OSDM
Been on a long kick of pure 90s and late 80s death metal, with the obvious hints of thrash. These are the records I’ve gorged myself hardest upon.
I’ll add more if people want, I’ve got a fuckton of old shit that people don’t talk about. |
| 1 | | Cryptopsy None So Vile
A completely subjective opinion, but my favorite death metal album. Absolutely filthy, both musically and in the trash recording quality, which for me is a bonus that was oddly not as ugly as on the debut record. Lord Worm just sounds like a rabid dog with his head in a trash can and I feel it in my intestines. |
| 2 | | Depravity (FIN) Silence of the Centuries
Finland DM kicks so much ass. There’s a certain melodic quality to a lot of Swedeath that strikes me kinda sour, I dunno. |
| 3 | | Pestilence Consuming Impulse
This is objectively the best death metal album of all time and if you disagree you are just wrong. |
| 4 | | Illdisposed Four Depressive Seasons
Interesting to see bands who ripped these classics still going. Haven’t checked out any recent Illdisposed albums, but I’m curious. There are a load of examples of fantastic DM bands going to shit later on. |
| 5 | | Baphomet (NY) The Dead Shall Inherit
This kind of gory artwork that’s amateurishly drawn gets me every time. There’s a narrow balance of gross and cartoonish that’s perfect, because some are too nasty and some are too stupid, ha. |
| 6 | | Demigod Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Another band that was still around a decent ways into the ‘00s, but this is their only full record before the turn of the century (along with about a dozen demos). Par for the course with records in that scenario, it’s a fuckin’ crusher. |
| 7 | | Avulsed Eminence in Putresence
Gotta love the prototype art of most tech death/slam records nowadays |
| 8 | | Pungent Stench For God Your Soul...For Me Your Flesh
Again, ARTFULLY landing on the perfect shade of gross that isn’t nauseating. The fact that it rips doesn’t do it any harm, neither. |
| 9 | | Convulse World Without God
Scrumptious, and with such a wholesome message of hope. |
| 10 | | Dismember Like an Ever Flowing Stream
One more stereotypical classic, but well-deserved of praise. Keep coming back to this one, more than Obituary or Autopsy even. |
