The National studio albums ranked (SWB included)
The National have become one of their favorite bands ever since I first discovered them, so I dug into their 7 studio albums and ranked them. The only ones I can do without are their first two albums, but they are pretty good as well.
Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers
Of the 5 masterpieces the band have created, this is the one I feel is the most overrated, and is my least favorite of them. But it's still an excellent record.
The band's breakthrough and deservedly so.
Sleep Well Beast
The latest album from them. I may be overranking this a bit over Alligator, or underranking this behind Trouble Will Find Me. This it is my AOTY so far and will likely continue to be even after 2017 ends. On first listen, I found almost every track to be excellent. ("Empire Line" is the only one I can do without, but it's a pretty good track still) Highlights include "Day I Die", "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness", "Carin at the Liquor Store", "Nobody Else Will Be There", "Dark Side of the Gym" and "Walk It Back". I'll do a ranking of the album soon.
Trouble Will Find Me
I know this is a little too high for some people, but this record is one I hold in high regard, since it was the first National record I heard. The song delivers some of my favorite songs from them like "Pink Rabbits", "I Need My Girl" and "Graceless". With that said, it's not my favorite from them and that honor goes to...
A near perfect album and a masterpiece. Nearly every song (save "Lemonworld") is great to excellent. Highlights include "Sorrow", "Runaway", "Conversation 16" and "Bloodbuzz Ohio". Definitely a must listen.
save Lemonworld
how dare you put 7 there
Lemonworld is top 3 on that album
6 is 7 to the power of 10,000,000
Also, did I mention this list is 'tooooo sooooooooon'
Nah, there were much better tracks on High Violet imo. Bloodbuzz, Conversation, Sorrow, England, Runaway, Terrible Love and Vanderlyle were all better than Lemonworld.
The only ones that it'd say are not set in stone are #2 and #3 (I now feel that SWB > Alligator, and I believe that will remain over time)
I still think that self-titled was better than Sad Songs, but that's a minority opinion.
Terrible Love might have a shout at being better than Lemonworld, but I'll be damned if Lemonworld doesn't have some of the best National verses of all time.
I actually think the self titled is great and wish I could put it higher but it just goes to show how strong their discog is.
actually some of the best National stuff they do with Bob Weir and the Grateful dead covers they did on Day of the Dead
band is seriously the worst.
Lemonworld is perfect though.
My top 4: Boxer, TWFM, HV and SWB
Okay good ranking but Terrible Love is the best song on HV
7 is substantially better than 6. SWB doesn't touch the previous 4 records for me.
F the haters Lemonworld is dope
Also I find it odd how many people on this site think TWFM is their best or second best. Almost the entire album are just really soft ballads
Yeahh, don't "save 'Lemonworld'" me. That song is amazing and I can't understand why it never took off more as a fan favorite.
Rankings are crazy too btw, but I can't judge, because The National are such quality that I feel you can rearrange 5-1 anyway you like and be okay, but Sad Songs beneath self titled? I like your stray from the norm, but I just can't digest that as truth
6 is obv the worst, even berninger said so.
Still surprised at some of the backlash of Sleep Well Beast. I didn't know what I expected from a new National LP but a mixture of some of their darkest, most melancholic, and electronic, work mixed with some of their most raucous, rocking stuff since Sad Songs/Alligator together would have certainly have made me excited if I hadn't listened yet.. awesome album
What backlash tho ?
