05.21.18 | reading is for nerds |
Rowan5215
05.21.18 | same |
Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | Shining is clearly 1 I'm sorry. Stand and IT have too many flaws to stand up to something as clearly flawless as The Shining |
Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | Also yeah fuck Kubrick's Shining, but at the same time I don't blame Kubrick for ignoring all the substance and pre-M Night Shamaylaning the ending |
Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | Shining is legit the only book to ever scare me and make me cry due to how deeply humanising, exploitative of innate human fears, and overall just deeply poignant it is
Never been so scared of a firehose in my life forreal |
Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | Also quadruple comment but legit FUCK anyone who writes off Stephen King bc he's too popular, or ignore him in literary discussion because as you say he is THE fucking premiere character writer of all times. Character is my favourite aspect of storytelling so he appeals to me a great deal |
MotokoKusanagi
05.21.18 | "Insomnia" is one of my favorites by Stephen King that doesn't get a lot of praise. It's certainly not his best but I loved it none the less |
Rowan5215
05.21.18 | "too popular" is the logic of dweebs agreed
I haven't read Insomnia yet but I ordered it the other day actually. really should have got it earlier cos of the Dark Tower connections |
Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | One book I've always wanted to read but can't find a copy of is Gerald's Game. Seeing the brilliant film only made me wanna read it even more |
Casavir
05.21.18 | He's definitely one of my favorite authors as well. Covers a a massive range of genres successfully, especially with The Dark Tower. |
Rowan5215
05.21.18 | yeah I haven't read Gerald's Game but the movie was fucking awesome. have a strange feeling it would be a gruelling ride |
Icebloom
05.21.18 | Nice list, interesting read. Have only read 1,2, 4 and 10 of these, but they're all awesome. I had a little trouble getting through the middle part of It though, and I thought 11.23.63's ending was lazy and clichéd.
Have you read the Bachman Books? The Long Walk is my favourite novel ever, and the Running Man is fantastic as well. |
Gyromania
05.21.18 | Gotta agree with astral, the shining is far and away the best |
Icebloom
05.21.18 | Oh and I read The Gunslinger too, but I couldn't stand it lol. Too weird and boring for me I guess |
TheGreatQ
05.21.18 | Nice to see some love for Revival! I absolutely loved it but it seems to not get much attention.
Have you read Cell yet? If so, what did you think? It gets a lot of shit but I thoroughly enjoyed it. |
Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | Cell was my first King so I always liked it |
Rowan5215
05.21.18 | @Icebloom been tryina find a copy of the Bachman Books with Rage for years but they're so rare, so nah I haven't got to that one yet
@Q I found Cell really mediocre, it wasn't bad but it didn't have any of the King magic for me when I read it. just generic imo |
DinosaurJones
05.21.18 | Cell was all right, it started cool, but it felt like it turned into the Stand 2.0. I haven't read it in years though, so I might be wrong in my assessment. |
Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | I havent read Cell since it came out tho also so i may not enjoy it as much as 13 yr old me did |
Divaman
05.21.18 | Check out The Green Mile. |
pizzamachine
05.21.18 | That settles it, I was rec’d Night Shift so when I’m done reading IT I’ll just buy it |
Astral Abortis
05.21.18 | I have a couple of old Bachman paperbacks lying around somewhere |

05.21.18 | Dolores Claiborne is a really good read. Gerald's Game is as well. |
Get Low
05.21.18 | I lucked out so fucking hard because my local used paperback store had a copy of The Bachman Books for fifty cents, apparently not aware of the actual value of it. Rage is fantastic, and The Long Walk is probably one of his top 5. |
BigHans
05.21.18 | The Stand and IT are flat out masterpieces. Great non horror works are The Shawshank Redemption, The Body (Stand By Me), and Green Mile.
Christine is a baller book too, it was the first King I read. |
Rowan5215
05.21.18 | not really a fan of Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, bit of a drab read tbh
The Body is fucking incredible, Apt Pupil is heaps good too |
Deathconscious
05.21.18 | Wizard and Glass was one of my least favorite of the Dark Tower series. Anyways, i still havent read most of these, i should probably get on it. |
Egarran
05.21.18 | No Desperation? I guess it's about 300 pages too long. That cocaine, man. |
Sinternet
05.21.18 | kubrick's shining is better than the book tbh |
cold
05.21.18 | "No Desperation? I guess it's about 300 pages too long. That cocaine, man."
Oh man, I forgot about that one. |
artiswar
05.21.18 | It is the best but I think Bag Of Bones is really underrated. Such an engrossing book. |
Egarran
05.21.18 | "Oh man, I forgot about that one."
Absolutely worth it reading the first half. |
cold
05.21.18 | I read it way backkkkk when but don't remember much of it. My dad was a huge Stephen King fan and had nearly all the books, I do remember him making a big gripe about me reading Gerald's Game, and then I found out why later, haha. |
BeyondCosby
05.21.18 | Good list man. A lot of obvious ones for sure but it's hard for it not to be. On mine I would definitely have:
Lisey's Story: I feel like a lot post-accident King gets overlooked, but this story is really something special. I don't feel like King always sticks the landing, but everything about this book is perfect. One of the greatest last pages of all time in my opinion.
The Dark Tower: I love Wizard but man.... this one just takes the cake. The search for God that starts in the previous book and ends in this one is breath-taking.
The Green Mile: There isn't a lot of scary stuff in this one but man is it heart-wrecking. |
theacademy
05.21.18 | carrie shits all over IT |
Get Low
05.21.18 | Carrie is so poorly written compared to his later works. Even the improvement from Carrie to 'Salem's Lot was huge. Always enjoyed the movie adaptations more than the book. |
butcherboy
05.21.18 | first two thirds of hearts in Atlantis is some of his strongest writing in my opinion..
|
sblevins95
05.21.18 | If you haven't read The Green Mile yet, that's my personal favorite of his of the few I've read... it's probably my favorite novel of all time. Highly highly recommend. |
MO
05.21.18 | 1408 has some of my fav short stories from him. The River Virus heads North and the Man in the Black Suit are so chilling |
klap
05.21.18 | Good list dude, there was a point in my life where I read every single King book although I’m not up to date on his newer stuff (case in point I haven’t read Revival, but Sleeping Beauties was the jam). Anyways my ranking:
IT
The Dark Tower series (cant split this up imo but you’re right Wizard is the best. Think the ending is unfairly maligned although including himself in the story was a bad idea)
11/22/63
Pet Sematary
The Stand
Desperation
The Long Walk
Salem’s Lot
The Dead Zone
I agree Night Shift is probs his best short story collection. Absolute fire. From what I remember they’re all pretty stellar tho. Different Seasons def the best of his novellas
The new one is getting solid reviews, I’ll probs check it out |
klap
05.21.18 | Realized I only put 9 there, ten would probs be Black House. The Shining is great but I think it’s never become a favorite bc the culture is too saturated with it, if that makes sense. Sick of the story in other words |
Hawks
05.21.18 | IT and Pet Sematary are my favs then The Stand and The Shining but I haven't read much else of his tbh. |
theacademy
05.21.18 | carrie being poorly written but still better than It is a testament to It's weaknesses |
theacademy
05.21.18 | good book but way too much goddam detail (and im not talking about the interludes, or derry at all-- its a rare problem when characters are too flushed out but It had that problem) |
theacademy
05.21.18 | fleshed |
klap
05.21.18 | I dk, i might be biased bc it was my first King but I liked all the details in IT. Derry felt more fleshed out in one book than castle rock did in six (granted it was 1000 pages). And aside from the child orgy the ending is really superb. I also have a soft spot for long winded King - pretty sure I am the only person who will defend the Tommyknockers even tho that book is even more coked out than IT |
Papa Universe
05.21.18 | "this is an entirely personal pick"
a good one at that.
also, loved the hell out of 11.23.63 |
Papa Universe
05.21.18 | Under the Dome anyone? |
Papa Universe
05.21.18 | I liked Dark Tower quite a bit. It's not the best read there is, but it is a decent enough fantasy series. |
klap
05.21.18 | Under the Dome gets some shit bc it reuses a lot of standard King tropes for his bigger novels w a large cast of characters, and the end kind of sucks, but it was an enjoyable read |
Papa Universe
05.21.18 | who cares about cliches, if they work. that's why people still watch the Insidious films. |
klap
05.21.18 | Ya, but everyone knows the first insidious is the best ;) |
Papa Universe
05.21.18 | so? people also know Under the Dome isn't Stephen's magnum opus, but it is still a bloody fucking ride, aye? |
Rowhaus
05.21.18 | The Stand was one of the best books I ever read. I read it in Boulder too which made it extra special >:) |
Papa Universe
05.21.18 | will post a similar list in a bit |
Deathconscious
05.21.18 | Insidious is alright. dont understand the high praise it got. |
Papa Universe
05.21.18 | you could, but don't have to |

05.21.18 | It’s good, liked it better than the conjuring at least |

05.21.18 | short stories about the raft, and the quit smoking organization are both ducking killer |

05.21.18 | I liked the second Conjuring more than the first one. |

05.21.18 | some jumpscare films are actually effective. |
Papa Universe
05.21.18 | Sinister, Conjuring, Insidious and such. VHS too in a way |
Rowhaus
05.21.18 | Sinister had some great scares |

05.21.18 | Second conjuring was def better. Sinister was great |
Deathconscious
05.21.18 | i thought The Conjuring was average as fuck. |
TheWalkinDude
05.21.18 | IT and The Stand? Why sir you have excellent taste |
artiswar
05.22.18 | The Conjuring was ok but I Know What You Did Last Summer was truly great. The character development alone. |
Rowan5215
05.22.18 | @klap cheers lad, good list. I agree that even though the big villains are (probably deliberately) underwhelming, the ending of the Dark Tower is still fucking fantastic. way too many people just interpreting that one as a cheap twist when it's thematically one of his best
Different Seasons is pretty dope, but I read it coming off the back of all TDT books and I was super burnt out on King. Don't think I ever read the fourth novella in there, I should revisit
He has way too many short stories to name but yeah the Jaunt, the Raft, the Man Who Loved Flowers and Children of the Corn are all probably his best that I've read. His full on horror tends to be better in small doses imo |
Rowan5215
05.22.18 | also @acad, IT's weaknesses are kinda what makes it so unique. I'll take ambitious, heavily flawed books like IT and the Stand over technically better, but less insane/ambitious ones like The Shining, Carrie etc any day |
TheSonomaDude
05.22.18 | Night Shift is probably the greatest short story compilation ever published. Every story goddamn hits |
Astral Abortis
05.22.18 | Cheap copy of the bachman books https://www.bookdepository.com/Bachman-Books-Stephen-King/9781444723533?ref=grid-view&qid=1526964805678&sr=1-177 |
Rowan5215

agreed hard w this, it's pretty much why i stan for books like the tommyknockers and needful things, even when King isn't on his game he does widescreen, epic horror better than most
also rowan, totally forgot about four past midnight for novellas. that one is great too, the langoliers in particular is ace |
Astral Abortis
05.22.18 | "Looks like you can't get the original Bachman Books online for anything less than $40."
That's honestly like the price of a standard book in Australia. I mean just today I paid $30 for The Man In the High Castle by Philip K. Dick |
Rowan5215
05.22.18 | yeah that sounds about right, given that it's a 4x book collection $40 is actually a pretty decent price. except then you gotta add shipping on that shit
@klap I had Four Past Midnight at one point but I'm pretty sure my brother took it. might have to buy a copy along with like, the other 30 books I don't own yet lmao |
Astral Abortis
05.22.18 | I inherited a shittonne of second hand books from my dad so I have a whole stash of old crappy King novels in an old box that I need to sift through eventually. |

05.22.18 | I enjoyed Under the Dome. From what I’ve read The Stand is definitely the best, Duma Key the worst. |
Egarran
05.22.18 | "Far too often ignored though are his short stories."
Yeah I read Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption before it was cool. At the time I just thought it was a cute little story, didn't see it becoming the most popular movie ever. |
Krvst
05.22.18 | While it goes a bit peak Stephen king mental at the end I really love Duma Key |
Winesburgohio
05.22.18 | i love this list (and you) and will check all i haven't read pursuant to your arguments but i think my problem with IT is it has a cast of incredibly, meticulously characterised personages... and Beverley. i don't think he'd quite found the knack of writing women with the depth and nuance he offers the rest, and i get the cycle of trauma / indelible impacts of childhood with Bill's wife being a psychic double of her, but i wasn't convinced by how heavy-handed it was.
11.23.63 is everything i want in a novel - americana, back to the future, convincingly told love, patient, tragic and more haunting than scary, and i find it moving just thinking about it -- the days i was swept up in were magic, nothing plodded, everything fit, thanks
luv salem's lot, never see bag of bones or the sequel to the shining, Doctor Sleep, which is... an interesting read |
Astral Abortis
05.22.18 | Doctor Sleep is a pretty good book but it's hard to follow up the greatest novel of all times so I try not to be too hard on it |
zakalwe
05.22.18 | That short story about the finger coming out the plug hole was that in bag of bones? Bloody hell I haven’t thought about that in years. lol. |
Rowan5215
05.22.18 | Bag of Bones is a full novel not a short story thingo
@wines I think Beverly is really well-written, but heavy-handedness is... well yeah it's definitely part and parcel of his work. like he'll write about these things in the least sparing language possible about as often as he will make sure to drill into your head when a female character is attractive (like we get it, Marina was good-looking, fucking chill) it's just a thing I found I had to adjust to in his work to enjoy it. thank for comment, like and subscribe. |

@acad I feel that, Night Shift was actually my first but I read IT and exactly the right time in my life for it to hit me hard and god DAMN |
Rowan5215
05.22.18 | @wines agreed but don't forget the dream he has in the Candlewood Bungalows, where he hears someone pacing around upstairs and can't figure out if it's LHO or the Yellow Card Man and then Sadie says "It's the Jimla"

TedSchmosby
05.22.18 | Different Seasons is definitely my favourite of his short story/novella collections. Have no idea how he put that together. Each one is at least a 9/10 banger. Breathing Method movie when?
Under the Dome is some of the most fun I’ve had with a King book. Everythingg i love about him is on display there.
Christine is one I didn’t enjoy much at the time, but look back on it with such fond nostalgia and I think that’s reflective of the way he paints adolescence on the cusp of adulthood
Gerald’s Game is a top 10 for sure. Ending is still wack, like it was in the movie, but the eclipse scene and the hand scene are just as affecting |
TedSchmosby
05.22.18 | Might be a bit ridiculous in regards to The Body and Shawshank but Apt Pupil and The Breathing Method bang hard yeah |

Dude, King fans hate that novel and I have absolutely no idea why. It's very suspenseful, has some supernatural and almost trippy elements to it, and it has a strong female lead. It could be because it paints the police in a pretty negative light, but I think enough people hate the police to where that shouldn't be an issue. |
