02.20.19 | If only it were on the site I’d add it. Legendary comeback album for sure |
StrikeOfTheBeast
02.20.19 | 14 is rather underappreciated by DM purists. It's a magnificent album imo.
List rules. |

TheSonomaDude
02.20.19 | 9 for absolute sure. if i had to pick two more, maybe 6 and 8. loads of good choices |
StrikeOfTheBeast
02.20.19 | 1, 3, and 9 are the best with 14 as the runnerup for me imo. |
Dewinged
02.20.19 | 2 no doubt. |
Meridiu5
02.20.19 | i thoroughly enjoyed brave new world.
my fav is angra - rebirth though so theres 2. |
onionbubs
02.20.19 | depending on what counts as a comeback album, whether it be first album since getting back together or first album in a really long time
either way, glassjaw is a definite |
Morningrise767
02.20.19 | 2 & 19 are my favs from this list. |
RogueNine
02.20.19 | 16 and 20 m8. |

02.20.19 | Bad Religion - The Process of Belief |

02.20.19 | Carcass - surgical steel |
veninblazer
02.20.19 | @Royl: Was thinking about that one as well |
Morningrise767
02.20.19 | Ah yes, Surgical Steel is great as well! |
ArsMoriendi
02.20.19 | Blackstar isn't really a comeback album, if you're being honest it's The Next Day
Which isn't nearly as good |
ArsMoriendi
02.20.19 | Also, out of these I vote for 12 |
sixdegrees
02.20.19 | mbv |
Ebola
02.20.19 | Painkiller |
Sinternet
02.20.19 | how are 25 and 26 here |
sixdegrees
02.20.19 | deathbat |
Allergist
02.20.19 | Haha yeah 25 especially is shit but hey, not my choice |
veninblazer
02.20.19 | 25 and 26 are legitimately pretty good albums, and I interpreted "comeback" as albums that took over 10 years to release coming off of prior full-lengths. |
budgie
02.20.19 | perdition city
cuz themes from william blake was haggard
hopefully trif doesnt see this |
J() Alexander
02.20.19 | Obscura and Painkiller comeback albums? what
I mean, maybe Obscura, but Painkiller? |
J() Alexander
02.20.19 | How is The Seer a comeback album what the hell |
J() Alexander
02.20.19 | Or Heaven and Hell or... I'm just going to stop now. |
Allergist
02.20.19 | The seer isn’t really a comeback album but the rest of those you listed are absolutely comeback albums |
neekafat
02.20.19 | ...Like Clockwork by QotSA obvs |
J() Alexander
02.20.19 | How are they comeback albums? Painkiller was released two years after Ram It Down, Heaven and Hell two years after Never Say Die!, and Obscura is the only one that is close because it was released five years after The Erosion of Sanity, and even then I don't count it considering the band was just having troubles finding a label that was interested in their work. |
Kompys2000
02.20.19 | I think they're meaning it as in "Returning to or surpassing the quality of their earlier albums after releasing some not-so-good albums"
Not, like, "their first album after an extended break from releasing anything" |
J() Alexander
02.20.19 | That's a weird definition of "comeback" but ok. |
Allergist
02.20.19 | The period of time between album releases doesn't always have to matter for it to be a comeback album. Comeback albums can also be defined by a band making a great album after a string of crappy ones, a band "Coming back" to their original style after being distant from it for some albums.
Painkiller: JP had released a string of mediocre 80's hard rock albums and people were starting to lose hope in the band. Suddenly out of nowhere Painkiller is not only their first great album in a long time, but it's also the meanest and the heaviest album in their entire careers. JP had fully returned to their distinguished sound for the first time in about a decade.
Heaven & Hell: People forget, but Sabbath was a laughingstock in the late 70's. Issues among band members being impossible to work with due to drugs and ego were widespread throughout the rock world, and their previous two albums were sellout shitheaps. During their Never Say Die tour, it was reported that people were buying tickets to see opener Van Halen and the attendance would drop 75% once Sabbath got on stage. After Ozzy left the band, there was zero focus on Sabbath. However, H&H quickly gave fans a reason to return to the band with one of their strongest albums yet and it helped Sabbath pull themselves out of the bog they were sinking into. Definitely a comeback for themselves and the fans.
Obscura: Gorguts had called it quits, done, broken up. Obscura is the barebones definition of comeback album I think, because any album released after a band has separated and reformed should be considered a comeback album by default.

Kompys2000
02.20.19 | I dunno man, literally everyone else itt understood it to mean "Comeback to quality" and not "comeback to recording", so maaaybe it isn't that weird |
veninblazer
02.20.19 | Honestly I can't think of a ton of examples in that vein, so I went with "comebacks after an extended break" instead. Maybe FATA's "Holding a Wolf By the Ears" considering it was better than Abandon Your Friends? Idk |
JWT155
02.20.19 | Personally as a fan, I loved Haste the Day's last record Coward. As a huge fan of Jimmy and the early band's work along with their later records, I thought it was a perfect marriage bewteen the new and the old and an excellent send off for the band. |

02.20.19 | dude I still need to hear that |

02.20.19 | cynic - traced in air |

02.20.19 | I love it.

02.20.19 | I liked htd's first two albums back in the day |

02.20.19 | Me as well, Burning Bridges is still one of my go to records. Ever check out Trenches? It was Jimmy Ryan's side project wher ehe made a Post Metal album. |

TheMightyScoop
02.20.19 | D'Angelo - black messiah
melt banana - fetch
Portishead - third
|
Avagantamos
02.20.19 | colored sands
obscura too I guess but I never really thought of that as a comeback album |
Avagantamos
02.20.19 | also aphex twin - syro |
mrdogthrow
02.20.19 | Like in the context of having a bunch of shitty albums and then making a good one?
Emmure
Like in the context of the band being virtually nonexistent for years on end and then making an album which potentially may or may not be up to par with said bands magnum opus?
My Bloody Valentine |
kalkwiese
02.20.19 | Heaven And Hell m/
Also SikTh - The Future in Whose Eyes? and the mini album Opacities they did before that. What a comeback, really damn good stuff |
Middle18
02.20.19 | Busted 'Half way there' |
Zig
02.20.19 | Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers |
Doibhin69
02.20.19 | Californication |
Slex
02.20.19 | Itd be tough for me to pick between Slowdive and QOTSA I think |
DungeonBoy
02.20.19 | Damage Done by Dark Tranquillity. I was always a fan of the Gallery era sound, and they started to get much more experimental with the Projector/Haven era, but then out of nowhere they release Damage Done which was such a reinvigorating album that really brought them back to life. |
Scheumke
02.20.19 | Soilwork - The Living Infinite
Machine Head - The Blackening
Behemoth - The Satanist
*update: Scratch the last one and replace with Cradle of Filth - Hammer of the Witches. I never liked older Behemoth anyway and Cradle's was really a return to form. |
BigPleb
02.20.19 | 16 gets my vote. |
Marehelm
02.20.19 | The Seer, men |
kalkwiese
02.20.19 | I also really liked Soundgarden's King Animal, but it's not "the best" comeback album out there. Just great |
PyramidNoise
02.20.19 | Does Death Magnetic count as a comeback? That one was alright. |
Trifolium
02.20.19 | 32!!! Third was a complete triumph. |
DikkoZinner
02.20.19 | Morbid Angel - Kingdoms Disdained |
Uzumaki
02.20.19 | I’ll go with 2, 21 and 23, although I don’t think 21 could technically be considered as a “comeback” album, mainly because his previous album was well received. |
Uzumaki
02.20.19 | Also, I think “Devil” by Chiodos would qualify as a comeback album. |
SitarHero
02.20.19 | Black Gives Way To Blue |
SitarHero
02.20.19 | Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Neekafat's name was Neefakat all along! :D |

02.20.19 | Surgical Steel

02.20.19 | I guess I’ll vote for Colored Sands |
deathschool
02.20.19 | You can vote for 3, gill |

02.20.19 | Again, Obscura is absolutely a comeback album. The Seer really isn't agreed. |
InFlamesWeThrash666
02.20.19 | Brave New World and the new Tool album |

02.20.19 | in that case, also Burzum - Belus |

02.20.19 | but man, Jupiter is such an underrated album. I just pulled that gorgeous reflective digi out of storage and spun it for some friends. |

04.04.19 | 30 gets the prize, if it depends on me. |
dimsim3478
04.04.19 | ooh this is a really good idea for a poll. feel like it should be featured. |
anarchistfish
04.04.19 | Black gives way to blue |
Trifolium
04.04.19 | It could have been featured, but it's an old one that's been bumped so it won't happen again.
Plus my vote for Third (32) wasn't counted :-(
Such a stunning comeback and re-imagining of what Portishead could be |
DoofDoof
04.04.19 | Portishead 'Third' gets one vote from me
Then can you kindly put up, and have me vote for:
- Boards of Canada, Tomorrow's Harvest
- Dinosaur Jr, Beyond
Also shouts out to The Membranes and Dream Syndicate who both came back after ages and sounded maybe better than ever.
Really bad comebacks would make a great list. |
Demon of the Fall
04.04.19 | Obscura, Like Clockwork & Third
All borderline 5/5 for me, in fact I might change my ratings. |
Allergist
04.04.19 | I seriously don’t understand why some of us get featured and some don’t. To be fair a lot of truly great list do end up getting featured but just as many great list end up getting ignored. I’m not saying my list is one of those at all, but is just an observation I’ve made since I’ve joined this site. Like a few weeks ago there was a top 10 song list that somehow got featured even though it had zero descriptions or even pictures. Like why would that get a feature??? |
osmark86
04.04.19 | I'm assuming the definition for comeback album here isn't strictly after a hiatus or reformation or something along those lines judging by the picks. |
butt.
04.04.19 | Slowdive - Slowdive, for sure |
DoofDoof
04.04.19 | Comeback defined as at least 4+ year gap between recordings.
Worst comebacks top (bottom?) 10:
- Guns n Roses, Chinese Demo
- Metallica, St Anger
- Eminem, Revival
- Animal Collective, Painting With
- Garbage, Not Your Kind of People
- Smashing Pumpkins, Shiny and Bright
- The Pixies, Head Carrier
- Bloc Party, 4
- Massive Attack, Heligoland
- Faith No More, Sol Invictus
All those albums damaged reps, not saying they are all terrible, but they did damage reps and cool interest in any prolonged comeback |
luci
04.04.19 | I'd put the last Japandroids record in worst comebacks |
osmark86
04.04.19 | and Thrice's To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere |
DoofDoof
04.04.19 | luci - yeah Japandroids comeback sunk without trace, good pick and an incredible memory you have to even remember ;) |
Demon of the Fall
04.04.19 | 'Comeback defined as at least 4+ gap between recordings.'
I was confused by some of these entries and that simply doesn't sound long enough. I voted anyway. |
DoofDoof
04.04.19 | Four years seems to be the 'ok, where are you?' cut off.
All the albums I picked for worst comeback were defined as comebacks...except maybe AnCo as the various members of the band were still very active in solo work
Pumpkins was a comeback as it was the famed 'returning original members comeback' - the most dangerous one for expectations |
zakalwe
04.04.19 | Dino Jr - Beyond deserves a mention. |
DoofDoof
04.04.19 | that's a second vote zak for 'Beyond' ;D
I actually prefer that one to 'Farm' |
Faenrir
04.04.19 | Ah yeah, worst comeback would make a fun list :D
|
DoofDoof
04.04.19 | there's something beautifully tragic, nay poetic, about a clueless comeback attempt |
butt.
04.04.19 | oh shit I forgot about Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
That's my #1 comeback album |
osmark86
04.04.19 | Beyond is a good call |

04.04.19 | Gorguts - Colored Sands for me |
Yotimi
04.04.19 | Slowdive

04.18.19 | Is this still going? Cuz yeah: Daughters. |
