04.24.18 | Coward and Attack of the Wolf King are better Haste the Day albums, imo. I don't agree with all the hate this list is getting. No, I can't really call any of these albums "classics" per se, but I thoroughly enjoy quite a few of them. Mostly 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8.
I never understood outright hatred of metalcore. |

04.24.18 | Ooooooooh. He told you, boy. |
Casavir
04.24.18 | Also, calling some of these selections "classic" is hilarious, especially when you consider the years in which they came out.
Take that Unearth pick for example. Back to the Times of Splendor by Disillusion, Ink Compatible by Spastic Ink, Temple of Shadows by Angra, Defiant Imagination by Quo Vadis, Where Memories Combine by Cea Serin, The Spell of Retribution by The Chasm, 8 Deadly Sins by Manticora (and many others great albums), etc. came out that same year and it's not better than any of them.
Your attempt to paint me as a slave to '70s/'80s nostalgia is laughable, truly. |

Sputnik does have an elitist streak but as long as you’re confident, don’t take people too seriously and play well with others, people will respect you even if your taste is contrarian
I’m curious as to what metalcore bands were listed that you think are shit though. You might have some defending to do buster!! |
splinter
04.24.18 | @jesterhead92
thanks for the advice
most of these bands sound just like noise, without any concept behind it. Honestly, I can't listen to Jane Doe (for much people the best "metalcore" album in history) longer than 30 seconds, because it is just a confusing mess of instruments with a singer who sounds like a dying cat. My ears are instantly bleeding. Good music needs a melody, that's my opinion. But tbh, lyrical it is really amazing.
Except Norma Jean & Cave In I cannot listen to anything on this list, and even these bands are far away from "good" for me. |
Madbutcher3
04.24.18 | check Shai Hulud
Svalbard
Raised Fist
Darkest Hour (Deliver Us is a good starting point)
August Burns Red
otherwise idk i hate nwoahm and most melodic metalcore but those are probably the best accessible ones i can think of
|
Space Jester
04.24.18 | @splinter I understand why it might not sound good to your ears, it definitely is very chaotic and hard to take in at first but tbh most of the stuff I listed is much more in line with metalcore as it first formed in the late 80s and early 90s when it was known as “metallic hardcore.” Dissonant melodies and constant shifts in tempo and time signatures have been a staple since the beginning.
From what I can tell from your ratings and this list, you don’t like a lot of dissonance in your music. It can be an acquired taste but I think you could definitely find the appeal in it if you gave it some effort, many Converge fans will tell you that they didn’t like Jane Doe on first listen but after spending some time with it, it found it’s way into their hearts. |

The guitar work is incredibly intricate and creative without trying to show off too much, the drumming is absolutely insane, THICC bass, Bannon's vocals match the intensity of the music and his lyrics are incredibly poetic, the production/mixing is flawless, and the variety and structure make it stand out in the genre |

Space Jester
04.25.18 | They’ve definitely gotten a bit more accessible but personally their peak for me is WFCC and Jane Doe side by side, despite having different line-ups. My favorite metalcore and music in general is the stuff with more free-flowing song structures and not too much repetition. Jane Doe does have a few choruses in the first half but after that it’s pretty much all mathcore chaos |
zaruyache
04.25.18 | Jane Doe is a horribly abrasive album given how hardcore it is. Their approach to aggression there with their constant tempo and section shifts makes it a really inaccessible album if you're not already into metal. So imo it's definitely "different" to get into than normal extreme metal stuff. Same reason it took me a while to figure out how to listen to Meshuggah (I started on ObZen). |

Demon of the Fall
04.25.18 | @mortifieftw: there should always be a prize for introducing people to Converge
He'd probably dig AWLWLB as well. |
mortifierftw
04.25.18 | @Demon I think The Dusk in Us, AWLWLB, and Axe to Fall are the places to start getting into Converge |
pjquinones747
04.25.18 | The definition of metalcore is wherever you heard it first up until you realize where the genre was actually born. That's why folks like splint here are so grumpy about Converge being metalcore and, to him, sounding like shit.
This is metalcore at it's root, son. |
Get Low
04.25.18 | The Devil Wears Prada was the first metalcore band. They're the ones who started it all. |
SteakByrnes
04.25.18 | Converge is just ripping off 2009 era Of Mice & Men really |
SymbolicInTime
04.25.18 | That was very eloquently put and fact, Steak. |
pjquinones747
04.25.18 | I thought that Wage War was the first metalcore band |
SteakByrnes
04.25.18 | Good lord Wage War is so mediocre, I'll never understand the rabid love for them |
pjquinones747
04.25.18 | Bands like Wage War and I Prevail are merely descendents of the original garbage metalcore bands like Asking Alexandria and We Came as Romans. Doesn't make them any less garbage. |

04.25.18 | You have Keith Huckins to thank for this list. Conjecture aside, you stand only to gain by learning your history and attempting to understand why bands like Rorschach that "sound like shit" are so revered by heavy music communities. |

04.25.18 | "Maybe you should think about becoming a liar."

04.25.18 | I gave Fall of Ideals another shot. The only track that even remotely holds up anymore is The Weak Willed and even that one is middling. |

I too had a phase. But the farthest it went was me straightening my hair in the mornings lol |

05.01.18 | 2 is mediocre as shit, Trivium were never good, Haste the Day is mediocre, The Curse sux, and ive never heard It Dies Today but im sure they suck too. 1, 4, 5, 7, and 8 are fun listens that i come back to now and then. |
Mentasm
05.01.18 | Hey, thanks once again Splinter, great fucking list man. |
JeetJeet
05.01.18 | Whats funny is that the band that made #2 became WAY better when they became a post-hardcore band. |
Deez
05.01.18 | They band that made number 4 were also a FAR better hardcore/metal core band than KE |
