2017 Releases Ranked

Just a list with all the releases of 2017 that I somewhat cared about. Top 18 are in order. I will give a description of my rating, favorite songs and the time spent listening to the records (for top 10 at least, also thanks lastfm).
1Brand New
Science Fiction

As a long time Brand New fan this was a pleasent surprise to be honest. I enjoyed how self-aware and reflexive some parts of this album are and also liked the concept of it. 4.5/5
Favorite songs: In the Water; Same Logic / Teeth; No Control
Time spent listening: ~20 hours
2Tigers Jaw
spin

Another surprise for me was 'spin' by Tigers Jaw. In my opinion their best release since their self-titled record in 2008 which is still a go to album for me. Their sound on spin seems to be closer to their old sound than what they did on 'Charmer' which is why I enjoyed this record quite a bit. 4/5
Favorite songs: Escape Plan; June; Guardian
Time spent listening: ~16 hours
3Kreator
Gods of Violence

2017 was the year I finally started listening to more metal and Kreator was my top artist with roughly 750 listens. I started with their earlier stuff (Pleasure to Kill, etc.), but found myself enjoying 'Phantom Antichrist' the most. Therefore I also had to take a look at their latest release, which is, in my opinion, a little step down from their previous record, but still is really solid. 4/5
Favorite songs: World War Now; Totalitarian Terror; Satan Is Real
Time spent listening: ~14 hours
4Julien Baker
Turn Out The Lights

After not being able to get into her previous record I just got into this one around Christmas and I will eventually have to go back and give 'Sprained Ankle' some more listens because I really enjoyed this one and some of the songs really hit home and were very relatable. 4/5
Favorite songs: Turn Out the Lights; Sour Breath; Happy to Be Here
Time spent listening: ~7 hours
5The Wonder Years
Burst and Decay

Since I listened a lot to their last 3 full length recors I was excited about this EP and they did not disappoint me. I thought some of these tracks were really impressive and I did not expect to like this EP this much. 4/5
Favorite songs: You in January stands out because of the feels, but every song really
Time spent listening:~5.5 hours
6Knuckle Puck
Shapeshifter

Didn't really like this one at first, but it really grew on me. Now I think this record is up there with 'Copacetic' and has some of KP's best songs on it. Especially the chorus on 'Wait' is sick. 4/5
Favorite songs: Wait; Want Me Around; Gone
Time spent listening: ~10 hours
7Rise Against
Wolves

Rise Against is probably the band I have listened to the most throughout my entire life and they continue to release records that I can enjoy quite a bit. Although their sound isn't as raw as it used to be their songwriting is still on point for the most part. 3.5/5
Favorite songs: House On Fire; Miracle; Bullshit
Time spent listening: ~11 hours
8I the Mighty
Where the Mind Wants to Go / Where You Let it Go

There seems to be a pattern with I the Mighty records for me. At first I really don't like them and don't listen to them for quite a while after before I decide to give it another go and eventually end up really liking them. Same thing happened with this record, although I still think Connector was a bit better overall. 3.5/5
Favorite songs: Sleepwalker; The Sound of Breathing; Where the Mind Wants To Go
Time spent listening: ~9 hours
9Wage War
Deadweight

A record as heavy as their first one, but with better lyrics that are less cheesy and typical metalcore. Therefore I think this one is their best release yet. Also, excellent bleghs on this one. 3.5/5
Favorite songs: Stitch (and I have to listen to this again and look at the song names zzz)
Time spent listening: ~7 hours
10Falling in Reverse
Coming Home

Guilty pleasure time. Been following Ronnie Radke since 'Dying Is Your Latest Fashion' which was one of the records that got me into heavier music. Although I am not a huge fan of most of FiR's work this far, this record is actually legit good. Songwriting has gotten (for the most part) a lot better and I am excited to see where they go from here, seeing the progress through the last couple records. 3.5/5
Favorite songs: Hanging On; Coming Home; Loser
Time spent listening: ~12 hours
11Milk Teeth
Be Nice

Really solid EP, catchy and relatable. 3.5/5
Favorite songs: Hibernate; Owning Your Okayness
12Greywind
Afterthoughts

Pretty good first record from Greywind which caught my attention because their song 'Afterhroughts' popped up on my spotify weekly mix and really impressed me. 3.5/5
Favorite songs: Desolate; Afterthoughts; Safe Haven
13Silverstein
Dead Reflection

With Silverstein being my most listened to artist of the last 5 years I was kind of disappointed with this one. Especially the vocals and the shouting-uncleans didn't do it for me and some songs seemed like they forced themselves to try and sound 'heavy' which didn't work that good on my opinion. Apart from that the record was pretty solid and I was able to find the sound that I enjoyed throughout Silversteins' whole career, especially on songs like Aquamarine or Secret's Safe. Still overall one of Silversteins' weaker releases. 3/5
Favorite songs: Aquamarine; Secret's Safe
14Paramore
After Laughter

Uhm, well, I kind of expected a record that was relying more on the pop side of things, but I really disliked the singles and the record in the beginning. However, after getting used to the sound I kept liking more and more songs off of it and 'Fake Happy' might actually be my song of the year. 3/5
Favorite songs: Fake Happy; Pool; Tell Me How
15Canadian Softball
Awkward and Depressed

For someone that has listened to post-hardcore, pop-punk and emo for years this is actually a fun listen and has some really catchy and smart written songs on it. Also, as with every Jarrod Alonge medley song, Ohio is for Emo Kids is really nice to listen to. 3/5
Favorite songs: Your Validation; Weebi FM; Ohio Is for Emo Kids
16Pvris
All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell

In my opinion a substantial step down from their previous release. I was missing all the energy and the sudden shifts in speed throughout this record that I loved on their previous one. 2.5/5
Favorite songs: Half; Nola 1
17Arch Enemy
Will to Power

Wasn't able to get into their older stuff (i.e. Wages of Sin) and therefore tried their newer stuff with the old The Agonist vocalist, because I enjoyed their stuff quite a bit. Will to Power seems like a little step down from War Eternal and seems pretty average, although it has its moments. 2.5/5
Favorite songs: First Day in hell; Dreams of Retribution
19My Ticket Home
Unreal

Not sure how to rate this one, because I did expect a really different record. Strangers Only is still one of my favorite metalcore releases and I really like the nu-metal vibes on it, therefore I was expecting something similar in sound, but Unreal has more of a grunge-vibe to it, which I might have to listen more to, to be really able to judge it. Still, very interesting transition in sound.
20August Burns Red
Phantom Anthem

Wasn't really able to get into this one either.
21Code Orange
Forever

Listened to this one a couple of times, but couldn't get into it. I get why this one gets the praise it is getting tho, might just not be for me.
22Adventurer
Sacred Grove

Same stuff to say about this one as for the Wolf & Bear record.
