Round 6: Season 3: Continental Recfest

We’re down to the final four. Europe. Bring it on. After this the final two will pick any band from any continent.

Damn that first song is basically perfect. It’s hilarious and dancey makes ya think. There’s a lot of really amazing stuff on this album but imo it doesn’t ever quite catch the magic of the first song and I just get sort of gradually disappointed as the album goes by. No bad tracks and super solid but at times can toe the novelty act line. Like sports is a hilarious song but I don’t really feel like it makes a large enough point and is too long. I just feels like a cheap point and laugh track at stupid American culture and whatnot which is great but doesn’t delve deep enough. Maybe that’s the point. There are some really great songs on this motherfucker and the sax inclusion is always warmly welcomed. Didn’t quite kick my ass though. Didn’t quite get my brain or body moving enough to warrant a win but it is a great album regardless. Dudes voice is amazing. This band is going somewhere in the future I think.

I fucking hated this upon first listen. I hated it upon second listen. Third listen I started to appreciate it a little more but still couldn’t get into. Then something happened and it just clicked. I started finding all sorts of new things each listen and getting really hypnotized by the repetition. I still think this album has some flaws such as you knows it’s too long and it doesn’t need to be THAT repetitive. Surprisingly there are quite a bit of dynamics to this record. It is not perfect but it hits certain things for me that I can’t find in a lot of other music. It’s noisy but never straight up atonal or without some kind of melodious sound to latch onto. It’s extremely rhythmic but not exactly danceable which I hated at first. How you gonna make beat-heavy music that you can’t dance to? I don’t love this record but it convinced me that electronic music might actually be worth my time in the future which is saying a lot.

Another case where the first song just rules and the rest just doesn’t quite stand up to it but that doesn’t mean this thing isn’t full of bangers! Sort of get a psychedelic Buzzcocks vibe from this. The songs are ridiculously catchy and I can’t get a lot of them out my head. Great songwriters here. There are some flaws though. Glaring ones. The wack ass 80s production brings this way down. Those drums sound like shit. The melodies and aesthetic come off kind of normie though. Like not very punk and very pop. That shit sucks. I can look past a lot of that because it’s performed very well and the band has a certain knack you don’t find in many bands. This was very good and I couldn’t decide if this one made it or not so I basically called it a tie with Trifolium but Trifolium won last round so he gets that .1 boost and that’s literally the only reason he beat your rec.

I don’t know if I concocted this myself or if someone told me this but I’d always just though this band was a total Big Black rip off band so I never checked them out. Holy shit I’m stupid. Not only does this not sound like Big Black they musically kick their ass! The cover more sonic ground too and take WAY more chances. Starts off in an amazing way and never once lets up off of that consistency. Absolutely perfect all the way through. The only dip is maybe the song Wings but it feels more like a nice breather than a dud. This is so up my alley and right up my neighborhood it practically lives on the same street as me. The sax. The bass. The jagged fuckery. Those vocals The musical risk/reward is off the charts here. This is not only one of the best post-punk albums I’ve ever heard but one of the best albums I’ve heard period. Can’t believe I fucked up and never checked them out before.
