Initial DRAFT Arcane - Known/Learned Concept Review

As noted in my list yesterday, I have been working on a conceptual review for Arcane's double album - Known/Learned. The general concept of this progressive metal album, present in the lyrics, describes the “fragmented moments in the lives of a father and his daughter, their loss, their love, their journey" and contains "shifting timelines". I interpret this abstract album to be a cyclical story of death and life. My current interpretation of the concept for each song is provided below. An executive summary of the concept (IMO) is included in my response to comments below.
1Arcane
Known/Learned

Promise Pt. 2 – I believe this song involves the passing of the Husband, who is separated from his departed Wife across the spiritual plane. Finally, upon speaking to his departed Wife (“He called out over his shoulder to no one at all, Lost in the wind went the word, never heard by the one”); the husband hears her words “come home” whispered, “caught on the wind”. The trip that he must make to “travel far to find her” is assumed to be in death - “he sang his own funeral pyre, eyes lost in the last breath of fire”. The Husband/Father becomes “lost in dreams of a child with her eyes”, presumably his daughter's, before he passes. This song links with Promise Pt. 1 at the end of the Learned CD.

Unturning – I have seen others suggest that this song describes the husband as a soldier at war – but I am uncertain of this assertion. I believe that this song is from the Wife's perspective about her pending death - “I will dig two graves for us, just want to see this enemy gone”. The Wife (“call me the cancer wrapped in skin”) can see the wear in her Husband's face - “the mask you bear is wearing thin”. The Wife realizes that this sickness is dragging both Husband and Wife down - “the anchor between us drags us down, and in those depths, we will both surely drown”. She does not wish for a helping hand and “just want to see this enemy gone”. She yearns for “peace in the silence” and, towards the end of the song, defiantly states “we'll go down by the sound of the songs that we've sung , and I welcome the drowning, fill these empty lungs”. The use of the term “Brother” may imply that the remaining loved one is not a husband, but instead a brother.

Instinct – I find this song to be from the perspective of the Wife's departed spirit - “I had an instinct to run, I had an instinct to fly, we had it all figured out, you and I” and “Traced endless roads in your skin”. While spirit and body were combined, - “We walked the water we owned”. And when the Wife passes (“Down by the water she fell, we promised blood to the bone”), body and spirit divide - “We ran out in colour...we ran down like water”.

Womb (In Memorium) – I assume this is an elegy to the departed Wife - “Take your rest now”. “Life will pass, we are soil turn to earth”.

Selfsame – I have read that this song concerns the Wife lamenting the Husband's/Soldier's internal war, once he returns from war – but I am uncertain. IMO, it appears to be the Wife's spirit speaking of the Husband, and his continued mourning and stuggles - “fighting the war we sent you on” first – a “war with none left to blame”. The following line also seems to suggest the Wife's departed spirit with no physical voice - “give me the voice to be heard and I will fill my lungs before long I'll cry the end of the world”. The spirit states at the end - “I fought my war, and with my words I find no peace in waiting” - assumed to be waiting for the spirit of the Husband.

Holding Atropos – This track could be the Wife planning for her death - “bring me this quiet breathing, hand by hand, counting the end of my rope, I still have rope, this is where my fight ends”. The end of the song appears to be lamenting of the partner, saying “This has been the only love I've ever known, whispering a goodbye”. Alternatively, this could also be the Husband/Father's passing as well.

Keeping Stone: Sound on Fire – The protagonist, assumed to be the Wife departed, feels that they have been drowned and held underwater with a stone for “one thousand years waiting” - “the water in your lungs is all you've ever owned...and all you know”. “This fire will soon become light” - may refer to the birth of the daughter, as focused on in the Learned CD. This song also uses the term “brother”, indicating that the mourner may be a family member instead of a husband.
8Arcane
Known/Learned

Learned – The Husband appears to have buried his Wife, stating “you're safe now, home, soil” and “Home is right here”.
9Arcane
Known/Learned

Hunter, Heart & Home – appears to be the Husband/Father experiencing the birth of his daughter - “into blue eyes, born in this room” and “Home is right here, my love...”. It also speaks to the daughter/baby mending his mental wounds - “The broken is mended, the unfinished whole” -as he holds his daughter “skin to skin”. The baby ultimately healing the Father - “bleeding the fight from me”.
10Arcane
Known/Learned

Little Burden – This song supports that the Wife/Mother died during childbirth. The father holds his daughter “in new sheets” and states “I see her in you”. It appears that the bond between the two is enhanced by the mother's passing - “Just you and me, little one”. The Father pleads for his daughter to “don't grow just yet...stay like this, stay right here, stay with me”. The Father pledges that “I will, with these hands, will build a home”.
11Arcane
Known/Learned

Impatience and Slow Poison – Time passes and the Husband/Father appears to fade following his Wife's passing - “It can't be wrong to fade like this”. But longs to “stay here”.
12Arcane
Known/Learned

Known – The Father speaks to his daughter - “Don't forget that you will always be my little girl, my sweetheart”. “My sweetheart still, when I'm Gone”. He reminds of his dead wife's love with “like deep ocean will mirror the stars...she loved you and I miss her too”.
13Arcane
Known/Learned

Nightingale's Weave – This song appears to be from the perspective of the Daughter. The Daughter pleads to her father to “just quietly go please”, seeing that the Father is “holding onto this moment” and “trying to stay”. Although she had “wished for one more day”, she states “let it be now” and that she “never wanted any more than you proved me”.
14Arcane
Known/Learned

Eyes for the Change – The Father realizes he is “on the final page” and that “this text has nothing left”. His “eyes are screaming out my age”. But today, he is strong.
15Arcane
Known/Learned

Keeping Stone: Water Awake – The Husband/Father appears to be speaking to the departed Wife/Mother, as he is passing away. He informs her regarding their daughter - “know that she'll go far”.
16Arcane
Known/Learned

Promise Pt. 1 – After traveling far and waiting long (“waiting by the window” of perhaps the astral plane), Husband and Wife are reunited - “finally he held her close...and did not let go”. It appears that the Wife, while “cradled in his arms”, breathes her final breath and “she lay still”. This song loops back to the beginning of the CD Known.
