| TWENEEK19: Q2 Films
Haven't seen as many as I'd liked so far this summer thanks to lots of finals/sets eating up my time. Hopefully next quarter will be different. | 9 | | Black Sabbath Born Again
Dead Don’t Die: 2/5
A suffocating sense of irony and ego pervade the entire film, its lone amusing moments deadened by the enveloping pointlessness and unoriginality of the whole experience. It’s a film whose point is to have no point, but it's certainly not the first to try this and desperately fail. | 8 | | Bjork Volta
Dark Phoenix: 2.5/5
While the first act has a refreshing earnestness and fizz to it, it’s quickly let down by an increasing lack of understanding of its own characters and a horribly missed opportunity with its antagonist. | 7 | | Avenged Sevenfold Sounding the Seventh Trumpet
Godzilla: King of Monsters: 3/5
Achieving an uneasy balance between its human drama and impressive scope, Godzilla nevertheless topples itself over due to some major pacing issues in the 2nd act. | 6 | | Foo Fighters Sonic Highways
Detective Pikachu: 3.5/5
A pretty ridiculous but entertaining spectacle with a surprising emotional core and plenty of fun visuals to boot. If you sit back and don’t take it seriously, you should have some serious fun with this thing. | 5 | | Cage The Elephant Social Cues
Shazam: 3.5/5
Not gonna lie, I was pretty drunk when I saw this one but what I did comprehend I had a great time with. There was some straight up dumb shit here, but overall it was an enjoyable ride through and through. | 4 | | Brand New Your Favorite Weapon
John Wick Chapter 3: 3.5/5
The John Wick franchise takes a major hit thanks to an overabundance of tongue-in-cheek self-awareness, adding an element of humor that throws off the balance on top of some repetitive action scenes. We always knew how ridiculous the action was, we never needed the characters to as well. Still, it’s one of the best and best-looking action franchise out there today. | 3 | | Elton John Madman Across the Water
Rocketman: 3.5/5
While the musical elements lacked a certain punch every once in a while, Rocketman (and Taron Egerton) did an excellent job of investing me in the story. While it took me a while to get into it, Rocketman had plenty of weird, giddy energy to it to make it more than just work. | 2 | | Elder (USA-MA) Reflections of a Floating World
I Am Mother: 4/5
A surprising and impressive work of science fiction that might not have been the most original piece ever made, but it weaves through twists and turns to provide an engaging and thought-provoking story of humanity and our robot caretakers. | 1 | | Coldplay Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
Avengers: Endgame: 5/5
What can I say? It’s the end of an era, it’s a massive cultural moment, and one of the most satisfying endings ever put to screen. | |

07.01.19 | Yo this year has been rough | neekafat
07.02.19 | Toy Story 4 was an easy 4/5 | neekafat
07.06.19 | Far From Home: 3.5/5 | Rowan5215
07.06.19 | Far From Home was lit, absolutely loved Gylenhaal (we all knew he was gonna be good but not THAT good) and that first altered reality sequence is the tightest shit I've seen all year | neekafat
07.06.19 | I just hate how much they leaned on Iron Man throughout the film, it felt like only half a spiderman film
But yes Gyllenhaal ruled, I loved what they did with Mysterio | robertsona
07.06.19 | Do you like Jarmusch (writer/director of DEAD DON'T DIE) generally? He always has this cool sense of irony but it usually feels kind and giving to me...but certain films don't work. Need to see DEAD, my friend did costume design on it | neekafat
07.07.19 | I actually haven't seen any of his other films! I really wanted to see Paterson but this really left a bad taste in my mouth
And that's rad, I'm in the industry too! | Rowan5215
07.15.19 | Toy Story 4 fucking ruled way more than it should've | neekafat
07.15.19 | I very much enjoyed it. Spiderman on the other hand was a bit of a disappointment... | Chortles
07.15.19 | it has been a slow year indeed. The Last Black Man in San Francisco was stunning though, easily my favorite of the year so far
I haven't seen Jarmusch's new film (it looks... ok?) but Paterson is so wonderful and kind, if you were interested in it before but are deterred now I'd still say to give it a go | Papa Universe
07.15.19 | I have not yet seen any 2019 films. It feels weird... and not right. | Pikazilla
07.15.19 | Avengers Endgame was nowhere near as good as the previous one. Very disappointing. And full of plot holes. I Am Mother was very predictable. | neekafat
07.15.19 | "The Last Black Man in San Francisco" meant to see that but I missed my opportunity!
Papa it is very wrong indeed...
@Pika strong disagree with the first point, and for a mid-budget sci-fi film the plot was really good |
