Neek'd: OutKast

It's time.

Look, I know this is an eternal sin and a spit in the face of the hip-hop gods, but I honestly for the life of me can't get into this album. Sure, I guess I get why some people dig the spacey production and solid lyrics, but the music is repetitive and the beats are beyond bland. If those two things can't hook me into the song, the lyrics can't capture my attention or save the music for me. I guess that nothing I look for in hip-hop can be found here, and that's really all I can say.

Idlewild

Yeah this was definitely a bit of a mess, but it's enjoyable in its own right. The mash-up of genres here is a lot of fun even though it isn't pulled off quite as well as it should have been, and it runs far too long while featuring a variety of tiresome tracks like "Hollywood Divorce" (as well as a plethora of pretentious interludes). That being said, songs like "PJ & Rooster," the closer, and the immensely listenable Janelle Monae vehicle (where she shows up Andre 3000 in his own song) "Call the Law" make this album more enjoyable than not.

Yeah this was a jam. Definitely not my favorite hip-hop album by a long shot, but it was a lot of fun and showed potential for Andre and Big Boi both as clever rappers and talented musicians. There's a solid amount of variety and wit to the whole experience, with funky beats and engaging live instrumentation. It's not quite as revolutionary or interesting as their later stuff, but it's just really damn likable.

This is where OutKast really hit their stride for me, sculpting an extremely vivid and atmospheric hip-hop album that utilizes a far greater emphasis on musicality compared to their previous albums. Weak moments like the chorus of "Mamacita" (which sounds like it belongs on a mid-tier Snoop album) are easily overshadowed by brilliant songs like the aggressive but melodic "Da Art of Storytellin' (Pt. 2)" and the epic, expansive, and mind-boggling "Liberation." This is much more my style.

Stankonia

Turning up the speed and accessibility, Stankonia could have easily been a major miscalculation for OutKast but managed to be their greatest moment up to that point. Popular tracks like "B.O.B." and "Ms. Jackson" are endlessly catchy and fun while still be incredible acts of unique musicianship. I personally enjoy more aggressive and musically present hip-hop, so this really hit the spot for me.

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

Easily one of my favorite hip-hop albums, it seems like all that Andre and Big Boi needed to do their best was simply get out of each other's way. Surprisingly enough I prefer Big Boi's Speakerboxx, featuring blistering but highly creative hip-hop cuts like "Bust" and "The Rooster." On the other side of the hand is Andre's The Love Below is much poppier but also much more experimental constant blend of several genres. If they were separated, they would simply have been their two best albums, but together they compare and contrast to create something better than they would've been apart.
