09.08.17 | I'm really hoping that this season breaks the cycle for BoJack, but if it does then I don't really know how the show goes on. It seemed pretty clear that, at the end of last season, something had to change. He was literally at the rock bottom. I don't know if I can stomach watching it get much worse than that. But, if he improves, then the show has no reason to continue on. Any rumors that this is the last season? |

09.09.17 | finished this just now. tbh episode for episode this was very strong in terms of concept but a little weaker as an overall story than in previous years - they sort of got bored with the Mr Peanutbutter as governor storyline halfway through and it really shows, while half the episodes have Hollyhock as an essential part and then the other half she's just not even there and its jarring and inconsistent

Deathconscious
09.09.17 | "i was super excited but the whole of s4 came off to me as an average sitcom with overambitious sub-plots and sentimental, predictable drama"
thats the whole show. They want to be that show with the heavy drinking depressed character that gives you the feels but it just comes off as contrived. And the humor is average sitcom humor. Its just an average sitcom dressed up as something more profound.
Also, how am i supposed to feel bad or root for a character who is so annoying and unlikable. |

09.09.17 | "I have literally no idea what part of the show one could call predictable"
Hmm, you may be right. I just found myself consistently disappointed with the show's heavy-handed, dramatic-music + 'profound quote about human suffering' trick it keeps playing. Thought Diane's 'tired of squinting' line was a straight-up cringe, as well as explaining away all of bea's nastiness through a familiar, simple backstory. if this season was supposed to be about beatrice, couldn't they have devoted more time to developing her character beyond 'suppressed childhood -> bad marriage mother' archetype? it just seems like a wildly unfocused character study at this point with too much on its mind and a slipping grip on humor. or maybe i've just become tired with the show itself and its doing the same thing it always has. |
Flugmorph
09.09.17 | bea's nastiness didnt get explained away. it was just shown where she came from. |
theacademy
09.09.17 | if youre hung up on her backstory then youre missing the point dude... |

09.09.17 | its contextual only, she doesnt have (or need) an arc |
hesperus
09.09.17 | just finished the season, and while there were some fantastic high points (2, 6, 9, 11), there were enough weaknesses that i can't say it was as good as s3 or even s2. i was especially disappointed with how they handled diane and mr. peanutbutter's relationship. i'd be down with their relationship not working out in the end ("i'm so tired of squinting" is a great heartbreaking line), but it just seemed like the show turned them into a completely different couple in order to get there. |
wwf
09.09.17 | I thought Diane and Mr. PB were totally in character and were one of the best parts of the show, like always |
Deathconscious
09.09.17 | Diane has the least personality of everyone in the show. |
hesperus
09.09.17 | i think it was the last scene of the fracking episode that really threw me off. i already hate the whole angry-couple-fights-and-then-starts-making-out/fucking trope, but i admit it can work with the right characters and the right setup. with diane and mr. peanutbutter, it wasn't funny or erotic, it was just cruel and uncomfortable |
wwf
09.09.17 | I believed it. Diane was fucking with the one thing that's important to him and its the thing she cares most about as well, for different reasons |
hesperus
09.09.17 | and that's part of what i didn't get. i could guess that he wanted to be governor because he likes to be liked by everyone, but the show never established that it was as important to him as HSACWDTKDTKTLFO was. and later, they pretty much confirm that it wasn't. but even so, Diane's "drop out or i'll publish this article about how shitty you are" ultimatum was unusually mean-spirited for her. so for me, it was two great characters doing shitty things to each other for reasons i couldn't grasp |
Deathconscious
09.09.17 | Diane doesnt seem compatible with these more out-there characters at all. Seems forced as fuck. |
Toad
09.09.17 | "its contextual only, she doesnt have (or need) an arc"
It's not that I think she needs to be a dynamic character (most of the characters in the show aren't) but it doesn't make sense to have her be a flat, walking cliche and place her narrative in the episode slot which has become the show's emotional gut punch calling card
Also, the quirky/non-LA locations this season just don't seem nearly as tangible and intriguing as the have in the past (fantasy Maine, New Mexico, Labrador Peninsula, the underwater city)
Also found the clown dentistry thing annoying and non-humorous. Probably the least funny thing that's ever happened in the Todd vicinity |
Flugmorph
09.09.17 | u just hate on clows man
but srsly yeah they were pretty annoying
i liked the zombie dentist clowns tho. |
wwf
09.09.17 | honestly Todd's season-long shenanigans are rarely particularly funny to me even though they get some good laughs sometimes
'"drop out or i'll publish this article about how shitty you are" ultimatum was unusually mean-spirited for her.'
he was placing himself in front of societal progress in Diane's eyes, which is literally the most important thing to her. she's had to choose between Mr. PB and her own integrity before and she made the exact same decision then too |
wwf
09.09.17 | it's also worth mentioning that Diane isn't a particularly great person, she's often selfish and self-destructive and self-important and all those other self- words
she's probably the most considerate character of the show, but she's not above being shitty |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy

wwf
09.10.17 | Why, I have half a mind |
Rowan5215
09.10.17 | damn Toad what part of episode 11 was either familiar or simple in literally any way |
Toad
09.10.17 | Well we got like no more information about Bea's marriage that we didn't have from earlier scenes: bojack is a mistake, his father is alcoholic and a frustrated author, and the frustrations of the family are taken out on him. So all of that is familiar yet we get more time on it without seemingly any purpose. The rest of the information we have is pretty much presented already in ep 2. So Ep 11 is like a stylzed rehash that handles memory and trauma but the way it does so is far less effective than either ep 11 of seasons 1 or 3, and certainly less engaging than the meditation offered on dementia/memory loss in film on the topic like It's such. Beautiful day or endless sunshine. So I guess it just felt familiar, kinda pointless plotwise, and stylistically inferior to me. Beautiful animation though, I'll give it that |
wwf
09.10.17 | There was new stuff right
Like the henrietta reveal |
Toad
09.10.17 | Yeah, that's true. I never really felt invested in hollyhocks character I guess, which might be why I didn't find this season very emotionally impactful. Not really invested in any of the characters any more it seems like. I miss the original drama arcs with PC and bojack, Diane and bojack, etc where the past and present were always at war. Now we're left with peanut butter and Diane whose relationship was much more interesting during s2 + 3. The belle-room scene feels like a weaker version of the much more devastating "I'm not happy" next to the jello pool in s2. Idk, I don't know why this season didn't work for me bc everyone else seems to love it |
Danred97
09.10.17 | Dear lord episodes 2, 6, and 11 were fucking brutal. I do think S3 was better, but this season was still really great. I also really liked it ending with bojack smiling. After all the shit that has happened, it was nice to see it ending on a somewhat happy note. |
wwf
09.10.17 | @Toad: the cordovia plot in general is sort of my favorite thing ever so yeah I agree the Diane stuff in this season wasn't quite that level but it was still good |
Toad
09.10.17 | Yeah I think the season is objectively pretty strong. My personal connection just seems weaker |
Rowan5215
09.10.17 | I think you can say pretty objectively this is the most creative season in terms of animation - the stuff during Bojack's self-loathing inner monologue was especially powerful and episodes 2 and 11 have a beauty to them that really makes them something else. as far as writing, it just doesn't hang together as well as it should - the Hollyhock and Princess Carolyn subplots I both loved, but the way episodes alternated between them started to feel choppy and weird, whereas the Todd and Mr Peanutbutter stuff honestly got pretty sloppy and lazy towards the end - I remember getting to the last episode thinking what about Emily? why is the show forcing Todd and this random new girl into a thing? where was the payoff for the clown dentist joke? why did the show spend so much time setting up the governor race and then just wave it all away in episode 10 with no effort? etc. etc. it's a shame because the individual moments are perhaps the finest the show's ever done, but the overall effect isn't quite there
2 > 3 > 4 > 1 tbh |
Ryus
09.10.17 | the end of episode 9 was brilliant. i was wondering why the fuck they would go with such a stupid plotline at first with the "future descendent" thing but they actually managed to surprise me there
also yeah todd's clown thing was not entertaining. worst season for todd definitely |
Ryus
09.10.17 | agreed rowan, the writing felt super uneven. at certain points it was extremely clever, but in terms of actual plot it seems like they made the wrong decision with a bunch of characters here, besides bojack/hollyhock/princess carolyn |
Ryus
09.10.17 | this was maybe princess carolyn's best season though |
Rowan5215
09.10.17 | absolutely one hundred percent PC's best season overall, I thought they would never top Best Thing That Ever Happened but goddamn did they top it
it's a shame, they were in a position to go somewhere really powerful with the asexual storyline but they just really did not go anywhere with it. ah well |
Ryus
09.10.17 | yeah todd was useless for much of this season unfortunately |

09.10.17 | just finished and there's no dip in quality for me |
wwf
09.10.17 | They dont get much emotion out of todd in general, besides season 3. But anyway dont skip all of season 1, the last half is amazing. First few episodes you prob can skip tho |
wwf
09.10.17 | Anyway they didn't really need to explore Todd deeply in this season. He'll still be asexual next season |
Rowan5215
09.10.17 | I wasn't really looking for Todd to randomly become the emotional centre of the show or anything. I just wanted him to have a better storyline that didn't revolve around one joke (clown dentists lol he thinks its funny but its scary get it?) being re-iterated like 10 times. also, as an ace myself, it would have been nice to get at least some material about how it affects a person's life tbh |
wwf
09.10.17 | Cool, fair enough. And to be fair, Todd's business ventures didnt even sort of have the payoff they did last year
But Im sure the show won't forget about him being asexual, it'll definitely inform his character a bit going on. Just like the happy ending of this season likely won't result in a total upswing in Bojack's quality of life |
zaruyache
09.10.17 | just finished Ep 11 and I'm a wreck. why does this talk horse cartoon do this to me |
verdant
09.10.17 | yeah this show is fucking incredible and it's promising that RBW has already stated that they've had enough of the whole 'bojack-fucks-up-then-begs-for-forgiveness' type deal. it's exciting to see where the show will take his character, with that in mind. also i feel like that last scene was the perfect counterpoint to S3's final sequence; equally as profound and emotional, but for opposite reasons (depressed and lonely bojack vs hopeful bojack who realises there are people around him that are willing to help him get better). |
zaruyache
09.10.17 | The Tod-centric episodes I thought weren't enjoyable but Bojack's story was great. It's like all the jokey storylines are just trolls so the deeper eps hit harder. |
matbla00
09.10.17 | Well, I did not know that bojack has good soundtrack (seen 3eps), but the very show is rather poor and definitely overhyped. |
Ryus
09.10.17 | if you've only seen the first three episodes of the first season, then yeah you're not gonna enjoy the show so much. it realllyyy picks up and changes tone |

butcherboy
09.11.17 | the duet was perfection.. episode was better constructed than most dramatic films.. |
Rowan5215
09.11.17 | I've already seen it all zaru, all I'm saying is I was fully expecting to get the feels going on but I was not expecting to be hit with a moment like that... idk how to explain it, the only thing that's even close from this show is the moment where the neon balloon floats past Charlotte and leads her onto the boat in Escape from LA. just that untouchable feeling that you're watching something truly poetic and wonderful despite all the dark shit surrounding it. dunno how better to say it |
Mister Twister
09.12.17 | what's with this show and episode 11s being fucking devastating
anyways, season 4 brought about that same familiar feeling of everybody sucks that I've come to love the show for, so I can't complain |
VaxXi
09.12.17 | Episode 11 in season 1 and episode 11 in season 4 were written by the same writer - her name is Kate Purdy and she seems to have a thing for super heavy visual storytelling + introspective time skipping to tell a sad story. It works. |
Rowan5215
09.12.17 | she also gave us "Best Thing That Ever Happened" which was easily the season 3 highlight for me. definitely the show's best writer with Joe Lawson (Escape from LA and Stop the Presses) a close second |

09.12.17 | episode ratings now that I've given it two full watches:
See Mr Peanutbutter Run 6/10 - grew on me on a second watch, it's a fun episode well-defined by the absence of Bojack, but season openers are not this show's strong suit
The Old Sugarman Place 10/10 - best episode of the entire show
Todd Episode 7/10 - always good to give Aaron Paul more to do, but the pacing is way too quick for this to fully work to me (the Channing Tatum bit is spectacular tho)
Commence Fracking 5/10 - the Hollyhock stuff is great, the ending sex scene is just embarrassing to watch really
Thoughts and Prayers 8/10 - very fun episode, feels like a less full-on Brrap Brrap Pew Pew but still enjoy it a lot
Stupid Piece of Shit 9/10 - some of Will Arnett's best work on the whole show here
Underground 3/10 - skipped this on rewatch and will continue to do so
The Judge 6/10 - the booty judging stuff is pretty funny, but the governor storyline completely runs out of whatever steam it had here
Ruthie 9/10 - would be a perfect 10 except How I Met Your Mother did the exact same twist so I saw it coming from the start. Amy Sedaris is fantastic
cali lifestyle 8/10 - the structure of this episode is just cruel beginning with that opening. solid stuff but it's the only time I've wanted Todd to just completely fuck off because the clown dentist storyline is complete dead air and the rest is so good
Time's Arrow 10/10 - if the animation team or Purdy don't win an award for this I will fucking puke
What Time Is It 8/10 - RBW is never gonna be the best writer on his own show, that's often how it goes, but the jokes land and the final few minutes are powerful, much the same as the S3 closer really
inconsistent season but damn the good stuff is good |

09.13.17 | Outstanding season. I loved the first episode, but I love Peanutbutter so I might be the wrong person do judge. Episode 9 and all of the subplot with Princess Caroline had me in tears, I hope Ralph comes back at some point, and I liked Judah. I'm also glad that trying to do the right thing had some positive results for Bojack, this show is shaping up to be my favorite cartoon series ever! |
kris.
09.14.17 | yeah, i'm really hoping judah makes a return only because i have a weirdly deep love for diedrich bader. |
RadicalEd
09.14.17 | The 4th seasons suffers a bit from the fact that Bojack has pushed the other main Characters out of his life so much. I feel like Princess Caroline's story is easily strong enough to justify it's running time (also she at least has somewhat of a meaningful relation to Bojack still) but Diane/Mr. Peanutbutter and Todd basically have nothing to do with Bojack most of the time and therfore needed more independet story lines. And especially the Mr. Peanutbutter runs for governor storyline and the Todd Clown-Dentist storyline just kinda start nowhere, go nowhere and except for a few laughs don't even really entertain.
All the stuff that really focused on Bojack was as good, if not better than anything in the Seasons 1-3. |

09.15.17 | they missed a force majeure joke opportunity in ep 1 :( |
artiswar
09.15.17 | This season was weaker than the others for me but not because the writing was worse but because where the characters are in their lives and in relation to each other. As RadicalEd said, many plot lines feel isolated and a bit meaningless. Still going to rewatch the season soon because its still fucking brilliant.
At first I thought episode 2 was a little overhyped but now I think I'm coming around to it being the best episode of the season. |
Toad
09.15.17 | i'd agree. the most intriguing relationships - PC & bojack, charlotte & bojack, todd & bojack - are sidelined. the show is left much weaker without them. |
artiswar
09.15.17 | I feel like having Todd and Bojack separated for a whole season was very necessary though. Same goes with PC really. As for Charlotte, that arc is done (for now). It all felt very organic but yeah, a lot of the relationship pazazz was missing. |
Toad
09.15.17 | the show certainly set itself up for a difficult season by cutting off toxic relationships, but i just don't think it was compensated for by other elements/storylines. so pretty much in agreement with your sentiments |
ArsMoriendi
09.15.17 | I don't know, the development of Bea was amazing, also that twist ending was pulled off well. It was interesting to see PC's relationship with Todd honestly |
artiswar
09.15.17 | I do think almost the entire Bojack storyline (isolated though it was) was fucking brilliant. Also the PC storyline actually benefitted from the isolation. I hate it when she jumps back into bed with Bojack --literally and figuratively-- despite him taking her for granted all the time. |
VaxXi
09.15.17 | The BoJack and PC storylines were pretty connected thematically, which I liked. Yeah, its unfortunate that some other character storylines fell a bit to the wayside, but this season didn't feel as crowded/rushed like season 3 just because there was really only two stories being focused on. |

09.15.17 | The part where Hollyhock asks Bojack if the shitty voices in your head are something you grow out of, and then the last scene of the season, their ending conversation. Just a few tears, but both parts just took me super fucking off guard and hit me like a truck for some reason. |
artiswar
09.15.17 | yeah the voices part was both amazing and upsetting |
deathschool
09.15.17 | It's just amazing how well it's framed to where in that moment, you relate to both of those characters, and they relate to each other, but in a way that they aren't even allowed to understand, and it's also a subject that most television shows seem to want to shy away from, but in that moment you're like "why the fuck don't people talk about this more? It's obviously common as shit." But at the same time you're also like: Wait, fuck. They are going to avoid it too. You just get this tiny moment, and then it's gone. |

stupid piece of shit best episode of the season fo sho
Unpopular opinion but I was never a huge fan of the diane/pb marriage because I found diane's attraction to him kinda forced so I'm sorta kinda glad it ended
Was also glad to finally see bojack somewhat happy, gave me a huge grin |
artiswar
12.14.18 | Was just rewatching Stupid Piece Of Shit and some stuff actually hit me way harder this time around. Namely, Beatrice caring for the doll. She had to get DEMENTIA to realize that things would have been better if she had shown Bojack love. And of course, the way he tortures and humiliates her in response is super fucked up, but when you take in that she's experiencing a profound breakthrough in her own mind even while she's losing her mind like her mother... I just found that scene even more hard-hitting and a brilliant prelude to Time's Arrow. And of course that last chilling scene with Bojack and Hollyhock to round it out. Fucking hell, that episode is a masterpiece. |
