31 Concept Albums for May - Day One

Over the next 31 days of May, I plan to revisit 31 select hard rock or metal concept albums. These are the concept albums that have moved me the most over the last 25 years (give or take). Or conversely, they are concept albums that I have long desired to expend further study upon. Some of these albums will be quite familiar to most of you – others maybe less so. Below, I aim to provide a high level summary of “my take” or interpretation on their content. Specifically on the key messages I feel are being expressed and received (by myself) through these works of art. Little to no comment will be made on the music itself - there are plenty of reviews for that. I am leaving the ability to comment - feel free to chime in with your thoughts. But note, that I am not making this list for you, Sputnikers. More for me to record my voyage through these concept albums during these “Strange Days” of Covid 19. Bon Voyage.
1Suns of the Tundra
Bones of Brave Ships [Vinyl]

This album presents the soundtrack to the epic film South, a story of the ill-fated expedition by Ernest Shackleford to the Antarctic between 1914 and 1916. Although ill-fated, this film and soundtrack highlight the calm and resolve of Shackleford and his 28-man crew in face of pending death.
2Suns of the Tundra
Bones of Brave Ships [Vinyl]

The beginning of this work describes the pushing forward of Shackleford and his crew through ocean and ice, breaking into the ice as far as possible with the bow of their ship (the Endurance). Unfortunately, the ship becomes immobilized in the ice as winter approaches and temperature decreases. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeN5qmlK7Rs
3Suns of the Tundra
Bones of Brave Ships [Vinyl]

Upon the ship becoming immobilized in the ice, the crew find mundane ways to keep themselves occupied. For example, playing with Man's best friend, the many sled dogs brought on the expedition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SACn7QGlMGI
4Suns of the Tundra
Bones of Brave Ships [Vinyl]

The ship capsizes due to the movement and strength of the ice, leaving the crew marooned in tents on the ice and struggling to survive. Shackleford makes a monumental 800 mile trek over open ocean and a 30 mile hike over frozen mountains to obtain help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJPuZdBlBCM
5Suns of the Tundra
Bones of Brave Ships [Vinyl]

For 4.5 months, the crew awaits on Elephant Island for rescue, during the while recording the playful nature of seals, penguins, and other wildlife. Ultimately being rescued and returning to civilization as heroes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoJlOSuUglI
