Kingdok's 2017
Some great new music for this year, although it has been my top album that has dominated my stereo pretty much single handedly... |
| 1 | | Dog Fashion Disco Erotic Massage (Redux)
I always enjoyed the original, despite the piss-poor sound. Re-recording and re-imagining a debut album always sounded potentially iffy, but the final record is an absolute belter, with some of the best production ever.
Best track: Oral Spunk |
| 2 | | Polkadot Cadaver Get Possessed
DFD and PC releasing albums in the same year feels like a dream come true, and with a return to the synth-driven metal that inspired their inception, both albums sound entirely of their individual makers.
Best track: Gasoline Enema, Bend And Light |
| 3 | | Archspire Relentless Mutation
A cosmic leap forward, Archspire dramatically define their style and put down a huge marker in the world of death metal as a whole.
A Dark Horizontal |
| 4 | | Enter Shikari The Spark
ES ease up a little and get personal. Although the second half is clearly superior to the first, it is a very well balanced listen, featuring some of the best lyrics anywhere this year.
Best track: Shinrin-yoku |
| 5 | | Charlatan (UT) Remarkable
Self-proclaimed Scrap Metal Merchants, an album with such diverse tracks shouldn't be as seamlessly cohesive as this.
Best track: Remarkable |
| 6 | | Benighted Necrobreed
Massive return to form after Carnivore. Almost on a par with Asylum Cave!
Mass Grave |
| 7 | | Therapy? Communion (Live At The Union Chapel)
T? released a bunch of acoustic tracks as B_sides back in the Infernal Love Days which were great. Have been waiting years to hear some more acoustic T?, and it was worth the wait.
Best track:Die Laughing |
| 8 | | Tub Ring A Choice of Catastrophes
Another joy of a reunion, this album has grown to be my favourite release of the band.
Best track: Not Before Our Time |
| 9 | | Down I Go Mortals
Anything new by these guys gets me properly excited, anticipating an unlikely full album. Whilst probably not as good as the Gods ep, it goes beautifully alongside it as a double-header.
Best track: Psyche |
| 10 | | The Black Dahlia Murder Nightbringers
Their most balanced album, and I find myself returning to it over any of their others. If only they could vary their formula!?
Best Track: Catacomb Hecatomb |
