| Here be some records Sput sleeps on the regular
None of y'all asked for this, but here it be; not restricted by genre or rating, this is a general rip-off of foxblood's recent list. Will [try to] go by decade. Suggested cuts and/or links contained in each selection as well. | 1 | | Gottfried Huppertz Metropolis, Op. 29
[1927; classical/soundtrack] This score of Fritz Lang's Metropolis features a stellar score by composer Gottfried Huppertz. To explain what the film, and by extension, the soundtrack, means to me would to devote an entire review dedicated to the score. The most recent, and best version of the original score, is from the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and conducted by Frank Strobel. This version compliments the [near]-complete restoration of the film, and features the complete score as well.
"Metropolis Medley:" (from a 1927 78 RPM shellac record, conducted by Gottfried Huppertz) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JEGOJ1jE6I
"Furioso: The Dance Of The Workers:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05vICviW2BY | 2 | | Julie London Julie Is Her Name
[1955; vocal jazz] I'm gonna be honest, this is partly a guilty pleasure and a genuinely relaxing record to listen to late at night. London's debut record finds her in this perfect blend of tenderness and underlying friction. While dated in numerous ways (production, lyrics), this album is perfect for those hot summer nights.
"Gone With the Wind:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGwjjiXIdkE
"Cry Me a River:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCGNYJOrebA | 3 | | The Godz Contact High With The Godz
[1966; freak folk/psych] The Godz were this group that, for better or worse, did whatever the hell they wanted. To denote this as a mark of, or the lack of, such quality depends on your patience with their studio experimentation and bare-bones compositions.
"Turn On:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Z8G3I_glnM
"Lay in the Sun:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lYJp14D0lA | 4 | | Burton Greene Burton Greene Quartet
[1966; free jazz] Burton Greene is often forgotten among his peers unfortunately, although the pianist's initial record with the Quartet was definitely his greatest achievement. Wild abandon is on fine display here, take note.
"Cluster Quartet:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za8_jUPmhBo | 5 | | Beaver and Krause In A Wild Sanctuary
[1970; electronic] I often forget I have this in my collection, but on occasion I draw it out and every time, I swear, I'm floored by the duo's work, which spanned back to the classic Nonesuch compilation "Guide to Electronic Music" back in 1968.
"Sanctuary:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNCnIB7AGaM
"Spaced:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xKO3KAtDZ0 (peep THX) | 6 | | Matching Mole Little Red Record
[1972; canterbury prog] Following Robert Wyatt's departure from Soft Machine, he formed Matching Mole to continue off from what he accomplished with 1970's "Moon in June;" however, by the time the band recorded the Robert Fripp-produced "Little Red Record," Wyatt allowed the band more control over the sound and direction the record would take, as with the Brian Eno-guested (and later brought to realization by Henry Cow) "Gloria Gloom" and the classic "God Song."
"Gloria Gloom:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s7Z1WDGmFI
"God Song:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMUx_9_trGw | 7 | | Henry Cow Unrest
[1974; rock in opposition/progressive rock] Henry Cow's second album takes a startlingly dark turn and introduces abrasive elements into their repertoire, often leaving me frightened, to be quite honest. This record found the band inching closer to perfection, which was only a year away.
"Half Asleep/Half Awake:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDLqUcUls6s
"Linguaphonie:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SffOYs260k0 | 8 | | The Walker Brothers Nite Flights
[1978; art rock] Okay, this is a glorified three-way solo album from each brother, with Scott's songs easily overshadowing John and Gary's songs, although they serve as a wonderfully normal contrast to Scott's otherworldly contributions.
"Shutout:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjRMxDdZ86g
"Den Haague:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZnWsrXuJnY | 9 | | Divine Styler Spiral Walls Containing Autumns Of Light
[1992; industrial hip-hop/noise rap] Okay, so I skipped the 80s for reasons, just to drop this onto y'all's laps. Divine Styler was one of Ice-T's boys and on his second record, thanks to the success of his debut a few years earlier, went balls to the wall with introducing the world to his own personal mental breakdown to the tune of god-knows-what. One moment he's going in on a verse, the next he's screaming his head off about his Islamic faith, it's mortifying yet wonderful.
"Grey Matter:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B179i79LtkA
"Heaven Don't Want Me and Hell's Afraid I'll Take Over:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYjsWeI5rJo | 10 | | Fishmans Uchuu Nippon Setagaya
[1997; dub/dream pop] Okay, these guys aren't exactly UNKNOWN but their final record is often overshadowed by "Long Season" and their classic live album "98.12.28," which is unfortunate because while those are both incredible albums, "Uchuu Nippon Setagaya" is by far the band's magnum opus.
"Daydream:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYjsWeI5rJo
"Ushiro Sugata:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATO_3zywRfw | 11 | | Paddy McAloon I Trawl The Megahertz
[2003; modern classical/pop] The sole solo record (although originally intended to be the next Prefab Sprout record) by Prefab Sprout mastermind Paddy McAloon was inspired by his temporary blindness (due to detached retinas) in 1999, listening to and experimenting with shortwave radio. Recording segments from the programs he listened to, McAloon used this as the groundwork for the 21-minute title track.
"I Trawl the Megahertz:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bSPNboKCzM | 12 | | Bun B Trill
[2005; southern hip-hop] Okay, this is based off of nostalgia and irony, because it's an alright record, but ridiculously stupid at some points. It's definitely a product of its time, but is a perfect time capsule of rap in the mid-aughts.
"I'm Ballin':" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abF8hy8CY64
"The Inauguration:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgqbjlUp35U (dinner's ready, where's grandpa?) | 13 | | Noir Noir V.I.T.R.I.O.L.
[2011; power electronics] I bought this on a whim a few years ago and haven't regretted it since. It's not the greatest record in the world, but Noir Noir is an interesting act worth exploring. Very atmospheric at times, but very brash and spare the next.
"Membrana:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWCsSPRJfP4
"The Blast Scene of Jack Persons:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATsgnlkQRbk | 14 | | Seiko Oomori Sennou
[2014; pop] At times, Seiko Oomori feels like a very watered-down yet way more eccentric version of Shiina Ringo, yet when Oomori -doesn't- sound like it, she is more wonderful than you'd expect. Admittedly a tad bit forgettable, but has a lot of personality to make up for it.
"Sennou:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07T4g94DW2Q&t=418s (can't be bothered to look for songs, here's the album) | 15 | | Laurel Halo Dust
[2017; electronic] Aside from some of the bigger music publications, Halo's third record seemed to slip by everyone's radars, including mine. Bringing vocals back to forefront after the way-out-there "Chance of Rain," "Dust" has a bit more in common with the classic-to-be (Lucid, be damned) "Quarantine."
"Moontalk:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ_RQWxGBS0 (and she actually sampled "See You Every Day" from Ghost in the Shell lmao)
"Sun to Solar:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn8ESu_HIKI | |
