| Weekly listens- part 1
I've decided to take it upon myself to jot down what I have been listening to each week and what my thoughts on said albums are each week (I will try to refrain from repeats, which will probably still happen anyway). Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical...
This album is incredible both for vox only Inquisition can lay claim to and because of the stellar, ripping riffs that are interlaced with bits of melody. This band has been among my top 5 black metal bands for quite some time, and I highly doubt that will ever change. It's dark, mystical, and almost perplexing upon first listen. To those who haven't jammed this I highly suggest you do (although the droning vocals are indeed quite polarizing, and they're at their strongest off this album.) 4.7/5. | | 2 |  | Of Machines
As If Everything Was Held In Place
I'm incredibly glad I finally came around to this album for my rec list, because it's honestly such a killer album. The vocals are passionate and surge forward like an avalanche, backed by some killer, heavy guitar work and drumming. It has that perfect youthful exuberance without being whiny or obnoxious, which is fuckin' rad to find in modern day post hardcore. 4.5/5. | | 3 |  | AJJ
People Who Can Eat People are the Luckiest People
Major shoutout to bloon. Without his undying praise of this band I am doubtful I would have ever even found them. AJJ as a whole has a very grounded and natural approach to music, creating an honesty in their music that few bands can approach. It's energetic, eclectic, and in its own sort of way, beautiful. It also has one of my favorite lines from any song- "Hope is for presidents and dreams are for people who are sleeping". This whole album radiates with a sense of rebelliousness directed at life itself, and goddamn if we don't all feel that sometimes. 5/5 (yes, it's that damn good). | | 4 |  | Vektor
Outer Isolation
Riffs and shrieks. That is what this album (and their prior album) consists of, and fuck does it riff and shriek. The vocals have this perfect blackened tinge to them, and range from a more traditional black metal rasp to pterodactyl sounds that would make Dani Filth weep. What many people will probably be more interested in however, is the high-octane dive bomb soloing and pummeling riffs that are ever-so resplendent off this record. Really, this album is just a load of fun, and is probably one of the coolest things to come out of the thrash metal scene (or at least, in a very long time). | | 5 |  | Ghost Atlas
All Is In Sync, and There's Nothing Left to Sing
Shoutout to my good ole boy Steakbyrnes for this one (and Erra) cause this owns. A lot of what I said about Of Machines can be applied, albeit to a slightly lesser degree. What Ghost Atlas does here is take the structures and styles of alternative rock and imbue it with the power and passion of well-done post hardcore, making for an album that is both mature and perhaps rebellious at the same time. So The Flies Don't Come
For whatever reason I enjoyed this a fair bit more than his latest outing. In my opinion, this goes a tad less into the "abstract" territory that he explored on "who told you to think?!/!?!", and makes for a record that is slightly hazier and more soothing. This is just a really laid back album to vibe too, and I definitely recommend it to those who are a fan of the more alternative rap scene (yeah yeah it's not Sosa and it's faux white kid bullshit fight me) 3.8/5 | | 7 |  | Dead Can Dance
Within the Realm of a Dying Sun
Major shoutout to hellscythe for rec'ing me this band. I think this will definitely please fans of bands like My Dying Bride, because this is almost undoubtedly where they got at least some of their darkwave/neoclassical influence from. This is somber and harrowing yet oddly elegant and graceful, and seems to plant me into a whole new era of knights and kingdoms through its wondrous use of keys and violins. While I don't love the next 2 albums to come -quite- as much, they re certainly excellent and I would recommend those as well. 4.5/5. | | 8 |  | Fear Before
The Always Open Mouth
Fear Before has an eclectic brand of post-hardcore here (if you can call it that). There are tracks that are grittier and unhinged (Drowning the Hag) and tracks that are almost mellow and...whimsical? Not in the traditional sense, but in a wonkier sort of way rather than a "magical" one. There is no way to really pin down Fear Befores sound, as they mend different genres and moods in a way that is truly their own. However they do it, they do it damn well. 4.3/5. | | 9 |  | mclusky
McLusky Do Dallas
The first song is called Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues. What else could you ask for.
For real, this just zany and fun noise rock/hardcore. It's complete unhinged (although in a more amusing way rather than an enraged sort of way). The vocals are absolutely silly and exaggerated almost to a comedic point, making for an album that is honestly just fun to blast and lose it to. 4.4/5. | | 10 |  | My Dying Bride
The Dreadful Hours
My Dying Bride ups the riff game and mildly tones down the sadness that dripped forth from albums such as "Turn Loose the Swans" and "The Angel and the Dark River" and makes for something that is hefty while still remaining dark and harrowing. It's a -slightly- more traditional doom affair (although hardly anything by them is "traditional" doom) that is both sluggish and powerful. This is probably my 2nd favorite release by them as it showcases their ability to fabricate a dark and hazy atmosphere while still retaining a sense of composition and a knack for hooks. 4.5/5. | |
