03.01.19 | "Black Canyon"
Vocals are very typical of a ballad, as is the guitar. This isn't doing anything for me. It's very "radio-friendly" though. In a "my mom would like this" kinda way. Just better than average. The lyrics are probably deep, but I usually don't pay attention to lyrics until the music grabs me...

03.01.19 | Black Canyon - Pedro the Lion
I listened through half of this album (not this song) when it came out but wasn't grabbed. I like this one a little more. Good guitar tones but I don't feel it gathered the momentum it needed from a storytelling perspective and the tongue-in-cheek chorus lyrics aren't winning for me. Pretty solid regardless 3.5/5 |

03.02.19 | Because the story here is super heavy and and dark and totally unexpected for people who only know Dancing Queen:
ABBA - The Visitors
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhr6tUE32YA
The “Visitors” reportedly represent the various state police in communist countries at the time of writing. Wikipedia: ''The official stated theme is a protest against the mistreatment of political dissidents in the Soviet Union at the time, as ABBA seemed to put political issues into their lyrics in the final days of the group. Ulvaeus has stated that at the time of release he preferred that the song should have a sense of mystery so did not explain the exact meaning.'' |

03.06.19 | "Nocturn"
This is a masterpiece. I'm too lazy to write a new description since I already did it for my "ranking Kate Bush's Studio discography," but it came in#17/100 with the top 24 all getting perfect scores, there's the description:
"I feel like this song is has such a familiar melody, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. The bass, strings and piano are great like usual. The song seems to be about escaping the city to enjoy nature and how beautiful and relaxing that can be. Everyone is asleep except for her and her husband, who are sharing an intimate night outing at the beach. I feel like this is more fact than fiction and that Kate and Dan actually did this at one point. Kate’s later love songs seem especially genuine as though she’s super happily married. Amazing song."
5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
03.06.19 | "Laika"
So, it's folk. With, no those vocals are kinda emo. Eh. I like how his live album has a picture of him holding In the Aeroplane of the Sea. Really makes him stand out. Not many artists just have an image of them holding an album for their album cover. This is bland and trying too hard.

03.07.19 | Aqua Beauty - I definitely caught onto the mood of this, wasn't blown away by the guitar tone and character of the performance but the musicianship and melodies/chords were on point 3.7/5
Railroad Bill - Fun fun stuff but I feel like it peaked a little early. Got minorly grating towards the second half 3.2/5
Nickee Coco - Been meaning to check Of Montreal more (only track I knew before this was Lysergic Bliss), and I have pretty mixed feelings after this. The overture and vocals were not my thing at all, but aptly enough the story made this for me. Very cute wholesome stuff, a lot of images that made me double-take to be sure this wasn't the Flaming Lips. Have still got a slight glow of general cuteness from this, so going to score it now before it wears off at 3.5/5 |

03.11.19 | I got a second rec, that adheres to the story theme by a band called Telethon off the album "The Grand Spontanean"
Telethon-Stillwave (feat. Chris Farren).
This song is set in apocalyptic end times, due to someone discovering "the page at the end of the Internet", which you hear in earlier songs, and the writer trying to escape to the safe-haven of Disney Land. It starts off reflecting on humanity and observing their reactions to their final days, before reaching the gates of Disney. This is where Chris Farren steps in, to explain what is going on there.
The whole album is one big story, but this song alone is a stand out and well worth your time.

03.16.19 | "Ultimo Metro"
Good guitar riff so far. Also, of course Brazilians know how to bring it, have you even looked into tropicalia? It's amazing. Not that this is tropicalia at all, but still. It's a simple fun rock song and I can get down to it. The drums especially caught my ear.
3.8/5
"Izon-Shou / I Am An Addict"
So far airy Japanese vocals and water droplet instrumentation accompanied by floaty guitar. Wait the pick up is kinda cool. Her voice is kinda nasal, but I don't mind it too much. If anything it allows her vocals to stand out. Do you know who she reminds me of? Alanis Morisette... like a lot. Japanese Alanis Morisette. Now as I approach the ending the piano is pretty and the guitar has gotten extra noisy as it solos. Like it's a built-up climax. It makes sense that this is the album's closer actually. Not bad.
3.7/5
"Mr. Tanner"
This... it sounds like David Bowie's debut. I can't take this seriously. Okay, that cello is gorgeous though, a huge saving grace from how hard this is to take seriously. Imagine if Bowie never did drugs? What if he turned into this... what a scary alternative universe. Seriously, the early Bowie-ness of this song is uncanny. +.2 for cello awesomeness.

03.18.19 | sorry trif i never pay attention to lyrics so i really have no idea (about story-songs).. if something pops up i'll be sure to add it here |
Trifolium
03.18.19 | No prob, every rec is goooood and welcome! I never pay attention to those things either actually, haha! |
SlothcoreSam
03.19.19 | 16. Kafuusek: 2.8, pretty generic sounding vocals, the guitars are late 80ish but not bad. Not my scene.
17. Dinah-Moe Humm: 3.3, this made me feel dirty. musically it was like a more technical and polished porn soundtrack. The vocals were creepy at times, and the flow was not quite there.

03.19.19 | I see ars rec for Nicki Coco and I almost want to join this mess |
ArsMoriendi
03.19.19 | Do it! |
budgie
03.19.19 | ok,
Lillet Blanc - Now and Yours
https://lilletblanc.bandcamp.com/album/lillet-blanc
it's the 3rd track.
feel-good cutsie dream-pop from brooklyn with a sprinkling of doo-wop and a smattering of surf
fuckin' underrated |
keza
03.19.19 | budgie I'm curious, do you know/like the band budgie? cos budgie are great |
budgie
03.19.19 | yeah picked my name from them |
keza
03.19.19 | hell yes. Can we please get In the Grip of the Tyrefitter's Hand by Budgie on this list? such an underrated and influential classic, you can almost hear Metallica's origins in the drums and riffs and structure. |
budgie
03.19.19 | fuuuuuck yeah that track bangs! |
Trifolium
03.19.19 | Niiiice! Thanks for the recs, now we can go on with our big adventure! |
JohnnyoftheWell
03.20.19 | Will catchup fully in the soon, been a busy busy time
14. Mr. Tanner - very corny and not particularly eloquent, but I found this surprisingly touching in its simplicity. Am clearly going soft, but it gets a 3.5
15. Big City Lover - not quite my jam tbh (prefer trip hop for noir over chillout), but I dig this for what it is I guess 3.3/5 |
SlothcoreSam
03.20.19 | Was going to listen to number 19, but it aint here yet? I'll be patient and just drink some beer.
I'm listening to an Aussie band called Amyl and the Sniffers, great Aussie garage Punk, sounds and looks like they are from the 80s, check out their song "Some Mutts (Can't be Muzzled).
https://g.co/kgs/FGxFb7
That's my 3rd rec by the way. |
ArsMoriendi
03.20.19 | 19 was rec'd Dylan just didn't update it yet
he's probably busy |
SlothcoreSam
03.20.19 | Fair enough, |
ArsMoriendi
03.20.19 | "Kafuuseki"
Japanese folk rock? It's kinda ominous like it would work in like an action thriller or something. Not amazing, but it certainly works well enough.
3.6/5
"Stillwave"
So it's folk punk... this isn't bad, but it's not really too special. The organ and twinkly pickup is sort of interesting though. WAIT holy shit this is 10 mins? Fuck this genre isn't good enough to make 6 min songs, let alone 10 min ones. +.1 for never being unlistenable.
3.1/5
"Nimrod's Son"
Well, it's not my favorite from Come on Pilgrim, but that's not saying much. EP rules. The screamy indie, punky, folky bizarreness is loveable even if the incest-themed lyrics are super bizarre. Joey Santiago's rarely fails to impress. YOU ARE THE SON ON INCESTUOUS UNION. lol
4.7/5
"Glass Skin"
More Japanese music? But this time is a piano ballad? Ew, that growling. I don't like this at all.
2.4/5 |
ArsMoriendi
03.20.19 | 3rd recs are coming in... so:
"Found a Job" by Talking Heads from their album More Songs About Buildings and Food [post-punk/funk]
A song about a couple who make up their own TV shows to save their relationship.

Papa Universe
03.20.19 | Frank Zappa - Dinah-Moe Humm: I feel like I'm on a 70s porn set. 4
Telethon - Stillwave: A little too long, but fofucksake is this fun at times. 4
Pixies - Nimrod's Son: kinda bland. 2.5
Dixie Chicks - Goodbye Earl: decent lyrics (though questionable morals), but I really do not like her voice. decent melody tho. 3
Dir En Grey - Glass Skin: I was until now only familiar with the harsher Dir En Grey songs, so this was quite a pleasant surprise. 3.5 |
ArsMoriendi
03.20.19 | Oh fuck, I forgot about the Dixie chick one
Fixing that sooon on the doc |
Trifolium
03.20.19 | Ok. Third pick, saddest song ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnuEMdUUrZQ
Nina Simone - Strange Fruit.
Heart-wrenching. I think she's my fave vocalist. |
Dylan620
03.21.19 | Ugh I'm sorry guys, I've had a crap ton of homework to do and then been getting sidetracked whenever on Sput, updating now |
ArsMoriendi
03.24.19 | "Goodbye Earl"
The organ is nice so far. Damn Earl is ugly. Aw, it's about domestic abuse. Her voice and music are mostly boring, but the lyrics have captured my attention completely. This song is way too happy to be about murdering your abuser.
3.5/5
"Now and Yours"
This makes me think of like chillwave with that production. Nothing about this really grabs my ear. The guitar reminds me of "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, but faster and her voice is kind of plain. Background music, but not unpleasant.
2.9/5
"Some Mutts (Can't Be Muzzled)"
Very punky, but predictable. It almost reminds me of post-punk revival stuff like The Strokes, but more female. Much like the last one, this isn't unpleasant, but it also doesn't command my attention at all. Her voice does have personality though.
3.1/5 |
Metalrain
03.25.19 | Nimrod's Son: This was great for what felt like a simple folk/punk song. 3.8
Goodbye Earl: That wasn't half as bad as I expected. Average song made great by those lyrics. 3.3
Now and Yours: Nothing really grabbed me, just some background music to chill out too. 3.0
Some Mutts(Can't Be Muzzled): Some fun punk, but it didn't do much for me. 3.0
Found A Job: Love me some talking heads, especially this album. 4.3

Literally the joke but yes |
Papa Universe
03.25.19 | Lillet Blanc - Now and Yours: 4
Amyl and the Sniffers - Some Mutts: 4
Talking Heads - Found a Job: them classics 5
Nina Simone - Strange Fruit: them classics 5 |
SlothcoreSam
03.25.19 | 19. Nimrods son, 3.1. Good little jam song here
20. Glass skin, 2.5, stadium rock sounding, over produced blah.
21. Goodbye earl, 0.7, shit. Sounds like a ripoff of the offspring's get a job, which was s ripoff Bobby Bloom's "Montego Bay"
22. Now and yours, 3.5, this was a god little jangle pop tune, might check the rest of the album.
24. Found a job, 3.6. Good song, but not my favourite from this band.
25. Strange fruit, 5. Hands down classic. I can't believe Kanye thought he had the right to sample it, at least he introduced the song to a whole new generation.

03.26.19 | We need more people to give 2nd and 3rd recs, I don't wanna do 4ths lol |
neekafat
03.26.19 | Who's doing april? |
SlothcoreSam
03.26.19 | I can do April if you like, i think i got the hang of this thang. Just gotta make sure there are people left wanting to participate. I have a couple ideas for themes, but is it better to run a hard obscure theme, or an open ended one where any thing goes? |
Trifolium
03.26.19 | Yeah we need some recs!
I've been meaning to catch up, maybe tonight... |
Dylan620
03.26.19 | I'll do a 2nd rec for today even though I feel bad because I haven't caught up...
The The - "Out of the Blue (Into the Fire)" [from Infected]
A tale of a lonely man who seeks companionship in a prostitute.

03.26.19 | slap a 4.5 on that The The track right away for me, would you? |

03.27.19 | my second rec: Angel Haze - "Battle Cry (ft. Sia)" (from Angel's album 'Dirty Gold')
Pop / hip-hop, but mostly pop. Not super artsy, definitely not a masterpiece, but really catchy after a few listens. Plus Angel Haze is super nice.

Trifolium
03.30.19 | My fourth rec (is it really?!):
Blof - Omarm Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX4vw_HwBvM
A Dutch classic.
EDIT: Oh, it's from ''Omarm'' |
Trifolium
03.30.19 | 18. Stillwave: Kind of nice! Also a little too longgggg. Very diverse, so it doesn't really get boring, but the beginning is better than the end. 3.1
19. Nimrod's Son: Nice, like it. Won't return to it too often though. 3.1
20. Glass Skin: Wait, didn't these guys scream their guts out always!? Oof, towards the end it became a little too much... 2.4
21. Goodbye Earl: Nice, this is quite cool. 3.1
22. Now And Yours: Lovely vibes. Dreamy and like a summer breeze. 4.0
23. Some Mutts (Can't Be Muzzled): Oooh this is good! Love the oldschool vibe. Fun and energetic. 4.0
24. Found A Job: Hello! Talking Heads, perfect choice. 5.0
26. Out Of The Blue (Into The Fire): Some nice moments, especially instrumentally. The singing is not something I really dig most of the time. 3.8
27. Roy's Tune: Delish on many fronts. Feels comfortably familiar, like you've known it forever. 4.2
28. Battle Cry: It's alright. A bit too streamlined, but fine. 3.1

Papa Universe
03.30.19 | okay, Sloth has April, Trif has May |

03.30.19 | Haha! I wasn't necessarily fishing for that! But if I have to I'll take it! |
ArsMoriendi
03.30.19 | "Strange Fruit"
Well, now people are just picking ones everyone is going to give high scores due it to be hailed as a long time classic. That being said, Nina's voice is unique and holds more passionate than like anyone ever as she sings a classic 30s poem.
4.4/5
"Out of the Blue (Into the Fire)"
So this is from Doof's favorite album I believe. Man, this is cheesy 80s new wave, isn't it? It's a slight bit weirder, but not enough to really grab me. OH NO NOT A FEMALE BACKUP DOING SOMETHING GENERIC NOOOOOO. I'm sorry, this is a little too lame man.
2.4/5 |
ArsMoriendi
03.30.19 | "Roy's Tune"
What's with you guys and post-punk and soft indie rock? Both have great stuff, but it's so popular with this group. The vocals sound a little off (unintentionally so,) but the guitar is pleasant enough. Honestly, this is like 90s U2 with different vocals to my ears.
2.9/5
"Battle Cry"
A slow Sia ballad that turns into hip hop hmmm. Yeah, this isn't anything special, but it isn't unlistenable either. Top 40 pop, or at least it's attempting to be. +.1 for not using trap snares.
2.6/5
"Omarm Me"
Well, this is emotional, and there's organ hmmm. His accent is pretty, albeit kinda guttural when he makes that hard C sound. I like the organ, but the rest isn't doing anything for me. Wait, the pickup is kinda cool and very 90s.
3/5 |
ArsMoriendi
03.30.19 | Today doesn't even have a song... ugh Trif did a 4th rec, so fuck it:
"Love's Secret Domain" by Coil from their album Love's Secret Domain
It's the kinda gay sex song that will make you feel gross hearing it lol, but it's also brilliant. Coil insisted that all of the Thai male strippers in the video were IDed to be 18 or older.

03.30.19 | SotD won't die as long as I live... which means so long, SotD. |
Trifolium
03.30.19 | Haha! Yeah, we could all do 4th recs and all, but recs from others would be cooler of course!
Nice to see you kinda digged Blof Ars! It's very cheesy very 90s emotional radio rock with plenty heart, haha! |
SlothcoreSam
03.31.19 | I'll post next month's SotD tomorrow, if we all haven't died.
Out of the Blue, 3.4. Probably would have been a great song at the time, it takes a little while to get going, then starts to deliver the goods.
Roy's Tune, 4.8. I've been listening to these guys for the past couple of months. I love this song as well as "Big". Their album is gonna be killer, release 12th April, thanks Papa, for getting this band noticed. |
SlothcoreSam
03.31.19 | Angel Haze- 2.6 It is very top 40ish. Decent lyrics, and good delivery, shame about the poppy chorus, and market ready production.
Omarm me- 3.7 I'm glad the lyrics are up so i can sing along. He has a great voice. It kinda sounds like another stadium rock anthem.
Loves secret Domain- 1.3 If the police come around cus i watched this I will use the Sput defence in court. Fuck this is uncomfortable. |
ArsMoriendi
03.31.19 | 1.3? Booooooooo |

03.31.19 | "Eye"
What am I thanking you for? It's just simple post-rock type stuff. Oh, sweet poppy vocals. Pretty strings, but there's nothing about this that stands out to me honestly. I'll give it a decent score because it's certainly pleasant though. Kinda gutless though. Like a carbon copy of other dream poppy/post-rocky stuff.
3.4/5 |

04.01.19 | I regret stepping up to do this - with how much I had going on in March (and still do in April), I should've known that I wouldn't be able to commit to maintaining this :(

04.02.19 | just quick final rating dump:
Angel Haze ft. Sia - Battle Cry: oh damn bloody fuck yes this slaps like all hell. 4.5
Blof - Omarm Me: pretty safe and not necessarily all that exciting, but it harmonises nicely. 3
Coil - Love's Secret Domain: NIN turns even more gay. 4
I Mean Us - Eye: somewhat banal dream pop that I tried to listen over again a few times, but I ended up only truly liking the latter half. 3.5 |
