Symbolic

The Wolf Of Wall Street - Scorsese, kicking ass for four damn decades in a row! Although this doesn't reach the heights of his 70s-90s career, this is still an unbelievable achievement. Only this man can make a 3 hour epic about some of the most abhorrent bastards of our time and make us laugh throughout the entire runtime. Also, shoutout to the Irishman.
9Death
Individual Thought Patterns

Mandy - It's basically a heavy metal movie with coked out Nicholas Cage battling junkie Cenobites in his underwear with a rainbow lens. What the fuck is not to love here?
8Death
Human

The Nice Guys - The wit. THE WITTTT. But for real, this dialogue is out f this world. One has to wonder what happened with The Predator.
7Death
Spiritual Healing

Mad Max: Fury Road - A flawless action film from an amazing filmmaker. The cinematography, massive practical action set pieces, character designs, the color pallet and the general dystopian atmosphere just fucking kicked my ass all over the place. This and John Wick are the two best drinking games of the decade.

Leprosy

I, Tonya - Ok, fine, the style is a total Scorsese rip off. But also, I don't care. This is one of the few movies I have seen in my lifetime that has made me rethink an entire historic event that I had already made my mind up on. I found myself reading the actual event, watching real life interviews on YouTube, and talking to people about this for the next month or two after seeing this movie. That should tell you how much of an impact this film had on me.
5Death
Scream Bloody Gore

Before Midnight - I do think that the previous two films are necessary viewing to totally understand why this one is so impressive, but I would argue that these two leads are some of the deepest characters in the entire romance genre. These are more like plays than movies, so it is only for a certain type of audience, but it is incredibly rewarding if it is your type of thing (even when it is devastating).

Marrow of the Spirit

Lighthouse - I still don't think that I fully comprehend all of what Eggers meant for me to take in with this film, but that is what makes it so fascinating. This is one of those movies that is so haunting even when you don't know exactly what is happening. Two of the best performances I have seen all decade, combined with filming techniques (the frame rate, the black and white, etc) that bring me back to an era of filmmaking I wasn't alive to appreciate.
3Agalloch
Ashes Against the Grain

Hereditary - This is really tied with The Witch for me, but for completely different reasons. It's a shame that some people I know brush this off as just a horror film because outside of Six Feet Under, this film captures the horror of grief in a way that is uncompromisingly pure and honest, without ever going totally over the top (like some of Lars Von Trier's lesser films). That...and the horror is awesome. This one deserves all of the praise.
2Agalloch
The Mantle

The Witch - I hope people don't overlook how impressive the authenticity of the dialogue is for the time period, but it is truly astounding. All of the actors (kid actors included) deliver these lines with a naturalness that is truly astonishing. The slow, deliberate pace combined with the bleak atmosphere and appropriately vague lore make this film feel more like a classic short story than a movie in 2019. One of my favorite horror movies of all time.
1Agalloch
Pale Folklore

Moonlight - This is one of the most masterful films I have ever seen. The most realistic acting I have seen since The Wire and more emotional purity than any film I have seen this decade. Seriously, this is the only film to make me tear up in an open theater, and not from some Oscar bait bullshit. I've only seen this film about once a year since it has come out, but each time I view it gets richer.
