the best 50 beers really all stouts |
budgie
10.11.20 | yeah, one brewery is on here 9 times, lol. must be a reeeeeeeeeeeally good brewery |
robertsona
10.11.20 | note to self total wine seems to have:
bourbon county brand coffee stout (9)
parabola (31)... |
budgie
10.11.20 | what's the (31) for? |
robertsona
10.11.20 | oh those are the only others in the top 50 I can find around my place. those are their ranks! |
budgie
10.11.20 | ah i see.
you should just go to bevmo and buy tripel karmeliet or la chouffe and never refer to these weird lists again 😂 |
AsleepInTheBack
10.11.20 | Had 2 and 6 myself from your list. Very envious, particularly of 4 and 7 on your list. Managed to track down a westvleteren 12 this week, excited to crack it. |
budgie
10.11.20 | mm them trappist beers are the best man |
AsleepInTheBack
10.11.20 | Indeed. The whole adjunct/pastry stout craze atm is frustrating, I'd rather the craft brew scene turn to belgian and other less trodden territory. What Vault City are doing with sours, for example, is fantastic. |
Colton
10.11.20 | best beer is Rolling Rock |
robertsona
10.11.20 | yah yah cheap/normal/widely distributed beers are amazing too. yuengling is my all time favorite but I like nearly all of them |
bgillesp
10.12.20 | 2 and 4 are too syrupy for me. I like my super heavy stouts to still taste like something other than sugar. Though I’m certainly in the minority thinking those 2 are mediocre. Would love to try some more of these on the list |
Sinternet
10.12.20 | dont even like beer but i dont trust north americans to do it justice anyways |
bgillesp
10.12.20 | Not sure where you live but if you ever go near Asheville, NC, do not miss Burial Beer Co. They won’t be at the top of beer advocate, but they have the best DIPAs I’ve ever tasted except for maybe Trillium’s |
JustJoe.
10.12.20 | hey gilly |

10.12.20 | I just picked up toppling goliath Kentucky brunch. It's to sweet and syrupy for me.
Had narke kaggen stormaktsporter. It was too thick for my liking.
Westvleteren 12 is ok if I feel like having a German beer.
Really I prefer rolling rock |
farmerobama
10.12.20 | Come to Germany, we have some delicious beers to taste |
dedex
10.12.20 | :cries in Belgian beers:
While I liked almost every North American micro-brewery beers I've tasted, this beeradvocate list is way too NA centric |
zakalwe
10.12.20 | Absolute wank |
Pheromone
10.12.20 | thanks for stopping by zak

man how much did you pay for that?! |

Demon of the Fall
10.12.20 | '5: Heady Topper. Dad went to Vermont for some job thing or to ski or whatever and brought it back.'
I saw the thread topic and immediately imagined zak's reaction, the first one definitely helped up the anticipation, then simply this...
'Absolute wank'
Never change. |
Pheromone
10.12.20 | come on zak mate have you never had a cheeky weekend ski in the alps?
|
zakalwe
10.12.20 | I’ve eaten a ski yoghurt in Vange so nearly there. |
Demon of the Fall
10.12.20 | Anyway... I love me some fancy wanky beer, but these lists and 'beers to try before you die' (or whatever) don't really whet my whistle. It's hard to separate genuine impartial praise from paid-for advertising dressed up as something else. I don't know much about the American stuff, but the fact several beers from the same brewery make it onto these things strikes me as potentially biased. |
AsleepInTheBack
10.12.20 | @dedex got westvleteren 12 from hoptimaal for around 12 euros, which, so far as I'm aware, is a big step up from what you'd pay by going to the brewery or cafe, but given it's reputation i figured it wasn't an astronomical price to pay just to give it a try. more than i'd typically be willing to spend on a 330ml bottle, although some of the barrel aged stuff can often sit around that price anyway, so eh |
dedex
10.12.20 | 12€ is an almost cheap price if you get it outside of the brewery! imma check hoptimaal now eheh
although tbh it doesn't taste too different from Westmalle, but I guess their "marketing" makes 'em special |
Egarran
10.12.20 | But have you ever worn a flat cap? |
Grimlin
10.12.20 | A liquor store in SW Colorado randomly had a good amount of Heady and Focal Banger available a few months ago. Grabbed some on two separate visits a month apart. No one knew what it was apparently. Both are amazing, but FB edged out HT for best imo. |
Demon of the Fall
10.12.20 | Woah, okay I'm out. You guys must really be into this shit to be spending that much on one bottle. I love the stuff, but a man has limits. I'd be expecting to go out and have 2-3 pints for that price (depending on whether it's local cask stuff or speciality / potentially import keg - and I drink more of the former). The local craft brewery scene is pretty much all I need tbh. |
AsleepInTheBack
10.12.20 | yeah, its become quite an expensive hobby that I'd rather spend less on that i currently do. then again, id love nothing more than to fly out to Vermont, rent a truck and pick up a fuckton of Alchemist and Tree House, which i imagine wouldn't exactly be a cheap trip from the UK... |
Rolling Girl
10.12.20 | Some good shit on here. Bourbon County and Maine were always big hits when my the bar I worked at got them in. Though I only really like sours myself. Toppling Goliath’s Dragon Fandango was beautiful |
robertsona
03.02.21 | Been getting into stupid expensive beers lately. 4 pack of DDH Double Mosaic Dream from Brooklyn’s Other Half brewery last night. Brasserie Cantillon’s Fou’ Foune and Toppling Goliath’s Mornin’ Delight OTW. Have at me!!!! |
butt.
03.02.21 | Regarding CBS and KBS - yeah both used to be super exclusive, like I remember the year I turned 21 all the stores in my area (30 mins from Founders production facilities) were holding KBS behind the counters on release day and you had to know the owners personally, and limited at one 4-pack per person. CBS used to be bottled ONLY for Founders employees like once every 3-4 years, now I can go to literally any store and find it. Kinda sad because the hunt made it fun, but both beers are amazing.
Side note, there are now Espresso and Mackinac Maple Fudge variations of KBS and they are both to diieeee for. If y out can find them, get them. Do not hesitate. |
robertsona
03.02.21 | I see KBS everywhere, but CBS I’ve only seen recently at the place across state lines in NY. Got it a couple weeks ago again, and it was bottled ‘19–don’t think they bottled them this past year! Not crazy rare even so tho yah. Shit is so good, maybe should blind taste test C and K but feel like the maple makes it for me. Best stout I’ve had, we’ll see how the (non barrel aged) Mornin’ Delight holds up |
robertsona
03.02.21 | Been looking for Double Sunshine lately (it’s fucking nowhere) — might be my GOAT |
AsleepInTheBack
03.02.21 | CBS/KBS are yum. never managed to find the espresso and fudge variants in the UK but im on the lookout.
managed to snag a couple of bottles of bourbon county 2020 a couple of weeks back, again one that used to be super limited and now isn't, but id never tried it, so im hyped to crack them.
ALSO, cracked my westy12 a few months back. the hype is justified imo. very one note sweet liquorice caramel raisin type stuff but really impressed by how much flavour they packed into an adjunct-free brew. |
robertsona
03.02.21 | Need to try Westy. Abt 12 and Rochefort 10 didn’t sell me on Belgian quadrupel type stuff but always willing to give it another go
bourbon county fucks, my brother liked it better than C and K |
AsleepInTheBack
03.02.21 | tbf id usually take a good (ba) barley wine over most quads, and Rochefort 10 is pretty hit or miss to me, but i think Westy is pretty tough to beat. i think they vary a lot with age though, so i've heard. apparently they can easily get overcarbed.
KBS is probs my fave stout so id be hyped as fuck if bourbon county edged it out |
dedex
03.02.21 | yo Rochefort 10 fucking rules m/
ok i really gotta order a Westvleteren, been told for ages it tastes like Westmalle so gotta make my own judgment |
butt.
03.02.21 | If you guys have never tried Bell’s Expedition stout, get on that immediately. The BBA version is hard to come by but it is my absolute favorite stout of all time |
