Round 4: Sharkattacks Continental Rec Tournament

Now we move on from familiar territory into the unknown. We are taking a trip to Africa to find the best records from there. I barely know anything from here so I’m interested to see what we got here. Sandwichbubble and astral have .1 handicaps they can use still.
1Fela Kuti
The '69 Los Angeles Sessions

My hint is from the king of the afrobeat. I really only know Fela and Fela related music from this continent. It might be wise to rec similar funky shit or you could go for something completely different.

Relaxing and soothing folk music. Not exactly sure what the instrument the singer is playing but it sounds like a mixture of harp and guitar or something. It’s sometimes accompanied by a vibraphone (?) or a xylophone I’m not sure but it does add a lot to the feel of the record. The vocals are amazing and sound beautiful with the music. This is a great record with only 4 songs but each one is memorable and beautiful. The backup harmonies sound amazing with this type of simple and subtle African folk music.

Not getting a very strong African vibe from this record. Sounds like stuff my sisiter used jam all the time. It’s a like electro pop or something and while every now and then it does trip on some good shit, it mostly sounds like a less “rock” Coldplay or something. There are a few good beats but the vocals usually ruin it. Was sort of hoping for more African sounds here but instead it comes off as more college kid music or something. Sorry I couldn’t get into this.

Now this is what I’m talking about! I was hoping for more of this stuff for the Africa round. A shit ton of percussion but the actual music played sounds very limited. Sounds like maybe just a synth and bass player or something but very minimalist. It’s all about the rhythm and this record has got it. Every song is a banger but also very dark and menacing. Always serious but forever danceable. This is exactly what I wanted to listen to this round.

Damn. Those vocals. The rhythms. The sax. That fucking BASS! This band sounds like the African Mars Volta with a better singer and a bass player who listened to way too much Jesus Lizard or something. The music is a progressive take on jazz, punk, metal, rock and roll. It just kicks ass but is very smart. The songs don’t drag because they are dense and there’s lots of parts but not too much. It’s not overflowing and nothing sounds out of place or half-baked. It’s all very well-written and exciting.

I mean for a metal band this was pretty good. I wish it was a little faster though. When the drummer does his blast beats it almost seems like he takes a little breath before doing or something and comes off not as tight as other metal bands. Still I actually sort of dug this at times with the crazy tempo changes and tremelo picked guitar. Vocals ruin obviously like most metal bands and the songwriting seems very lackluster. Even at 18 minutes I still had to look down way too often to see how much time was left. I have it a few listens but I don’t think I’ll be coming back to this.

I like it. It’s sort of jazz meets punk but also not jazz and not punk haha. This was by far the longest album this round but it never got boring and I never checked how much time was left. The lyrics and vocals are great. The music is happening and adventurous. The rhythms are different and unique but very effective. It’s hard to describe but I did really enjoy it. I’ve been coming back to this one a lot and it just keeps getting better. I like how the vocals are very sparse but when they do come in the lyrics hit like a ton of bricks and the players sound very working-class and regular. Just with a weird taste in music. Such a great and one of a kind record.
