Round 5: Season 3: Continental Recfest

South America bitches! It’s down to Sloth, Sniff,Trif, someone, bot, minush.
1Los Saicos
Demolicion: The Complete Recordings

This is like proto-proto-punk from Peru AKA the country from South America with the best music in my opinion! But there’s lots of good stuff all around I’m sure! I still don’t know much music from here so educate my ass.

Woo boy I mean what not to like here? Cool widdly widdly acoustic guitars. Awesome beats with a lot of indigenous vibes going on. I don’t know the language but they sound cool and I’ll just assume the lyrics are amazing! The short duration as always is a plus for sure. My only complaints is I wish it went a little harder but that’s just a weird personal gripe probably. Plenty of character and without a whole lot of flaws at least that I can find.

Aw man this one was a slow creeper for me. At first I was like nah this is pretty boring. I wasn’t feeling it after a few listens and let it sort of stew for like a week. Listened to some other shit. Completely forgot about it. Came back and was floored haha. Music is so unpredictable at times. Now I can’t stop listening. I need help! The title track especially is like goddamn that’s a fucking song right there. Yeah just a lot of simple stuff but it’s intricate in ways and just sets up the perfect amount of friction and soothingly off-putting. As weird as that sounds. I feel like this dude could make the fattest beats imaginable but instead goes against his instinct and would rather use subtle ways to destroy you. Like a guitarist who you know can shred but would instead rather focus tones or whatever. Yeah amazing stuff here guys check it.

This this has plenty of jams and a shitton of groove to boot. The guitar is super interesting and does a lot more texturally than it does with riffs and whatnot. Nothing here is really flashy or technical. It’s about mood man. And this record has it... for the most part. It definitely has its dull moments even if they are relatively rare.
The album is really short which is great for me but when it’s so short and it has long passages that are less than stellar it’s hard to really compete with some of the other stuff here. The vocals aren’t too impressive either. I also feel like this sort of sound has been done before and better. Still it’s really fantastic and I still dig a lot of the jams. Most of this album is really good. Once again the stacked competition made you lose more than a bad pick.

Like all of your recs so far this is supremely unique. At least to my ears. I mean yeah sure maybe there is like classical or opera crossover or whatever but it seems of it’s time and place. And what’s more unique than a specific type time and place? Some of this sounds a little scary. Some of it sounds ancient and some of it sounds from the future. It’s short and sharp like a good knife. There is no fucking around all the songs get in and out with a purpose and a goal.

Yeah I mean this is stuff I grew up on basically. Skating and thrashing and whatnot. I still have a major soft spot for stuff like this even I’m all old and shit now. But yeah I mean this stacks up pretty well with a lot of music like this that came out before or since. It’s fucking food dude. It’s not too heavy but it’s never thin like some other 80s hardcore releases. It’s fast pissed off music that’s only a little bit metal so yeah I’m gonna dig it.

A little up and down. Which is unfortunate because I was really excited for this. There is still a lot of really good stuff. I mean really good. As far as I can tell though there’s not a lot to be found here that you haven’t really heard before if you like post-punk. It’s got the dissonant guitar and whatnot. The vague funk influence. The post-punk drums. You know what I mean haha. The Joy Division worship. It’s really grey stuff for the most part although there are some duds. Maybe the compilation thing was a detriment for you because this is just so up and down with no flow. Which I guess is to be expected for a compilation but that still doesn’t change the fact that you know I like flow and whatnot in my music. And when all the other albums have that quality in spades it’s hard to compete. There is still a lot to comb through here and plenty of bands to check out. It’s post-punk so it’s great but still.

4.0 (+.1 for winning last round)
