| | Neek's First Listen: The Killers' "Wonderful(x2)" | | 1 | | The Killers Wonderful Wonderful
Wonderful, Wonderful:
I remember so little about this as a single other than I really liked it so here we go. Super dark and atmospheric so far. Not sure if Flowers’ voice fits the vibe so much, but he at least doesn’t sound like a drunken cowboy this time around. This is a really unique sound, for them at least. It’s kinda directionless and aimless but in very appealing ways. That string sounding thing is rad as hell. Yeah this is really deep and thick sounding, definitely has a gothic vibe that I wasn’t expecting from this album. It definitely justifies it length.

The Man:
I know people really didn’t like this one but I remain thinking it’s pretty rad. Sure, it’s borderline disco with the funky bassline and pounding beat, but it’s good fun honestly. It’s strange how different sounding this is from the first but still it fits surprisingly well next to it. It could’ve just been a boring simple pop song, but it genuinely feels like there was a lot of thought and time put into it. That bridge is cool as hell too. The guitar is really neat sounding on this cut too. I’m definitely impressed with the album so far.

Rut:
Those quiet vocals sound so processed, almost like something you’d hear on a fun. album. This is sounding scarily like something you might find on Battle Born, but we’ll see where it’s heading. I really like this instrumental portion though, I think it might be his vocals that are bothering me here. On a whole it sounds like something you’d hear on the radio in the 80s, except not as memorable. Ugh, everytime they let the music shine though it sounds so nice. The group vocals near the end sound like Peter Gabriel. LOL my brother’s in the room and he just quipped “This sounds like one of those Peter Gabriel songs you would skip when it comes on.” Still, some lovely music here. Egh, conflicted.

Life to Come:
Brandon, the more you sound like Battle Born, the less I like you okay? Please don’t do this anymore. My brother just laughed at the line “Just dropkick the shame.” OMFG he said it again. This is actually kinda promising, sounds like it’s building to an emotional 80s prom movie scene climax. Oops, yeah, that’s definitely what the chorus was. Well, what it’s doing it’s doing well. Getting a bit of a U2 vibe tbh. I will give Flowers some credit, he’s doing pretty well vocally here, he sounds a lot more confident and less timid, much more Sam’s Town than Battle Born, even when he threatens to dip into that Americana shit. Nice guitar/synth break. Okay, so my preemptive classification of this album is Disco-Americana. “He needs to stop saying “Just dropkick the shame” though.

Run for Cover:
This albums sounds like an 80s musical, and this song sounds like the #1 pop hit from it. Not gonna lie, I really like it though. It’s a bit too cheesy and derivative of the 80s for its own good, but it’s a very solid track. This bridge is a little much, ooooooooh I like that build from the bridge to the chorus a lot though, that was cool. I can just imagine some teenager running through a dark alleyway while Flowers snaps in time in some far off bar with the love interest waiting for him to come sweep her off her feet.

Tyson vs Douglas
Some artsy opening, I’ll say that. Song isn’t really doing much else in it’s first minute though. Just a generic synth riff and Flowers singing softly. It’s a bit funky but nothing really mind-blowing so far. Okay, something about that chorus is really likable to me though. This albums kinda cool because it IS the 80s, but with a more modern vibe and production. I really do like the marriage of the instrumentation with the vocals and how everything plays off of each other. This bridge is great, aight. Man I wish these songs weren’t so much fun, it’s impossible not to like them. Unless you’re butcher probably.

Some Kind of Love:
Alright, some ambience, some solid vocals, I’m liking the slow growth of this so far. It’s easygoing but sounds like it’s moving towards a purposeful conclusion, me gusta mucho so far. Sounds a little Coldplay-y actually, in a good way. It’s got this spacey, emotional yet detached vibe. Idk, good adjectives and shit. That guitar tone is VERY Coldplay. Sounds like some Viva la Vida shit. Yeah okay this is definitely one of my favorites so far, idk it just hits that spot. Those kid vocals are a bit weird though. Wish it ended more on a bang… might grow off me.

Out of My Mind:
Okay, cool sound I’ll give it that. I hate how every song starts with maybe 20-30 seconds of an interesting instrumental and then Brandon starts singing and then the music flattens. Ughhhhhh that chorus is lame and the verses aren’t interesting at all. The synth is lame too. I’ll admit that his vocals work surprisingly well against the rest though. UGH that synth got wayyyy too high. I’m not used to his vocals being the strongest part of a Killers song, but lo and behold.

The Calling:
Omg that narration was bad. Oh no, he’s doing the drunken cowboy thing. I like western guitar sound though… hopefully this smooths out. God that instrumentation is cool man. Okay, his vocals are getting a bit less showy, starting to really enjoy this. Yeah okay I can get into this alright, it’s definitely a unique sound. That funky bass is funky. Yes okay you convinced me.

Have All the Songs Been Written?
We better hope not. Man maybe this’ll be one of those really mind-blowingly good closers like Goodnight, Travel Well. Probably not though. I think this is about on par with Battle Born for me on first listen, I really need to reevaluate that album though, it’s been years. Okay well this song is doing the same thing over and over again so yeah. It’s nice but kinda eh. Yeah this didn’t really go anyway but it was pretty good I guess. Just a really lame closer.
