| Top 28 Rock Songs of All Time
Being a "Rocker" through and through, I celebrated the 28 days of February 2015 with my top 28 songs of all time. These bands and songs have led me on my musical journey and guided the path. I hope that you hear something you have never heard before, like it or not. | 28 | Tool Parabola
Gotta start this list off right. Now to be perfectly honest, Tool could take all of the top 28 songs for me; but that would not be a very intriguing or interesting list. It's hard to pick a favorite off Lateralus, but Parabol/Parabola is it. | 27 | Red Hot Chili Peppers By the Way
I first got into RHCP back in the funk metal days of "Blood Sugar Sex Magic" (i.e., the early 1990's). That album and "One Hot Minute" are by far the best to me. However, the song By the Way does a great job of meshing the early 90's style with the newer "Californication" style. | 26 | Black Sabbath Planet Caravan
I must give homage to the true fathers of Heavy Metal (sorry Led Zeppelin...it is not and will never be you), but this is not your typical Black Sabbath song. This is a tripped out, slow vibe that I originally heard covered by Pantera back in the mid 90's. Supposedly the meaning of this song is to be floating through the universe with your special someone. I can believe it. Both versions are great, but I am especially fond of Pantera's version included below. Enjoy the trip. | 25 | Incubus Calgone
Back in the late 90's and early 2000's, this nu-metal masterpiece provided the perfect timing to get in my car, roll the windows down, turn the stereo up, exit my College parking garage, and have the song "hit" exactly when I was driving around campus. Immature, I know...hey, it was more than 15 years ago. Seriously though, this song is from the superb early days of Incubus...the "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." days. It all went more commercial (and downhill to me) from here. After S.C.I.E.N.C.E., I remained a fan but could never get into Incubus as before. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was indeed a polarizing album for the early and late fan base. | 24 | Black Veil Brides In the End
You ask: Aren't their CDs sold exclusively at Hot Topic? Yes indeed. However, even with that said, this song (and the album Wretched and Divine) is pretty great. This song and album really helped me push through some hard times back in the beginning of 2014. And no, I don't shop at Hot Topic. | 23 | Gemini Syndrome Stardust
Continuing briefly further on the Industrial metal path, this is a recent song performed by Gemini Syndrome out of Los Angeles. This one caught my ear in 2013 and this album has stayed in my MP3 player for quite a while. | 22 | Black Label Society Stillborn
A shout out from this Chapter of the BLS. BLS is the brainchild of Zakk Wylde, Ozzy's former lead guitarist and virtuoso. Ozzy provides guest vocals on the original version of this song. If you like this song, also check out "In This River", dedicated by BLS to Darrell Abbott following his tragic death. | 21 | Deftones Passenger
The Deftones heralded in a new sound back in the mid 1990's. This is a song off of Deftones' third album White Pony. It also has guest vocals from Maynard James Keenan of Tool, which makes it even greater! | 20 | In Flames The Quiet Place
A European friend, a long time ago, gave me an In Flames album (Clayman). I was not into it at all, this Swedish Gothenburg sound, but I also couldn't get rid of it (as it was a heartfelt gift). So I held onto it for some years. After collecting dust in the closet; I pulled it out, popped it into the CD player, and pushed play. BOOM! That was it...I have been a big In Flames fan ever since. I especially enjoy their more recent music, which similar to this song, has a strong electronica vibe. | 19 | Soundgarden Outshined
Now, I will admit, the grunge years were brief but very significant to me. There were many, many bands that I loved from that time (e.g., Pearl Jam, STP, Nirvana, Faith No More, etc.), but not all have "aged" well. Some to me are better off left in the past as timepieces. However, I can still pull out the Badmotorfinger CD (and the majority of Soundgarden's albums), pop it into the car stereo, and not feel like I am listening to a 25-year old song. Outshined still hits as hard as a rock, even now. | 18 | Queens of the Stone Age You Can't Quit Me Baby
This song is a Desert Rock classic from around 1998. The tension between the rhythm section's groove and guitar work is so dominant, but works so well. At this point in time, QOTSA included three (3) members from another Desert Rock band to show up a bit later in my top 20. | 17 | Ozzy Osbourne No More Tears
I can still recall seeing this video in my High School pool hall during 9th grade on MTV. Every day, I would play pool and hear the latest and greatest of the early 90's (e.g., Pearl Jam, Metallica, Guns n' Roses, etc.). Those were some good times, except when somebody would hit the cue ball off the table and it was coming straight at you. | 16 | Fear Factory Final Exit
There are two certainties in life, and this song is not about taxes. Honestly, I have a hard time putting this song on here. Listener discretion is advised. I have literally seen a man drop to his knees, in a crowd of people, upon hearing this song played live. It can be that powerful. | 15 | Nine Inch Nails The Perfect Drug
On Valentine's Day...I dedicated this song to my "Perfect Drugs" including my Wife, caffeine, and music in general. Although not always in that order, that about covers it! NIN is the story of my whole freshman year in College. It was a quest for me and roommate to get every NIN CD out there. | 14 | Kyuss Demon Cleaner
Not many have heard of Kyuss; however, they were the fathers of Desert Rock and progenitors of Stoner Metal. I first heard of Kyuss through a Tool cover of this song, which included Kyuss' bassist Scott Reeder. Hailing out of the California Desert in the early 1900's, Kyuss flamed bright but for too short of a time. The band broke up in 1995, and everyone went their separate ways to form additional great bands. Josh Homme, the Guitarist, formed Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, etc. John Garcia, the vocalist, formed Slo-Burn, Unida, Hermano, Vista Chino, and recently released his own two solo albums. | 13 | White Zombie More Human than Human
I've always been a fan of sci-fi horror movies, so White Zombie (and Rob Zombie's later solo material) fit right in with me. Its funny...this song, and the album in general, was somewhat cultish and taboo back in the day. Now, you hear More Human than Human on the Teaser for Disney's Planes II movie. How things have changed. Still one of my favorite songs and albums. | 12 | Tool Jambi
When I first heard this song, I felt that it was a sledgehammer to the brain. Sure enough, it is one of the heaviest Tool songs out there. But the more you listen to it, the more the subtle rhythm and drumming patterns unfold...and the more this complex song begins to make sense. It has become one of may favorite songs off of 10,000 Days. | 11 | Black Sabbath Into the Void
This is a Vietnam era song, which speaks to the Doom of war. It is also one of the heaviest riffs that Tony Iommi came up with and that Ozzy sang over. This song has been covered by many great Metal bands over the years including versions by Exhorder, Soundgarden, Kyuss, Monster Magnet, and Brown Sabbath. . | 10 | Pantera Cowboys from Hell
By the time Grunge hit in the early 90's, I had my fill of 80's hair rock and jumped in readily. However, there was one 80's rock band that would not roll over and die. As Grunge burned brightly and quickly faded away to lighter post-grunge; Pantera started their meteoric display of power by becoming progressively heavier and more hardcore. When Metallica released their Load(and Reload), Pantera upped the ante even more. Pantera effectively kept metal alive single-handedly and it all started with this song. | 9 | Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare
When Guns N' Roses broke in the late 80's, they jumped out of the heap of 80's band with a sound that, although derived from 80's rock, was definitely a new beast. Similarly, when I heard this title track by Avenged Sevenfold, I felt that same sense of excitement. This is definitely a song best listened to in the car with the windows down... | 8 | Slipknot The Blister Exists
The Nine bring an energy unlike anything I have ever heard or felt. Ozzfest 2004 in Tampa, FL...heat was extreme and the dark clouds of Hurricane Frances were blowing in...Slipknot headlined the second stage. You would have had to see it to believe it, but the energy was so great during this show that many people had to be dragged out of the crowd. This song is characteristic of that raw energy and has a drum beat unlike any other. | 7 | A Perfect Circle Judith
Over a four year period;A Perfect Circle released some really great atmospheric, alternative metal. My favorite song is and will always be "Judith". This song has one of the best riffs ever, courtesy of Mr. Billy Howerdel, a former guitar tech for Tool. | 6 | Down Ghosts Along the Mississippi
During the time of this song, Down included Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown from Pantera, Pepper Keenan from Corrosion of Conformity, and others. Down brings a down-home sound unlike no other metal band out there. This is the first Down song I ever heard and is still one of my favorites. | 5 | Nine Inch Nails Hurt
The album "The Downward Spiral" came out around my freshman year of College. So at the same time that I was first out on my own and learning the ropes, 1995, NIN was pushing this juggernaut that is likely their best album. I have several favorite songs off this album, including "Reptile" and "March of the Pigs". However, the best song off this album was "Hurt", a slow and atmospheric Industrial song that laid bare the soul of NIN. | 4 | Guns N' Roses Welcome to the Jungle
Ahhh...there are so many great GNR songs to choose from. It was a really difficult decision. But as great as songs like "You Could Be Mine", "November Rain", and "Live and Let Die" are; "Welcome to the Jungle" is truly timeless. From the intro guitar lick and Axl's howl onward, this song is a firestarter and honest-to-God Rock anthem. It doesn't get much better than this song (other than my next 3 songs of course). | 3 | Metallica Enter Sandman
As much as I wanted to put "Wherever I May Roam" in this spot, as it is my favorite song off of the Black album, I just can't. Enter Sandman is, I feel, the best song ever made by Metallica. Before I go on, I will say that I have great respect and love for both the pre-Black work (Ride The Lightning is timeless!) and the post-Black work (St. Anger is a bit hard to listen to, but Death Magnetic makes up for it). I am unbiased to old and new, and still, Enter Sandman is it! Rock on like it is 1991 folks! | 2 | Tool Forty-Six & 2
Surprise, Surprise! Another Tool song. This song is off of the album AEnima, which was released in 1996 and indeed was the next step in evolution of Progressive Metal. For those who have been to a live Tool show, this song is the most visually psychedelic of them all, with some of the most jaw-dropping backdrops. To truly appreciate this song, it must be seen live. | 1 | Alice in Chains Would?
Alice in Chains stood apart and above the others to me. I loved Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, etc; but AIC had such a unique sound, and the harmony between Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell was so seamless. AIC understood how to incorporate "light and dark" (i.e., combination of heavy metal riffing with lighter passages) into their music. When I heard this song and the rest of AIC's 1992 album "Dirt", it truly opened the floodgates and I became a "Lifer". | |

04.21.18 | this is definitely not a troll. too much effort | JDubb
05.15.18 | Not a troll...sorry. Also, old enough to have witnessed: cock rock fall; grunge/alternative rise and ebb away; post-grunge take its place (god-awful); nu-metal and rap-metal surge forward and fall on their own swords (thanks to LB and FD); industrial and metal collide; metal-core have its time in the sun (as well as punk, ska-punk, and electronica); metal-core become more melodic and mainstream; a resurgance in thrash metal and grunge bands; flourishing of progressive and alternative metal; mainstream rock become more and more derivative; and metal sink back into the underground (for now). | Drifter
05.15.18 | I got something to blow your mind
A rocker does not necessarily have to make rock music to be one but a rapper must make rap music to be one

05.15.18 | I don't think OP cares too much for music that came out pre-1990 besides GnR and Sabbath. | JDubb
06.04.18 | OP does dig some pre-1990 hard rock and thrash metal. Just not as much as what came out post-1990. | kintups55
06.05.18 | All the songs that I've heard off of this are good jams, so I wasn't trying to bag on your taste or list, just was assuming your tastes mainly consists of 1990's-now judging by this list and your ratings is all. |
