Had my first deep dive into these guys' discography and diverged from the Sputnik consensus in a few ways, please argue with me. | 6 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Option Paralysis
This seems to be a favorite around here, and on the surface I can see why. Obviously, "Farewell, Mona Lisa" is one of their masterpieces, and there are a few other highlights as well. But this also contains the most forgettable material the band ever produced. I don't know if it'll ever fully click with me.
Favorite tracks: Farewell Mona Lisa, Gold Teeth on a Bum, Parasitic Twins | 5 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity
I admire what this record is doing even if it doesn't always gel with me personally. It's a classic for a reason. Plus, "43% Burnt" was the first Dillinger track I ever heard and it's still among my favorites, so extra points there.
Favorite tracks: Sugar Coated Sour, 43% Burnt, Variations on a Cocktail Dress | 4 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan One of Us Is the Killer
I don't think it's a hot take to call this their most normie album. Greg's vocals especially are hookier than ever. A lot of great songs here but also the first (and only) time it feels like they might be treading water.
Favorite tracks: Prancer, One of Us Is the Killer, Hero of the Soviet Union | 3 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine
If I ever want to introduce someone to Dillinger, this is the album I'll point to. A perfect mix of their debut's jagged insanity and the polished hardcore soundscapes that grew to define them.
Favorite tracks: Highway Robbery, Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants, Unretrofied | 2 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation
What a stellar way to cap things off, and I don't even have the sentimental attachment that longtime Dillinger fans might. Very all-encompassing, touching on just about every genre they ever dabbled in, and there are still some curveballs thrown in. To sweeten the pot, the closing track is among their best ever. This is how you go out swinging.
Favorite tracks: Limerent Death, Surrogate, Dissociation | 1 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Ire Works
How this is their lowest-rated album here is beyond me. I get that the experimental tracks might feel a little underdeveloped but they're so eclectic and engaging that the record flows smooth as butter. And the rest is classic Dillinger with a few twists. The final trifecta might be the best three-track run in their entire catalog. Love it.
Favorite tracks: When Acting as a Wave, Milk Lizard, Mouth of Ghosts | |
