Jiggly's Album of the Year List

Pretty self-explanatory, I think. Mini reviews for the top top albums asap.
1Tyler, the Creator
IGOR

IGOR is a beast of a record. A beast made up of beautiful and catchy musicality, partnered with jealousy, toxic love triangles and ultimately the break up. Tyler embodied this perfectly through the lyrics of this record, while still handing us his most beautiful record up to date. IGOR blends fuzzed out hip-hop production with soul, pop and r&b frame works. This is Tyler's least rap-centric album. He still raps on tracks like 'I THINK' and 'NEW MAGIC WAND' and 'WHAT'S GOOD', but you can tell it wasn't his main goal with this record. He wanted to bring it back to the 60's soul while still keeping in touch modern day pop, rap and r&b sensibilities. Tracks like 'EARFQUAKE', 'RUNNING OUT OF TIME', and 'A BOY IS A GUN' embody these notions perfectly with they're colorful synths, layered piano melodies, paired up with thick, layered and booming 808 beats. Where Tyler really sticks the landing is with 'GONE GONE, THANK YOU' which is a just a gorgeous two parter. Idk I love this record.
2Erika Casier
Essentials

Essentials is a beautiful record that appreciates its 90s/00s influences and makes something truly special out of the love for these styles of music. Trip-Hop, Downtempo and R&B; all these are core ingredients to the sounds of this record on the production side and instrumental side, but Erika's vocals really excell this release to heavenly heights. Her vocals have this faint, calming and lucid presence on these instrumentals. This is all present from the opener THE FLOW was the best way to open this record up. It's like she's taking footsteps ontop of a physically manifested dreamscape. It's gorgeous, lush, densely layered and enveloping on a level that most pop artists can't even begin to comprehend. This track really sets the precedent for the rest of the tracks. From the poppier DO MY THING to the R&B bliss joint that is RAINY, all these tracks capture your senses in the most beautiful of ways. I know I keep calling this album gorgeous, but that's only because it is.
3Otoboke Beaver
Itekoma Hits

Itekoma Hits is lightning in a bottle. Much like their live presence, Otoboke Beaver's ferocity behind studio walls is unmatched in today's rock scene when it comes to pure, unadulterated punk and hardcore. There's just no other rock band out there doing this sort of thing as good as they are. Don't quote me on that, though. There's most definitely a slew of punk and noise rock outfits that I'm not aware with due to my falling out with the genres and their scenes. Either way, I care not, go listen to Otoboke Beaver.
4オオハシ (Ohashi)
波のはじまり (Nami no Hajimari)

I only found out about this project through a review here on Sputnik and I must say...this is some beautiful stuff. I guess I cheated when listening to this record since I was walking in a park in the summer, in the sunshine no less... Kind of the perfect, serene atmosphere for Nami no Hajimari. This album is a nice mix of psychedelic, soft, parced out rock instrumentals backed up with ambience-setting vocals from time to time. You'll feel like you're flying when listening to this. Not like you're high or manic, more like you've found the calm in the storm that is life. If that makes any shred of sense to you, go listen to this.
5Little Simz
GREY Area

The London rapper has done it. Originally, earlier in the year, GREY Area was my album of the year. This album had captivated me with its pure brand of smokey sampling, fuzzy production and Simbiatu's fun, witty bars. The cartoon and flute samples on 'Offence'. The chorus on 'Boss', followed by Simbiatu just rapping her brains out. It's so good. 'Selfish' is extremely ear-wormy due to its catchy as "I'm so selfish" refrain (sung by Cleo Sol) that is backed up by a beautifully subtle piano sample. These are just the first few tracks. They set the precedent for the rest of the record. GREY Area is a classic for the books.
6Andy Stott
It Should Be Us

Mr. Stott really came through and surprised me with this one. I mean, I loved Luxury Problems back in the day when it came out but I had not tried his other stuff nearly as much. 'It Should Be Us' is a beautiful trip inside the realms of Andy's hazed out brand of techno and dub-induced ambient music. It's gorgeous. It's as if the album is the five-legged zebra on the cover. I have no idea how I was going to finish that last sentence, I just wanted to include the zebra. Either way, the production's great. It feels more grounded than his other work and that gives it a more tangible feel overall, I think. His best work to date, honestly.
7Shinichiro Yokota
I Know You Like It

Tokyo born Shinichiro Yokota really came through with the best kind house music out there, japanese house music. Bold statement, I know. I've been into Soichi Terada for the last couple of years and I grew up playing Ape Escape since I'm a PSX baby, so needless to say, this kind of music fuels my childhood nostalgia. Shinichiro brings his own spin to it, but the japanese framework is still very much ingrained in his beats. Listen to Time Traveling if you need a reference. I love this kind of music and I will be keeping tabs on Shinichiro's music for many years to come.
8State Faults
Clairvoyant

Clairvoyant was the first post-hardcore record I had been able to get into in a long time. I had grown out of the genre in many respects and moved on to more hip-hop and electronic-centric albums, but this record was too gorgeous to put down. I listened to it like five times in a row the first time I found out about it. Something just took me in and it wouldn't let go. The beautiful and dreamy emo-styled guitars, the captivating harsh vocals, the spoken word passages, it all adds up to be the best that I've heard in years from this genre.
9clipping.
There Existed an Addiction to Blood

Daveed and gang have done it again. Clipping has done a great job in recent years of creating a great concept for a record and sticking to it without it compromising the music at all. Their last album focused on space slavery and...a love story? Anywho, won't spoil that album for anyone who's yet to listen to it. This one focuses on horror, paranoia, the terror of life fused with the ever-living aesthetic that is b-level horror movies. It's a fantastic concept. My partner was intensely hype about this project and needless to say the final results are as heavy, noisy and destructively gorgeous as I thought.
10Car Seat Headrest
Commit Yourself Completely

Car Seat Headrest are a band I'd been meaning to get into for a while. I guess I was destined to this year, one way or another. A year comprised of psychotic breaks, manic episodes and psychiatric drugs to help put all that into check. That's why I had to take a break. Honestly, I'm still taking said break. It's been a shit year. Will Toledo's music has kind of kept me afloat in many respects, though. Commit Yourself Completely is a phrase I tried putting into practice this year. I suggest you do the same if you're going through shit. It's okay. Anywho, best live album this year.
