Dream Theater Ranked
i decide to subject myself to potential torture and do a discography run. here are my thoughts, please feel free to attack me for them. worst to best |
1 | | Dream Theater The Astonishing
1/5
i can't do this. |
2 | | Dream Theater When Dream and Day Unite
2.5/5
i appreciate the bits of technicality that some tracks bring to the table but overall this is a very basic late 80s metal album all in all. i dont really think any track stands out, it just all melds together for me. it's like a blur. |
3 | | Dream Theater Falling into Infinity
3/5
incredibly radio friendly and while there is nothing wrong with that, it has extremely predictable songs which take up most of the record. only a few are really stand out and stick with me really well.
favorite tracks: Peruvian skies, hell's kitchen, lines in the sand |
4 | | Dream Theater Dream Theater
3/5
lyrically this album leaves so much to be desired, musically it's about what i expect from dream theater (though none of the songs aside from the final track are as long as they usually are) but that's nothing to really complain about. labrie's voice is a little bit lacking on this too and i'm not sure why.
favorite tracks: enigma machine, behind the veil, surrender to reason |
5 | | Dream Theater Distance Over Time
3/5
overall basically what i expected from this current era of dream theater, a breath of relief after the garbage fire that was the astonishing. honestly just feels like a better version of their self titled with a little more substance.
favorite tracks: untethered angel, paralyzed, at wit's end |
6 | | Dream Theater Systematic Chaos
3.5/5
definitely feels boring at points but the highlights of this album are fucking phenomenal, specifically near the ending of the record of course. i dont like repentance at all though
favorite tracks: the dark eternal night, prophets of war, the ministry of lost souls |
7 | | Dream Theater Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
3.5/5
definitely an incredibly strong album, i love labrie's vocals on this. it hits a few snags along the way but it keeps a steady rhythm. intro track is fucking awesome.
favorite tracks: the glass prison, I. overture, solitary shell |
8 | | Dream Theater Awake
4/5
feels like a somewhat less linear version of Images and Words, but also a direct extension with a few new ideas and some songs hit a little heavier. overall some of the songs like The Silent Man kind of lost my interest, while The Mirror and others kept my attention pretty well. not bad at all
favorite tracks: innocence faded, the mirror, lie |
9 | | Dream Theater Octavarium
4/5
ironically more accessible in the first half before going full dream theater in the second, feels a little uneven in that regard but it manages to save itself by just having in general really great tracks. i love how epic some feel, especially the outro. sacrificed sons is also awesome but drags a little.
favorite tracks: i walk beside you, panic attack, octavarium |
10 | | Dream Theater A Dramatic Turn of Events
4/5
a very epic and almost theatrical sounding album, kept me incredibly hooked throughout it. definitely up there as one of their best albums for me at least. the ballads are especially gorgeous
favorite tracks: outcry, far from heaven, beneath the surface |
11 | | Dream Theater Images and Words
4.5/5
very beautiful album with quite a few soft spots, though fast paced songs made this album shine for me the most. i find this album a bit too evenly spaced because it just makes me want heavier songs, i find some of the softer songs a little boring but other than that an incredibly solid record.
favorite tracks: pull me under, metropolis, wait for sleep |
12 | | Dream Theater Black Clouds and Silver Linings
4.5/5
fucking insanity. i absolutely love how crazy this album sounds. wither didn't hit me too hard until the second half of the track which is absolutely wonderful. the best of times doesn't really interest me much at all, but other than that, this record kept me hooked the entire time.
favorite tracks: a rite of passage, the shattered fortress, the count of tuscany |
13 | | Dream Theater Train of Thought
4.5/5
heavier than usual so i'm immediately a sucker for this album. more moody than usual too, with labrie's vocals basically reaching their peak for me personally. the musicianship also blows my fucking mind. this album almost ties with Images and Words for me.
favorite tracks: this dying soul, endless sacrifice, honor thy father, in the name of god |
14 | | Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
5/5
a story that weaves itself together seamlessly with songs that have time to breathe no matter how long they go on, constantly breathing life into the concept. the vocals shine here and so does the musician ship. dream theater at their best.
favorite tracks: all of them |
