| I'm Going 1 Month Without Music | 1 | | Mathias Grassow Calibration
I don't have many vices in my life. I don't watch TV/Netflix, go to the movies often. Coffee and music are my biggest escapes, by an unfathomable margin. For October, I plan on not *actively* listening to music for the whole month. Basically giving Spotify a free month, on me. | 2 | | Celer Para
For years now, once a month I do an all-encompassing "fast" (fusatsu), which includes all forms of entertainment. So I have experience going through a day without music. Those days I am much more focused and calm. It isn't always easy, but it helps me appreciate music the next day. I'm interested in seeing what a whole month does, kinda like an experiment. Will I lose my mind? Will I become less empathetic? Will I come back with a full, new appreciation for my favorite albums I've worn out so long ago? | 3 | | Lustmord The Place Where The Black Stars Hang
A couple of my friends are giving up a vice for October as well; one coffee, another fast-food, another drinking. These are all much more reasonable than my decision. But I'm excited to do something most other people wouldn't. | 4 | | Chubby Wolf Ornitheology
HOWEVER, I *know* I'm going to be in situations where I'll need a pair of headphones on to tune out chatter while I'm studying. So, I come to you all sputnik, to recommend me 1 long drone/ambient that's super bare-bones. I'll choose 1 album - and this 1 album only - to use to block out noise when I really need it in October. A glass-case, "In Case of Emergency." Something like these albums on this list. Chubby Wolf is probably my biggest contender rn. Ty'all | |

09.25.19 | I just spent a week without music and it definitely didn't have any positive effects. The idea is good but I think you are punishing yourself without a reason. Music is not a vice comparable to smoking, alcohol or gambling. | keza
09.25.19 | Here's my take on this. Over-consuming many things is bad. Over-consuming things that genuinely add value to your life and aren't harmful? I say why not.
Does music add value to your life? Does it cause harm? If yes/no respectively, then why limit that?
Also the world is fuckin ending, may as well spend our time here doing things that make us happy and that are good far all parties - e.g. m u s i c | keza

@ brainmelter wow that is the worst piece of music I've ever heard genuinely
@ Sandwhichbubble, 3 hour ambient fan videos is a good idea; thank you for the encouragement
@ whole master of domain suggestion, been there done that. But if y'all want me to tack that on to this I will. I haven't read a fictional book in 3+ years, so I'm picking up reading fiction to supplement my lack of music engagement & my peers are doing other supplemental positive behaviors to replace their "vice" (guess I used that term too strongly in this post). I'm chuckling this thread became that topic.
@SpaceMan, hell yeah
@Motoko, all "passive" forms of listening to music I'm 100% allowing (grocery store, coffee shops, elevators, peers' cars, etc.). I'm doing this to explore my relationship with music, not disturb others' with my kooky behaviors.
@Dewinged, I genuinely appreciate your response.
Again, vice might have been a strong word. I use music a lot to escape, to run away from my thoughts. Most days I have the incapability to just sit in a car and be alone with myself and my thoughts. This is a month of listening to all my thoughts; to experimenting and seeing just how deep the spiritual connection to music is for me.
@Pots, I plan on using this site a few times to keep up with y'alls response to releases (Danny Brown, Swans, FKA Twigs I'm hype for).
Maybe the severity of this was overstated? Again, passively (at parties, grocery store, etc) music will still be around me. It's basically a month of handing my mp3 over to fate. I still plan all my social engagements being the same. I'll hear music. The difference will be not having music while; working out, driving (these two are where I listen to music most), & attempting to study.

This actually makes some sense. For a day or two I could totally see myself doing that, just to check and see what it would do to my state of mind. A month feels excessive to the point of chastisement though, but hey, power to you. Let us know how it goes. Would actually be a day by day blog I'd be interested in reading. | nightbringer
09.25.19 | While I don't think music is a vice as such, it is something we can depend on emotionally. And that's not bad per se, but there can well-being reasons or spiritual reasons for some people to practice temporarily not depending on music. Personally, every week or so I need to take at least a day off from music listening. I find that by cramming music into every nook and cranny of my ordinary life, I end up disconnected from my thoughts and body. My anxiety tends to creep up. I need some silence and some space to reconnect. In the past I've fasted for a week or longer too. It's hard but also brings a lot of mental clarity. For me anyway. So all the best with this, for some people it's a good idea. | DoofDoof
09.25.19 | There's been times I've decided not to listen to any new music for a couple of months...but to listen to no music at all?
I just don't know dude... | Tb1114
09.25.19 | I appreciate these comments. Thank you
@ Scheumke Idk about a day by day blog, I don't wanna saturate my kook content, but I'll do a week-by-week update if I'm miserable enough. Will certainly make an update after the month is over.
@nightbringer, your comment sums up my feelings well. I use music in a lot of ways that keeps my thoughts and body disconnected. I'm really curious to see what happens this upcoming month, but mostly what I come out with after the fact. |
