Chrisma - Lola (from Chinese Restaurant)

There is nothing particularly outstanding about this track, except that it is a ridiculously pretty proto-synth-pop tune I was unable to get out of my head. A gorgeous mix of synths and tangling acoustic guitar. And the melody is a damn classic. |

01.31.18 | Thought Industry - Daterape Cookbook

This song is this weird crossover between Voivod and Primus with lyrics about telemarketing grandma's. There is not anything like it and it goes against most conventions in progressive music. Insane and awesome. |

Pure Reason Revolution - Victorious Cupid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxu-2iv_bm0
The now defunct PRR started their career as Prog Rock flag bearers with the incredible "The Dark Third". With the following album "Amor Vincit Omnia" they veered towards electronic elements and moog love keeping their amazing vocal prowess which you can hear in this song. Hope you dig! |

David Bowie - Sweet Thing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvJnF5JRDAs
Bowie's anti-glam magnum opus; dejected and barren of morals, the world depicted in "Sweet Thing" mirrors the dystopia of Orwell's 1984 combined with the influence of William Burroughs in the song's cut-up lyrical style. Nine minutes of terror, despair, sex, and ritual suicide. |

it's affected, histrionic, as is many its pop-rock ilk -- but it completely owns the transitions between movements and catches the listener in its whirlwind instead of losing itself in the eye. probably the kind of song you'd hear at the end of the world tbh, or at least at the end of an indie flick. |

02.01.18 | Sum 41 - "Walking Disaster": A Blink-182-ish touch to the production here is the only factor that keeps this track a step up from being really generic and boring. The songwriting is definitely not something to write (pun totally intended) home about and the decision to make the intro and outro so vastly different from the middle was much more confusing than inspiring in any way. The pacing is pretty off, too, which was surprising considering the song's format.

02.07.18 | oi, if nobody else suggests a song, I'll throw another one into the roost
Autobahn - The Moral Crossing
Recently released Autobahn album (of my reviewing) carried a mark of frantic songwriting true to the best of the post-punk's elites. And of all cuts on the album, the title track has been a particularly grim, but instrumentally rich endeavour with manic drums, ominous guitarwork, despair-ridden vocals and haunting atmosphere. Yum.

02.08.18 | Sandusky: Really a nice and pretty sounding song with chirping guitars and an upbeat vibe throughout, but I can't help but feel it was missing just an extra bit of oomph to carry it through. It ended up being a bit too repetitive, and lacked the variety I felt it could use to really carry it forward. Hell, idk. But it was a really good song either way. 3.9/5 |

Super fun and all over the place song, definitely something I could see myself getting into more even though it’s not something I’d usually listen to.
Jeff Buckley - I Woke Up in a Strange Place: 3.8
I mean, I’m a pretty big Buckley fan so this was an easy win for me. It’s not anything particularly outstanding, especially compared to his other stuff, but it’s just great to hear stuff from him I haven’t heard before and this definitely doesn’t disappoint.
Wildhart - Shine: 4.2
Man, this was just breathtaking and totally justified it’s length. I just couldn’t get enough of it while it was running and if the whole album is half this good I’m sure in for a treat.
Car Seat Headrest - Vincent: 4.2
This was a push-pull of attracting me but in the end I can’t help but fall for these drawn-out, constantly shifting, blissfully atmospheric rock songs you guys keep throwing at me. Honestly, it’s just great. Might have to check these guys out too sometime. |

New idea! Each person who adds their rating for the day just copies the list from the last user and adds in their rating. No need to do the avg until the end of the day at least though. That way the work for compiling it all is minimized and shared. The first person each day can just make the format and everyone else can add on.

02.18.18 | Meisai: Wasn't on board with it the whole time but okay yeah it was really fucking cool. 4.1
Don't Stand a Chance: Not the most convincing track ever, but I really like the playful nature of the instrumentation, and it's very much my kind of thing. 3.9
Taking Cassandra to the End of the World Party: These vocals do not fit the intensity of the music half the time, and the other half they're just painfully generic. The music itself is really cool though, but the vocals really hold it back. 3.4.
Also, updated! |

02.18.18 | Catch-up time!
Thought Industry - "Daterape Cookbook": This hit all the quirky metal sweet spots for me. The production is excellent and it's hella fun. Perhaps it could've been performed better, particularly in the percussion area, but that doesn't change the fact that it's really damn good.
4.2/5
Jeff Buckley - "I Woke Up in a Strange Place": I'll give the slightly boring production a pass since it is a live track, but the song as a whole drags quite a bit. Buckley himself is easily the best part with his vocal work.
3.6/5
Wildhart - "Shine": I like the song well enough, but all I see with this is missed potential. All of the performers are great, but they take over half of the track to do anything of note. If the vocal range was shown off earlier and if the jazz-flavored ending had more foreshadowing in the first half of the track, this would be so much more.
3.4/5
Car Seat Headrest - "Vincent": The vast amount of subtle genre influences surprised me here in a spectacular way. Jazz, ska punk, and 90's alt rock come together into one awesome package. While the vocalist is impressive, I would've liked a verse in the beginning of the track to show a bit of a calmer side to him. I need to get into this album btw.
4.1/5
Pure Reason Revolution - "Victorious Cupid": It's not conventional progressive rock, so there's at least that much, but its direction is way too stilted for my taste. The vocals are quite dreadful, but only in the context of the instrumentation, which by itself is decent enough. The problem is that the two don't really mix well at all to me.
3.0/5
David Bowie - "Sweet Thing": "It's Bowie. C'mon." [2]
4.2/5
Minnie Riperton - "Les Fleurs": Cute, but not too much past that.
3.6/5
Shiina Ringo - "Meisai": It's ever so slightly better than the last track from 50iL. The violin and bass presence in here is quite the treat, even if not necessarily "pleasant" on the former instrument.
3.9/5
The Gromble - "Don't Stand a Chance": Completely disjointed at worst and mesmerizing at best. It goes from 21 Pilots to Radiohead (Brought to you by Ars) in a jarring amount of time and it doesn't help that the vocals are only average at both halves. The production is solid, though, and the "Radiohead" part is fun in a cheesy way.
3.3/5
Fear Before - "Take Cassandra to the End of the World Party" (self-rate): It's not the best track on the album by far, but I wanted to give you guys the most digestable introduction to the album.
3.5/5 (again, don't put this into the database) |

Echoing other users here, it was a decent cut, but I feel like it took a little too long to get to where it was going, and while the payoff was decent, I think I may have been expecting a little more. That said, still a good track, and the sort of thing I can really get into, despite some flaws. |

Yum.

Taking Cassandra to the End of the World Party: Not that familiar to Post-Hardcore, so it's kinda hard to rate. Liked most of it, but the vocals hold it back from being really good. 3.5

03.01.18 | "Easy"
