Grunge Big 4 Ranked
4Nirvana
In Utero

I DO really dig Nirvana, but for genuine haunted souls, Layne comes across as way more mature and less childlike than Kurt to me. The lyricism is a bit too random (I know some people find that endearing, but it's not for me). The musicianship of bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden are also faaarrrr more impressive imo. Still a fun time to jam them every once in a while, but I never understood why they were always the kings of the genre, other than just being commercially appealing and Kurt having a "cool" aesthetic for preteens who hated life.
3Pearl Jam
Ten

Ok so I feel the need to reiterate everywhere that if we were going by live performances, this band would be #1 by far. Over the past decade in a half, every single time I see them live it is an insane experience that I only have with a couple of other bands on the planet (and I've seen hundreds). But going by their albums, if I'm going to be honest I only jam a few of their studio albums. It's not a bad thing, I just don't think they're a studio band and don't really stack up to AiC or Soundgarden in terms of albums. So this is either 1 or 3, really hard to rank these. All of the shitty Eddie Vedder impressions in the world can't turn me off to this band.
2Soundgarden
Superunknown

Goddamn, their riffs just DO NOT stop. And Chris Cornell's range is absolutely unfair. He just sounds like he puts all of his feelings into every note. Damn, I miss when rock actually rocked this hard. Basically a perfect band.
1Alice in Chains
Dirt

I mean, studio wise, these guys incapsulate everything I think of when I think of grunge. Just dirty, epically heavy riffs, complete sorrow and genuine emotion that you can headbang to 100% of the time. I can jam these guys forever and never get bored.
