01.16.19 | some terrific songs here but it's absolutely criminal -- criminal, i say! -- that Drive, Imitation of Life, and The Great Beyond wouldn't make the top 20 |
ArsMoriendi

01.16.19 | Unbelievable song catalogue. |
Rowan5215
01.16.19 | "Also ballsy not choosing anything from Green"
Green is not very good outside a couple tunes imo
Half a World Away, Drive, Sitting Still were all contenders here zak, quality bangers all
The Great Beyond has always kinda baffled me, I prefer the live cuts where it's a bit less electronified/produced but it's still far from a classic |
Rowan5215
01.16.19 | oh yeah and I absolutely love Rockville but it's better live with Mills on the vox |
Rowan5215
01.16.19 | lol this got featured huh, must have been my high quality discourse |
Ev1lToaster
01.16.19 | "Laughing" would be my personal pick for best, but I can't gripe with any of these. "Moral Kiosk" would rate high too. |
Rowan5215
01.16.19 | I guess I need to reconsider my feelings for Laughing huh
not huge on the Moral Kiosk verses but got damn that chorus yo |
neekafat
01.16.19 | Where's Orange Crush bitch |
Ev1lToaster
01.16.19 | Same here. The verses are nice and all, but that chorus is what keeps me coming back |
Ev1lToaster
01.16.19 | Nightswimming is a very appropriate pick for #1. Couldn't imagine compiling a top 5 without including that. "Find The River" would probably be a top 5 contender too; that 1-2 punch closer to Automatic is so damn good. I'm glad you didn't include "Everybody Hurts" and "Man on the Moon", I see both of those on R.E.M. lists too often. |
zakalwe
01.16.19 | Classic tunes though.
R.E.M are right up there as one of the best despite a lot of the material on the last few albums being ropey. |
Rowan5215
01.16.19 | Orange Crush is pretty fucking annoying @neek, bring it
I love Man on the Moon and it has some iconic Stipe lines but it's probably not even top 5 on Automatic. Everybody Hurts is definitely bottom 2 on there much as the message is admirable |
Rowan5215
01.16.19 | eh gotta disagree, Accelerate slaps front to back. Collapse had some questionable stuff but it's still a great album for them to go out on |
Ev1lToaster
01.16.19 | "Man on the Moon" is a damn good song, I just think it's such a cliche pick. I suppose that's a little elitist of me, lol. "Everybody Hurts" is a song I could just never connect with though. My dad used to play it all the time and I thought it was just the most boring thing ever. Also yeah, "Orange Crush" is a really grating song. |
insomniac15
01.16.19 | I Took Your Name, Crush with Eyeliner, Bittersweet Me, Accelerate, Lotus, Saturn Return, So Fast So Numb, All the Best, Imitation of Life, Country Feedback, UBerlin, I Remember California and What's the Frequency, Kenneth? are some of my favorite R.E.M. tracks. I still have to dig their albums before Green though. |
TheMightyScoop
01.16.19 | Laughing and Pretty persuasion definitely belong on this list |
Rowan5215
01.16.19 | pretty persuasion is one of the worst on reckoning
@insomniac love i remember cali and so fast so numb, nice picks |
zakalwe
01.16.19 | Thinking about it Monster has some absolute gems.
Kenneth

Star 69

01.16.19 | omitting the fact that basically every r.e.m song is my favourite r.e.m song
1. wrong child
2. near wild heaven
3. moral kisok
4. shiny happy ppl
5. nightswimming
6. fireplace
7. try not to breathe
8. we walk
9. so central rain
10. laughing |
zakalwe
01.16.19 | It’s a bloody good selection regardless |
robin
01.16.19 | green is the best r.e.m album what the hellllllllll |
Rowan5215
01.16.19 | it bores me so much lol. World Leader Pretend and the last two songs are tight |
zakalwe
01.16.19 | Don’t be a penis row. Listen again. |
insomniac15
01.16.19 | I was so bummed when they called it quits after Collapse. That one and Accelerate were the best stuff since New Adventures. |
zakalwe
01.16.19 | It really did unravel in the end. Half filled venues, half baked albums. Shame. |
AngryJohnny
01.16.19 | so many great songs to choose from, laughing would be right up there for me as well |
zakalwe
01.16.19 | The summary for 5 is bang on |
Kompys2000
01.16.19 | Shame nobody's mentioned Catapult yet, probably my favorite track from Murmur |
zakalwe
01.16.19 | Ooooh we were little boys, ooooh we were little girls.
The ‘did we miss anything’ bit of catapult is absolutely classic |
Rowan5215
01.17.19 | for sure, actual chorus is a bit annoying though |
onionbubs
01.17.19 | 1 is 1 hell yea
shoutout harborcoat try not to breathe and perfect circle too. id also probably throw in moral kiosk (as previously mentioned that fucking chorus) and laughing |

01.18.19 | Really love The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite. |
Rowan5215
01.18.19 | Leave slaps but it's so undynamic after that switch-up in the first minute promises so much. it's a bit frustrating that the rest is just a loop
Sidewinder has some of my favourite Stipe lyrics, so good |
Point1
01.18.19 | Nightswimming, Find the River, and Country Feedback in the top 5 guarantees we'd get along. |
zakalwe
01.18.19 | Does anyone genuinely think Find the River or Nightswimming is shit? I’ve yet to meet one. |
Ikarus14
01.19.19 | No 'Losing My Religion'?!
0/10 |
Kompys2000
01.19.19 | Is it just me or is Document not getting enough love in this thread? Disturbance at the Heron House, Exhuming McCarthey, and Finest Worksong are all top-tier R.E.M. |
Deadwing42
01.19.19 | Your picks from the earlier albums are so good that I feel like I need to give Up and Reveal a closer listen. I've always kind of suspected those albums are under appreciated, but whenever I get into an REM mood I find myself jumping between the dozens of songs I already love... they have such a deep catalog.
My list would definitely include Sidewinder, Exhuming McCarthy, Pretty Persuasion, and probably something different from Monster and either Ignoreland or Monty Got a Raw Deal. But every song here is golden. |
Deadwing42
01.19.19 | Does anyone else feel like Out of Time is one of the hardest albums to assess in terms of quality? There are times when it seems like a top 3 REM album and others where I think it might be one of their worst. The good songs are some of their absolute best, but there are a couple of tracks that are almost embarrassing. Green is kinda the same way, but less good. |
Kompys2000
01.19.19 | Yeah I didn't really like Out of Time that much when I first heard it but whenever I come back to Texarkana or Near Wild Heaven or even Losing My Religion I always I'm always really impressed by the songcraft. |
Rowan5215
01.19.19 | cheers Deadwing lad... yeah for all Up's faults (it's a few songs too long, the electronic drums are pretty dated and it's goddamn depressing) it's a gorgeous album with some of Stipe's best ever lyricism and it's the kind of bold step most bands would not make that late into their careers
Reveal is largely fine, I like the Beach Boys-inspired second half more but only the song mentioned here is a clear standout imo
replace Radio Song and SHP with Fretless and Free World Baby and Out of Time'd be remembered as one of their strongest efforts I reckon. those songs are rubbish but it's a gorgeously composed album on the whole with some incredible moments |
zakalwe
01.19.19 | I’ve always found Out of Time overated. One of the worst in my opinion, always stunk of product despite some classic tunes. |
Rowan5215
01.19.19 | crazy what you could've had
crazy what you could've had, I NEED THIS |
StonedManatee
01.25.19 | Reckoning > any other R.E.M. album or song. |
