The weird fire demons, the tunnel scene, the costumes, everything about this film was horrifying to my young mind. Traumatized me like nothing else. My brother and I probably put in 600-700 hours in SSBB throughout our childhood. We only played through Subspace Emissary a couple times (~70 hours); however, there's this place in the second half of the game where you play through space trying to get all the character trophies back and the theme that plays is the background was basically my first exposure to unsettling media back then. That little insect-sounding synth passage creeped me out so much that I never bothered to go through that area again. Now... I'm still not a big fan of it, but for different reasons. The production's awfully dated (everything sounds like it came from a modern-day Casio), there's too many things going on at once, and the atmosphere's too inconsistent for how short of a track it is. Despite there being much, much better pieces from the OST, here's still some intriguing passages to pick apart from the track so I guess it's got that going for it. Again, the track probably isn't that great, but I want to be as genuine as I can with the story. |

09.30.20 | My official pick is Procol Harum, "Nothing That I Didn't Know" from the album Home. It didn't so much frighten me as make me sad and uncomfortable. I was a young teen when the album came out. Most of the album is full of epic stories, stories about a maggot that dreams he's a man, stories about the God's in Olympus, etc. But this one is just a quiet, mournful, realistic disease about a 26yo woman who died from some sort of horrible disease (probably cancer). It's a song about something that's a real-life horror on an album that's mostly full of wild adventures and Halloween-type horrors.

I think I was in first grade when this happened. My mother is an elementary school teacher and often had to stay late at work after school to finish grades and things like that, and I usually stayed with her because she taught at the school I went to. It was the middle of December and snowing like a mother fucker, so the night was already a little threatening. We walked out to the car, but just as we were about to leave she had to run back inside to grab something. She left me in the car with the heat and radio running, so I just sat and waited for her to come back. The song that was playing ended, and then it got pretty quiet. I got uncomfortable because it was dark, snowing and my mom was taking a lot longer than I was expecting. Then all of a sudden I faintly hear "Hello.... Is there anybody in there?" At this moment I was convinced somebody was outside of the car and was trying to kidnap me. I freak the fuck out, bailed from the car, and ran to the front entrance of the school and started screaming for her to let me in. She eventually showed up, and I told her what happened. She obviously didn't believe that I was gonna get kidnapped, (it was in a town of under 100 people, and almost all of them are alseep by 7pm or are related to us), or that there was a ghost in her car, so she just brushed it off.
I sort of forgot about that for years until I was riding in the car with one of my friends back from a baseball game in high school. His dad had the song burned onto a CD along with a bunch of other shit that doesn't belong on the same disc, (like Godsmack followed up by Celine Dion). I then realized that what I heard was just a song, and I immediately got pissed off. |

I can definitely see why this would be unsettling as a kid. As much as the atmosphere is creepy, the lyrics are quite ritualistic and they have a dom/sub feeling to them that probably wouldn't be understood very well by younger kids. Regarding the song's quality, the production's solid and the singer is engaging and excting. My only issue is that the melodies and instrumental passages felt like they've been done before in earlier eras of metal music. Nonetheless, it's a pretty great song and the tidbit at the start of the music video was well done.

I understand that it can be really difficult to properly fuse a song like this into a live action movie, especially in the 1980's. However, this integration is severely hindered by terrible production and mixing. It's kind of a shame, tbh, even if the song is only decent without those issues.

When I was a little kid, "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles always scared the daylights out of me. Mostly it was because I misinterpreted the third verse (Father McKenzie/Wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave) to mean that McKenzie had died and come back to life as a zombie, and so I figured the song was about some kind of zombie apocalypse where everyone who lived miserable, lonely lives as humans returned from the grave to terrorize the rest of us. Plus, the minor-key melody and those staccato strings always gave me a bit of a horror-movie vibe.

I grew up in the small village where the Netherlands' most famous theme park (The Efteling) is located. I feel like I pretty much grew up in the Efteling, but one thing that scared the living shit out of me as a child (5/6 years old) was the Haunted House show (Spookslot). Especcially the three creeps at the top gave me legit nightmares as a child: https://nl.pinterest.com/pin/112378953186682936/. Although the show itself hasn't aged well, the entire thing is still one of the better haunted houses I've seen in terms of atmosphere, occult vibes and general uneasyness. Dance Macabre is used as the music for the show and I think most dutch people will know it more because of its use for the attraction than as a self contained piece of music. It is still a fantastic work of art though. |

5. Step: Subspace: 3.3 I like the fact there is a lot going on, adds to the intensity and stress of the situation. It is dark, and I can imagine it being the soundtrack to the game.
6. Drive: 4.1. It has been a long time since i have listened to this album, used to love it. Song is instantly familiar, it is very simple, but has a nice build up.
7. Jam 10 Kai Thie. 3.7 Could see this song used for a Tarantino film.
8. Nothing That I Didn't Know. 3.5. Yep this one is a sad song, everything about it, gives a melancholy feeling.
9. Scream Soundtrack. 2.0 There is a lot happening here as well, but it doesn't all come together that well. Just sounds like a mess, kinda creepy though.
10. Comfortably Numb. 4.0 Love the story rock, song itself is a classic. Film clip is quite scary too.
11. Playing with spiders/Skullcrusher. 4.0 Love the intro here, when the guitars kick in, it is almost stoner metal. Not a big fan of the vocals, was always thrash's weak point for me. Takes a long time for this track to speed up, but it is worth the wait, then back to the sludgier riffs, great track.
12. Báthory Erzsébet: 2.8 From the first low pitch bell toll, then the wait, then the second strike, you can tell this will be scary. Takes a long time for it to kick in, OK, here we go, yep listening with headphones on is quite haunting. The screams, sound like a wounded animal, or a daemon from a horror movie.

Or it was something about the price of stamps. One of those. Over 11 minutes in, and he still sounds like the guy at the Taco Bell drive-thru. Geez, how am I gonna score this? I'm usually not even aware of whose rec a song is when I'm writing about it.
I have a friend who's a published crime novel author who actually used to pay me to do that with her books, and she didn't want me to censor myself at all - she would be disappointed if I didn't have at least a few brutal comments for each of her manuscripts. (I actually wound up saving a character's life once - I felt weirdly proud of that.) But I know that not everyone wants that. |

10.24.20 | Aelters - This is another band I'm totally unfamiliar with. Weird little electronic sounds, followed by percussion and more weird little electronic sounds. I hate autocorrect. I entered "aelters" in the Sput search engine, but it got changed to "welters". Grr. OK, the song is rolling along in a repetitive, but pleasant enough, fashion. What the hell were those little yellow creatures from Despicable Me? It sounds like they're the vocalists here. Minions! That's it. This sounds like an entire band made up of Minions. Not the worst idea I've ever heard. It's actually weird, cause I see that this was made in 2006 and Despicable Me didn't come out until 2010, but now that it occurred to me, I would have sworn that that was the sound this band (guy?) was deliberately going for. Too bad. It would have been a brilliant concept. Anyway, I'll give it a 3. |

I was lucky enough to be at the front of a 50,000 audience crowd when NIN put on an almighty show, with Hurt being one of the highlights. I have never seen so many grown men, with mascara running down their faces. Gotta love goths. |

1 (Black Widow): Fairly meat-and-potatoes hard rock even with Cooper's extra dramatic flair. Still, it's executed well enough and I like the Vincent Price intro. SCORE: 3.5
2 (Peter and the Wolf): The narration gives this piece a fairy-tale hokiness that I don't much care for, but the music itself holds up as well as anyone could hope for 80+ years after the fact. SCORE: 3.4
3 (Magic Dance): I've actually never seen Labyrinth before, but this clip makes a pretty strong pitch for it! Bowie's gift for camp makes him a natural fit for Jim Henson's particular brand of variety-show silliness, and the cheesy '80s synths are a lot of fun too. SCORE: 4.0
4 (Requiem in D Minor): It's Mozart, so you really can't go too wrong here lol. Personally, I like my classical a bit more forceful (think Wagner, Tchaikovsky, etc.) but this is still perfectly spooky. SCORE: 3.8, and round that bitch up to a 4 if you feel so inclined
5 (Step: Subspace): I played loads of SSBB in middle/high school but I can't say I remember this one... Agreed that the production's a bit iffy but it's decent I guess. SCORE: 3.1
6 (Drive): Ugh that tense acoustic arpeggio, the bass accents on the verses, the strings that come in later on... I'm a big R.E.M. fan so this was pretty much a gimme, but yeah this is phenomenal, and absolutely the kind of song that would chill me to the bone as a young kid. SCORE: 4.6
7 (Jam 10 Kai Thiet): Solid enough first-wave psych-rock, and the guitar noodling especially is quite nice, but those nasally vocals really bring it down for me. SCORE: 3.3 |

Cash-Op Transit - i like some glitchy stuff but generally only when there is poppy song structure behind the madness. this just sounds like randomness to me. i don't know. 1.5
Hurt - i feel like i'm one of the few people who actually prefer this over the johnny cash cover. anyway this is really good. love the whispered vocals and the outbust afterwards. 4.4

15 - Haunted House - 3.0 - Holy shit I loved this game. Might be the best mario game of all time, along with Super Mario World. Don't remember the soundtrack of this level but it works even though its very minimalistic.
16 - Eleanor Rigby - 3.8 - Not really fond of the Beatles tbh but this is one of their better songs imo. Listening closer to the lyrics I kinda see why it could be creepy, but I've never found the song to be spooky.
17 - Believe - 3.0 - Yeah, she's scary. I can't help myself though, I don't dislike the song. Pretty damn nostalgic.
18 - Come to Daddy - 3.8 - 'pre-listen' that artwork with the title is more disturbing that 90% of what I've actually heard so far. Let's put it on. 'post listen' From someone who hasn't heard anything from Aphex Twin before, this score a legit 9/10 in terms of the scaryfactor. Don't really enjoy the music, but its scary alright.
19 - Danse de la Fee Dragee - 4.2 - I know this mostly from Disney's Fantasia and never saw it as creepy, but know that I view it under that lens I can see it. Love this piece.
20 - D.O.A. - 3.5 - This is nice. Can't really put my finger on it but it has a quality to it that I really like. The slightly occult vibes are a little spooky I guess but there's scarier ones out there. Still, I was entertained throughout.
