Neek's First Listen: Brand New's "Science Fiction"

Holy fuckin' shit
1Brand New
Science Fiction

Lit Me Up:
Well, that’s atmospheric as fuck. Imagining a Daisy-like guitar smash in after this dialogue stuff. This is unlike anything that I was expecting — the ambience is so thick and interesting, he almost sounds like Chris Martin on this (not in a bad way). Okay, well this is borderline orgasmic, I’m already completely in love with this album and the first song isn’t even over. I can see why they spent so fucking long on this, from what I can tell it’s absolutely worth it. Alright, well this is gorgeous and I’m at a loss for words so unless something insane happens I’m just gonna leave it and slap a score on it.

Can’t Get It Out:
Well this is a bit more in line with their usual sound, but those… vocal? effects are just damn strange. The guitars and drums on the chorus make this sound like it could be on a demented version of Deja Entendu. Not liking this one as much as the last one, if only because it isn’t as immediate and unexpected. It’s still great if we’re being honest, it’s just such a power and an assured sound to it, I can see it growing on me in the future.

Waste:
This is a cool sound, like a strange ethereal guitar. I’m starting to see some influence from songs like “Out of Range” and “Sealed to Me” in that strange out-of-place instrumentation and slower-but-stranger focus. The instrumental almost sounds western in some ways, evoking the feeling of being lost in a barren landscape. This one is gorgeous too, hot damn. If this keeps up it might even be better than The Devil and God, didn’t ever think I’d be saying that. This bridge is priceless, idk how they’re creating this atmospheres but I could get lost in this sound forever, fuck.

Could Never Be Heaven:
Alright, much more low-key and less oppressive than the previous songs. He’s got an almost folky quality to his voice, which the added guitars seem to be building on quietly. It’d be great if they kept it in their pants and kept this vibe throughout the song, I hope they do. My god, this is so pretty holy shit. I still can’t get over that I’m listening to new Brand New today, fuck. Lovely song, props for keeping it chill throughout.

Same Logic/Teeth:
This dialogue is very unnerving, definitely keeping in line with the title of the album. I wonder if its from a real sci-fi film? You know, I’m really digging the sound of the guitar on this album overall. I sounds like its ancient, pervasive, its just bleeding into every space of sound on this track. How is this so fucking good? These songs are all so strange and unnerving but beautiful at the same time. Screaming! Oh shit the guitar sounded pissed for a second there. There’s so much tension in this, like every instrument is fighting for attention in the best, more listenable way possible. Really liking all the different vocal dubs and effects in this, it keeps it diverse and unexpected. This song is ridiculously good, might be my favorite so far actually. Oooooooh the beeps and boops under that guitar and heavenly. And the heaviness. And now the softness. Holy shit I can never see what’s coming, I forgot what that was like to this extent.

Really pretty acoustic stuff, but I guess that was more of an interlude? On to the rest I guess, some pounding drums and those damn beautiful guitars. Getting a slower, sort of “Limousine” vibe form this, except less depressing. Some creepy ass lyrics tho. This is the first time the old movie lines are part of the music, and its done to a very cool effect here. I love how Brand New this album sounds, but it still sounds like nothing they’ve really done before. I suppose it’s closest to Devil and God, except with the deeper and thicker sound of Daisy. Maybe a little Deja here and there, but not really. Man idk what to do with this song, it’s so tense but chill at the same time, those western guitars are back with a venge-HOLY SHIT WHT’S GOING ON? The gates of hell are opened apparently. This song is amazing too, jesus. I can only hope the second half of the album is as consistent as this one.

Out of Mana:
Interesting name, we gonna be building off some biblical references this time around? Love that riff, goddamn. Probably the first actual RIFF to really stand out tbh that isn’t just a strange part of the atmosphere. I love the vibe of this one, it’s probably the most immediate song aside from the second on, but this one fits a lot more in the style of the album. It’s kinda like a culmination of everything that’s been going on so far on here. VERY aggressive guitar solo, damn. I feel like the guitar expresses more emotion on these songs than Lacey’s vocals if we’re being honest here, and that’s no insult to Lacey. I haven’t heard guitars so expressive and integral to an album’s sound in a very long time.

In the Water:
Oh damn, that’s a pretty low-fi soon. Probably just an atmospheric intro, especially looking at the massive length of this song, interested to see how they tie this in, I like the mood of it a lot. A guitar explosion would be too expected, and it’s so damn pretty. Okay, moving on I guess lol that was a little abrupt but I really like this next sound too. This whole album has had this strange western sound to it, far more than any science-fiction sound in my mind. It’s almost desert rock in some ways.

Okay you all know how much I’ve been loving this album so far, but I feel like we really need something to change a bit here, the last couple songs were a bit straightforward so we need more of a fluctuation. That goddamn country-esque chorus is a good start, hot fuck. Let’s see what this song can do with it’s length. Is that an organ in the chorus too? There’s so many fuckin layers to this music, jesus. Loving that slow-down and subsequent guitar licks. Such an atmospheric track, shit. I feel like I shouldn’t be liking these songs this much but I can’t help it.

Desert:
Great reference to Daisy in that old dude saying the “I know about you but I never get tired of it” line. Oh damn this is really creepy. Is this just gonna be a strange interlude? Guess not, moving on. There’s a lot of false starts on here! It’s okay because they just go on into even better sounding things. Unique track here, very simple sounding compared to the complexity of before, I think it’s just the change of pace this album needed. Lyrics are very overtly important here, and they aren’t usually the first thing I notice at all. Those background vocals are a bit, on the nose, not sure how I feel about them. Man idk what to say about this but it’s nice as hell and I dig it.

No Control:
Okay, we’re nearing the end here. Ooooooh liking the sound of this, very similar to some of their older stuff actually, but with more distortion on guitar during the chorus. It’s got a vague Deja sound but at the same time it sounds nothing like that, it’s alternately gorgeous and heavy, usually both. Yeah, definitely loving this one no doubt about it.

Oh shit, something’s coming. Haven’t heard a fade in that menacing in a while. Oh shit was that not a song? Just an intro? What’s this weird shit goin’ on? Okay I’m creeped out now you can get back to the music please holy fuck. Okay thank you, digging the funky riff good sir. That’s certainly different, you could keep doing that for the rest of the song and I’d be happy. OH FUCK didn’t expect that chorus. It’s like… pop-gospel-metal-rock? Idfk it’s gorgeous and this song has got to be the strangest one yet, probably one of my favorites. That chorus is just delicious, foot-stompin’ beauty, goddamn. So yeah if this last song is as good as the rest of the album, I’ll be happy to slap a 5 on this tbh. Great bridge as always. Oh god this song is sexy, fuck me now. Wow. 9.5-/10

Batter Up:
Oh no the feels are coming, I can feel them. This is really nice, great way to start your closer/last song on the album/maybe last song ever as a band? I feel like this song was holding the emotional core that was missing from the rest of the album. It’s so goddamn pretty I just want to give them a hug and make them feel better. If it’s just this sadness for 8 minutes I can live with that. But those pounding drums are suggesting otherwise. Nah, it’s keeping it chill, just steadily growing throughout. I just audibly groaned at that pause and slight guitar chime, this hurts my heart it’s just so sad and lovely.

What have we done as a species to deserve something so beautiful as this? All we did was ridicule them for their strange release plan and say all their new singles were ass when we knew deep down that at least Mene was pretty damn good. They make me feel ashamed for ever doubting them, this has got to be the best album they’ve ever released. Kudos to them for sticking with this sound for the whole song, I never want it to end. This could be 20 minutes long and it would still be near-perfect. I have no idea what those voices were about or if they really added anything other than mood to the album, but goddamn that was fucking perfect.
Fuck it, 9.5+/10.
