Round 3: Season 3: Continental Rec Tournament

Africa. Still so much to learn. I always try to get into more music from this area but THERE’S TOO MUCH MUSIC! The Boris of this round would be Fela Kuti but there’s not much left of his discography I haven’t jammed yet. Whatcha got?
1Abu Obaida Hassan
Abu Obaida Hassan and His Tambour

On we go. This rounds hint is the winner from last years tournament in the African round. Listen to it if you want if not it’s very minimalist and chanty and percussion based and awesome. Yeah just check it.

Busting right out the gates with some fuckin’ booty shakin’ action. The guitar? Oh yeah it’s amazing. The drums? Forever danceable and purposeful. Always driving the song and keeping the rhythms almost mechanically pushing forward but never in an overbearing way. The bass is a perfect complement and a nice bed of which many layers can be placed upon. The vocals do what they are supposed to do and while not as incredible as the other aspects of the music they never detract and always add to the albums overall feel. What is that feel you might ask? A straight up fucking party. Divaman has recs that can be super hit or miss for me but when he shoots for the more happenin’ party jams he seems to fare much better. This record is such a great time. Perfect for throwing on for a gathering or if you are doing some task by yourself and need some upbeat unserious jams to get you going.

Such a beautiful record. Gorgeous melodies and the perfect amount of chillness to produce a great vibe and atmosphere. Simple yes but effective. The singer sounds beyond gorgeous on everything she touches here it’s quite ridiculous. I love the calm music and the bouncy bass. Would like a bit more percussion as it’s so subtle sometimes it almost appears to be nonexistent. Even though the vibe is laid back and relaxing it never delves into the realm of boring. I can see this fitting perfectly in many kickbacked social situations

This album has everything basically. The beats are top notch. Super interesting, dark, and different. The dudes
voice is super unique and and somewhere between deep and high I actually don’t know how he does it. It’s like gravelly but also sort of smooth and chill but aggressive. The lyrics are pretty wild and touch on so many crazy things and references run the gamut. Some of the lines are a little cheesee but that’s a minor complaint. Fits with the theme you’ve got going on here sniff. This sounds like the future almost.

Fuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccckkkkkkk this is so close to perfect it’s ridiculous. I’m more of an album guy than a song guy but every song here can standalone as a straight up masterpiece. Atomic bomb might be the best one but they are all so fucking good it’s incredible. So funky and groovy and perfect. Everyone should listen to this album. Need to check more of this guys shit.

I don’t understand why people jam shit like the Tallest Man On Earth when this kind of stuff exists. Not that they are the same but this is sort of folk type shit right? I mean every culture has their own version of folk music essentially...right? This sounds ancient. The music and the one playing it. It seems like something all other music has been based on before it. Everything feels deep and connected to a larger part in the universe somehow. Every melody seems to come from the farthest parts of the soul. Any record that can make you feel like it is more important than the ACTUAL music being played usually sits with me pretty nice and good. Not something I would probably put on all the time. It’s too specific sounding for me and a bit serious. Which is fine but if I want to contemplate things in the world and my place in it or other pseudo-intellectual bullshit my dumbass mind can come up with then I’ll probably be looking at this sucker.

It just sounds so cheap you know? Maybe that’s the appeal? It just sounds like outdated Casio keyboards and other fake hand me down instruments. Maybe I was never in the right mood for this. Maybe I’m looking at it from the wrong angle. Maybe I didn’t give it enough of a chance. Maybe it’s a “it’s so bad it’s good” type thing like snakes on a plane or something. Maybe it just sucks? I had high hopes. The cover is super awesome.

Took me a bit to get into this one. It’s a little too upbeat and happy and uplifting and positive and all those types of things. The music carries it though and it doesn’t come off as corny for some reason. Like it legit seems like this dude is an optimistic type of guy. But yeah the music is always pretty major key and nice but it’s just so moving and dancey so all is forgiven. I love the short runtime. Makes digesting it either and you can jam it on repeat basically.

Dude gives his dad a run for his money for real. Maybe slightly less politically charged than his dad but I’ve only heard this album so I don’t know. Yeah I mean this is probably a safe pick but it’s still fucking amazing so I can’t fault you. The horn lines are so sick and it’s got such a energetic and sexual feel to it. The syncopated shit and the layers and progressions the songs make are so outstanding I don’t see how anyone could not like honestly.

Starts off really strong. It’s super dark and seems to blend modern and traditional type shit really well. The guitar is intricate and full of emotional stylings along with some really beautiful fingerpicking stuff. Probably some other instruments I’m not sure of in there too. Percussion is great. The middle section drags really hard though. It’s not nearly as interesting musically and starts really toeing the line as far as lame melodies go. It sounds super uplifting and overly dramatic in certain choruses and stuff and it makes me do a big fat fucking eye roll. Comes back really strong with the last two tracks and the weird spoken word thing. If this round wasn’t so stack this probably would have survived but there’s like a 3-4 song stretch that’s just kind of bleh. Sorry man. My favorite album by you is the one that puts you away.

Strange and otherworldly. If anyone wants to thank me for taking too long it should be botulist because I wrote this album off several times. It kept improving with each listen and I’m still finding all sorts of cool little subtle stuff. It’s just so weird and unlike most things I listen to so it just kept piquing my interest. I love getting high and jamming this thing and letting it take me to another world. Of all the records this round this one has the best percussion which is saying A LOT.
