I dunno who's gonna survive the eventual slaughter that's gonna go down, but I hope Sy ends up gutting Varga like a goddamn fish. Also hoping Meemo gets more screentime cause there's something awesome about a goon that listens to music during the most tense times.

Season 1 had one of the best TV villains ever tho. 3 is really good, but it will end up being the weakest of the 3 most likely. If the show continues with more seasons they need to change something up, this formula and tone will get old soon imo, but that might be cause I'm also watching the similar Better Call Saul as well.

Also was a fun "everything happened exactly has it was told" poke. @anarchistfish - this starts off slower, but the build up is awesome. I really liked the first few episodes tbh. The characters are just so damn good. @TalonsOfFire - Fucking right. Although, the creator said that this may be the last season of Fargo which I am honestly OK with. I'd rather have 3 near perfect seasons than a shit ton of endless murder stories in Minnesota and dragging it out. Also agreed on BCS

Papa Universe 06.01.17	It's hilarious that with how crazy the overall plot of the series is, the creators managed to top it off with something so off-the-wall like aliens. They just sort of threw it in as if to say "There, accept it." It works like a simple fact and nobody makes that big of a deal out of it either. Just goes to show you that this is really a series where literally anything can happen. Someone introduced like a main character can turn out to be the real villain, or be killed off a few moments later, or aliens directly cause the final outcome of the whole story.

Papa Universe 06.01.17	Admittedly, Malvo is indeed a bold plotline, however, creating a world so reliant on logic and continuation and then incorporating aliens as easily as that with them seemingly fitting the overall narrative (at least for me) and making you simply "deal" with the fact that it is a thing, as if it were a common occurrence you don't even have to think about that hard, that is also a heck of a move.

JeetJeet 06.02.17	The alien shit WAS a storyline tho. Rye Gerhardt literally got ran over because he was staring at a UFO. They didn't just sprinkle a random UFO without buildup. There were multiple hints and things going on that were otherworldly.

By that I mean not just the aliens, but also tiny details such as the ending of Mike Milligan's plotline or, more obviously, the Undertaker. Remember, how the Undertaker was introduced? He was menacing and had two Thai servants by his side. His preacher-like looks and the fact that his sidekicks were so specifically similar immediately made you think about the story behind that. It seemed like we've just stumbled upon a new badass villain, whose backstory we will be discovering piece by piece later. But a few moments later, he and his companions fell dead on the floor. And with that the creators AGAIN basically told us to simply "accept it" and move on. Was I clear? I feel like I was a bit confusing.

What did the alien thread have to do with anything, ultimately? How did it enhance the story beyond being a random gimmick? The build-up wasn't even fun to watch. It was obvious that UFOs were going to play into it somehow and it was inevitable that it would be random and pointless, and it was.

Using pointless, random, mundane details to ground a story and make it more realistic is fine, in fact its usually good writing. But it can also be used as a justification for terrible writing decisions, like in this case. It completely interrupted the flow and pulled me out of the story, not because its a UFO, but because wtf. If no one wins, what's the point? I guess the point is, some people such as yourself like it apparently.

I think this is a really Coen thing to do. They also tend to dedicate a great amount of effort on things that are ultimately not supposed to either make sense in a typical way, or lead to anything and affect the overall storyline.

I'll remain cautiously optimistic that the last batch of episodes will paint all of this in a more meaningful light.

TalonsOfFire 06.06.17	It would be nice to see a subversion of how this season ends, compared to how these stories have gone in the past. It's always some random event(s), usually comical, ends up killing pretty much all of the main characters except for the well-meaning police. If that's really the only outcome and characters that they can do, then this should be the last season. It's always been fantastic, but this will be the beginning of it being predictable and transparent if they don't change any of that structure.

I didn't hate it or anything, but even though I figured something weird was going to happen it still felt like it almost came out of nowhere. I usually don't think to deep about symbolism most of the time either, so I will probably have to read more into it. Killer violence though and glad about the reprised role though and the violence and production were fantastic.

TalonsOfFire 06.22.17	imo the finale, and the last scene particularly, really showed what this season was about in a clever way, almost too clever to where the narrative sort of took a backseat overall. As interesting as this season could be at times, I'm not sure how much value I got out of what they were ultimately trying to do. I feel like what happened was more about abstract ideas than story, characters, or emotional resonance. I'm not as much of a fan of cold, or whatever you want to call it, kinds of storylines, even when they're in the service of really well done and interesting ideas. All in all though, a really great season (though my least favorite of the three) with great acting and directing. If they can't think of some way to change things up next time, then it should probably be the last.

Gloria naturally believes in objective truth, the law, hard facts like photographs. ending on an ambiguous shot where they're both waiting to proven right and we'll never know if he walked free or not is, imo, pretty genius

The last scene summed up the season as being about Gloria and Varga's clashing views of the world, and the lack of narrative momentum throughout the season, and their efforts, are therefore just the vehicle to show that. Like the ending of the Sopranos (so I'm told, still only on season 2) the ending is ambiguous and left up to the viewer's own optimism, or more random, nihilistic view of the world, if Varga or Gloria was right. It makes for a less satisfying or narratively strong plot, but the season is trying to do something else, being more about ideas. I'm not really sure how to feel about this, but it was an engrossing and interesting ride nonetheless.
JeetJeet 06.22.17	Yeah none of this season panned out how I thought it would. I gotta give Hawley credit. Every season is unpredictable and always a thrill to watch. This was the slowest paced one but good god there was so many amazing character moments and the dialogue was hilarious. It would be a shame if we didn't get a 4th season.

Satellite 06.22.17	it was great. loved the ambiguity of that final scene. and i knew emmit was done for when he volunteered to go into the kitchen alone. never, ever do something like that in the closing minutes of a fargo season.
Satellite 06.22.17	my only complaint (and it's really just a nitpick) is that silencers don't suppress the sound of gunfire to that degree. there's no way the stussy family wouldn't have heard emmit getting his brains blown out from the dining room. momentarily killed my suspension of disbelief.

dbizzles 06.23.17	Cop didn't necessarily win in this one, Prancer. In fact, the new Chief may have lost hard depending on what happened after the credits rolled. Didn't see him in the ranks of DHS at any rate. Also, I feel that the dimming on lights with Varga could also be symbolic of his fading away, or disappearing back into the world. Also, Sat, I like to think that after the gun went off, we switched to Mr. Wrench's perspective and got no sound, therefore no audible reaction from the family; who is to say they'd rush into the kitchen at a man with a gun? Or whether he'd react to them when he is basking in the glory of revenge enacted on behalf of someone who made him filthy rich? Probably a huge load of bollocks, but whatever. Great season overall. I prefer it to the second. There weren't any shitty characters in this one.

Prancer 06.24.17	The more I think about it the less I like the ending. Every other Fargo season had a definitive ending that completed the story, but season 3 just felt cliche. The classic "it's up to you to decide." It is now clear to me throughout the story seeing the differences Varga and Gloria had on truth and justice, so idk why it was necessary to further stretch out that concept like it's never been done before. It seems like whether or not Varga was convicted or free to go, it wouldn't have made for an exciting scene so they decided on the cliffhanger.
Prancer 06.24.17	I would have liked an alternative ending all together. Maybe one where it involves a confrontation between Gloria and Varga, but not one in which he was caught by DHS. Varga is too fun and interesting to get rid of his character for good, but he seems to savvy to have been caught 5 years later without the show giving an explanation for how it happened.

I don't hink either of your scenarios would have been any more exciting than what happened and I don't think the writers of the show are so lazy as to just go, 'Eh, not sure him getting busted or getting away is exciting enough. Let's just leave it up to the audience so we don't have to decide,' and just consider it clever. You said yourself how clear it was that they were playing the perceptions of each character throughout the entire season. I don't think we were left with a cliffhanger, because it's like we will never get a resolution between the two characters, but we were given more of a continuation of the standoff between their ideals throughout the story. I do agree to an extent though. I could've also done with a definitive ending, something altogether different than what they went with. But, I thought the ending was good. They didn't fuck up one thing with it.

The social commentary there at the end was so well done and really kind of terrifying. and also, Ray is a kitten now.

Rik VII 09.19.17	Couldn't really stand Season 2. Too much coolness, not enough substance imo, it just threw too many things together and in the end it didn't really feel as well-rounded as the other ones, even though it was still a very good seasons in itself. Season 3 was a masterpiece though. Has easily the best episodes of the whole series and is the most special of them all ... season 1 was still pretty close to the movie, the 2nd one was the least special one imo due to the many similarities to typical gangster war sagas. Season 3 stands completely on its own and is the most uncompromising of them all. You could say it's the most "artistic", considering the Shakespeare-ish stuff and things like that. I wouldn't say it's the best season though, it's more or less on par with the first one. And yes, it was a slow-burner as far as a season with no more than 10 episodes can be a slow burner. The pay-off is strong and you don't have to wait for it that long, so it shouldn't be a problem for anyone tbh.

TalonsOfFire 09.19.17	2 is the best and one of my favorite TV seasons of any show. 1 had the amazing villain character but had that whole side plot (with the character who finds Steve Buscemi's $ on the road) that felt pointless, but other than that it was pretty much perfect. 3 was good but my least favorite, being more about ideas than story or characters, despite everything being solid all around.
Rik VII 09.19.17	I don't think the third season wasn't about characters. In fact, I think the third season might even have had the best characters overall. Varga is honestly a Gus Fring level villain, hadn't seen something like that guy for a long time. My impression was that the second season was pretty weak regarding the characters - due to things like the policemen having close to zero effect on the actual plot. That said, Peggy was a very good character (but I think I noted that already somewhere up there)

TalonsOfFire 09.19.17	Varga was a good villain but I think Billy Bob and Mike Milligan (mainly for his arc and where he ends up) were even better imo The characters in 3 were fine but not too memorable or really having a big arc. They're mostly there as representations for good and evil, like the female cop main hero and Varga representing different ideals of how the world works, the ultimate point of 3 and why that last scene of the season went the way it did, which in terms of dealing with those ideas was brilliant. I just personally prefer the more plot and character-driven first two seasons.
Rik VII 09.19.17	In case of Gloria I agree, she is basically an allegory for goodness, faith in the good things in the world etc, but as far as characters like the brothers, Nikki and Sy go, I don't think I agree with that. Moreso, I think most of the characters in season 2 were clicheed, especially some of the gangsters. That said, season 2 had its fair share of great characters nonetheless, especially Peggy

I didn't find the characters in 2 to be cliched at all except maybe a bit for some of the less important villains, but that whole crime family and Hanzee Dent were so entertaining and intimidating, like surrounding the police station, that it was completely justified imo. And Mike Milligan was a gun-toting western badass, perhaps a cliche, but in order to have it completely taken away at the end when he gets that promotion and it's genius. Overall I found season 2 to have so much weight and drama to it, more than 1 and 3 despite Billy Bob's presence in 1. I'm also in the minority thinking that the UFO plot was handled perfectly. If you are among those who thought it was ridiculous and cheap, read about UFO sightings in '70s rural America. There were tons of 'em, for one reason or another.
Rik VII 09.19.17	No, the UFO thing was an awesome play on the "true story" claim. I don't know if I liked the Deus Ex Machina context it was used in (another moment in the story where the situation just happens either way without the cop protagonists doing anything, just like basically the whole season), but the idea in itself was great, I'd even say I would have liked a bit more of that stuff. Like I said, I don't know if I like season 1 or 3 more, but I'm very convinced that season 3 is the most creative one, with episode 3 being the biggest oddball of all the series, plus things like Peter and the Wolf tossed in, the bold ending and the dark mood overall. The most ground-breaking season tbh. The first one was a bit more entertaining though imo. Don't know which one I prefer.

TalonsOfFire 09.19.17	I get that, 3 is very different and interesting even tho the formula is standard on the surface in terms of character's motivations. The bowling alley afterlife scene was bizarre in a really effective way, like Twin Peaks, which was augmented by Ray Wise being there. I want to comment on you mentioning the cops not having much impact in season 2's story. For me, the most intense and crazy events happen in season 2 more than 1 or 3 in that the police are clearly way over their heads in dealing with the crazy crime family, the wacky couple Jesse Plemons and Mary Jane from Spider-Man, and Hanzee Dent. The kind-hearted Ted Danson's character reveals at the end that he's creating a universal language for peace that could potentially extend to extraterrestrials if they ever came into more contact with them, which showed how good-natured and well-intentioned he is, and the other good characters as well, in the midst of all the chaos and violence they're just trying their best to contain.
